We slept well at the Comfort Inn in Effingham, had our breakfast and left around 8 am. The kitties did NOT want to go back into the truck, but they had no choice. They settled right in afterwards though so that was good. We are basically taking the same route as we did last year. We enjoyed seeing the Arch, stadium and downtown St. Louis again. We were reminded that we spent New Year's Eve there at the casino. And LOST, of course.....But the sunshine and dry roads are are just what we needed today. Driving INTO the sun all day is not so great but better than snow! It was another long day of driving but we took a lot of breaks! We also didn't quite make it to Tulsa but only made it to ... read more

My trip from Kansas City to Tulsa was pleasant. Quite a few of the fields lining the highway were flooded in the southern part of Missouri, I have been lucky to avoid some of the record rain fall that has been experienced in the American heartland. The TV station in Tulsa said that they are more than 11” ahead of normal rainfall with four months still to go. One of the draws to visit Tulsa was to visit our good friend, Tony. Wally first met Tony when he went to college in Stoke on Trent back in 1964. Tony had moved to South Africa, then in the early 1980s he moved to the U.S. and was employed by Acme Brick, when Wally joined Acme our friendship was renewed. We had visited Tony and his family in ... read more

I went home to Tulsa to see the family. It was a great little time. Saw the brother and the mom and dad and the papa and gramma and even the little dog. One night we drove out to the middle of nowhere to see comets and shooting stars. Another evening we went to see the Tulsa Drillers baseball team be slaughtered in a sweltering baseball defeat that will go down in history. I got to see my old teachers Byron Shen and Gary Sweeney too. Drew and Byron and I went for a game of golf. Oh, and of course, how could I forget the goose that my Dad's friend Fred cooked. It was positively succulent. Cheers.... read more

This all started in 2003 with a casual comment made at my dinner table by mentor and friend, Jim S, "Janet, you should go to the Orff Institute." I hadn't even thought about it before, and certainly didn't consider that I might get to go someday. I glanced at Lisa across the table and her eyes lit up. We've been planning for it every since then. Thanks to Fund for Teachers (http://www.fundforteachers.org) for making it all happen. They have given us an opportunity of a lifetime to go and experience Orff at the Mozarteum, the place where Gunild Keetman herself co-founded the Orff Institute. We're looking forward to rich and rewarding musical experiences in Orff process. We also expect to be challenged, but we hope that we don't have homework! This will give us the opportunities ... read more

The Team is back nested in the familiar with sweet thoughts of the past 3 weeks. As the days unfold and we have had time to process all we experienced, the impact of our trip is taking hold. Son & Mom will never be the same. We will attempt to share the major observations from the trip, leaving the most intimate thoughts just between The Team. * As much as the liberal news media would want the world to believe, the God Bless the USA is truly blessed by God and is a phenomenal place to live. Citizens in the US have the option to live the Simple Life as in the countryside in Romania BUT US citizens also have access within a few miles to the best the world has to offer. The Team ... read more

UntitledChristopher E. and Elizabeth F.It is T-Minus 5 days until we leave for Florence. I am working today and tomorrow and taking the rest of the week off to pack and get ready. I am kind of sad to leave because my internship at the Federal Defender's office has been extremely rewarding and I am learning so much. I am so excited to travel through Europe again, and especially to be back in Italy. Rome is my favorite city and I always get a familiar feeling while I am there. Maybe I lived there in a past life...or maybe it's the delicious gelato. While we are in Rome, we are going to see the Vatican and have lunch with the Ambassador to the Vatican (my former neighbor). I also want to go back to the Colliseum ... read more

The Mother Road North America » United States » Oklahoma » Tulsa By Cruzn4PhotosJune 16th 2007How about taking a little visual trip down memory lane with me. I spent the day getting my kicks on Route 66. I started in Tulsa and drove down to Kellyville stopping at the Hickory House Bar-B-Que in Sapulpa for lunch. I then hopped on the turnpike (I-44) and drove northeast to Vinita. From there I got back on the Mother Road and took it back down to Tulsa stopping along the way. The images will tell the story from today. Enjoy! ... read more

I’m enjoying being a part of history in the making. When a big clap of thunder woke me up early I wasn’t sure the weather was going to be conducive to standing on a corner in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But the rains moved on through and no more came during the unearthing ceremony. Surprisingly I managed to park only a couple blocks away from the site. I wound up with a relatively good view of the crane lifting it out of the ground and onto a trailer. Then I moved down the street and was right next to it as they took it to the convention center for the unveiling tonight. Even though it was still mostly wrapped in the plastic it’s OBVIOUS it didn’t survive the 50 years underground (and part of that time underwater) ... read more

Tonight was a somewhat anti-climatic ending to the day. Overall it was a good program and I’m glad I was able to attend. Part of it may simply be the pace I’ve kept the past few days and exhaustion setting in. The car did not “age” well during its 50 years underground. As I sort of thought all along and especially today after seeing it on the trailer up close, it is severely rusted. Basically nothing that was placed in the vehicle survived. The true time capsule - which was steel and welded shut - did quite well. The contents were in very good shape. I guess the most disappointing part for me was the way they treated the American Flag. A flag that had flown over the Capital was buried in the time capsule. ... read more

Hello from Tulsa. I am officially on "Tulsa Time". That's the title to a great country song done by Don Williams for those of you who don't know. It was a nice drive in today. Only 218 miles after the longer days Tuesday and Wednesday. The guy at the campground office suggested a different route than I had planned which I took. I went on I-40 to Alma, AR - the spinich capital of the world (so said the sign!), then took I-540 north to Fayetteville, AR and US 412 into Tulsa. It was a pretty drive through the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas (no where near as beautiful as my NC Mountains). I rolled in here about 2:20 and it took me over an hour to get completely settled in. In the middle of flat Oklahoma ... read more
