Ok, I promised that in the next update I would reveal the coolest attraction on the Springfield to Oklahoma City run. It actually was quite unexpected. Kind of that feeling when you think you have spent all of your money, then you find a twenty hiding in another pocket. We pulled into Arcadia to see the Round Barn to snap a few photographs, then drove west into the sunset. As soon as we began to accelerate Misti and I noticed something in the distance. I could not tell for sure, but it appeared to be metal slats in the shape of a coke bottle. Then off to the left I noticed steel trusses reaching out towards the bottle. As we neared it, I realized it was a gas station, but with typical Route 66 marketing. It ... read more

I feel that this blog should begin with an explanation of the origins of this trip. I have been fascinated with the United Kingdom and Ireland for as long as I can remember. I think that it has something to do with my heritage, but for whatever reason I have always been so excited to hear about this area, even before I had visited it. I finally visited England and Scotland my Junior year in High School as a trip with my theatre group to perform at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. I quickly fell in love with Europe and decided that there would be a day where I would live there. As soon as I found out that I would have the opportunity to study in the UK during college, I knew that I ... read more

Howe ... the great wild west opens itself before us and no picture would capture this amazing panorama. (On thrusday you'll see who comes for sunday roast) After a good nights sleep and a true american breakfast surrounded by old boys speaking with the real southern slang we hit the road to Oklahoma City. We strolled the National Cowboy&Western Heritage Museum, all you wanted to know about Cowboys you'll find it here. We didn't know that there were over a 100 different types of barbed wire. The native american section is really interesting but the lighting is very poor so you can't really admire the fabulous crafts in their best light ... The museum holds every year the Prix de West for the best painting or sculpture in the prairie style. We've seen some amazing stuff, ... read more

Today was a sweeeet day! We drove from Little Rock to Oklahoma City. Before we left Little Rock, we stopped at the Bill Clinton Presidential Library. We learned about his childhood and campaigning. We saw some really cool things like Hillary Clinton's report card, her shoes from childhood, and Chelsea's ballet shoes from when she was four years old. We watched a movie about how he was raised by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and his widowed mom. His work was inspired by seeing his grandfather, when he (Bill Clinton) was a kid, running a store and trying the best he could to treat everyone that came in equally. We also go to see an exact replica of the Cabinet Room and the Oval Office. In the Cabinet Room, we learned some amazing facts about the Cabinet. Did ... read more

Tomorrow is the big day! And I'm definitely not packed... I'm still trying to figure out this whole blog thing so this is basically a test entry. I'm going to try to update every day while we're actually in England and yes, there will be pictures. Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful trip advice. At this point the itinerary is non-existent. I think this should make for more exciting updates. We're going to decide where to go each day by letting a chimp throw darts at a map. Planning is sooo overrated. The next update will be from the UK... unless we never finish packing.... read more

Thrifty Travel Tip #4: Don't pay to take a toll road. It's bullsh*t to pay for an interstate when you can use a road that follows alongside it for free, minus the trucks and heavy traffic, and, with a prettier view of the countryside. It'll also save you about $10-20, depending where you are. Buenos Dias and Good Morning from New Mexico. We woke up early this morning (me before Dustin at 7:30 AM, him by 9 AM,) and had the pleasure of taking hot showers in Ree's beautiful guest house. Dustin went out to the car to get towels and some fresh clothes; when he came back in I told him I was going out to get a few things. He informed me that the gate was stuck and he had to squeeze through this ... read more

Traveling from Memphis, TN to Oklahoma City, OK. We go from Memphis to Arkansas. I didn't like the first 2 hours of Arkansas, it looked flat and uninteresting. Sort of anywhere, USA. Closer to Little Rock, Arkansas got beautiful. I think I like seeing mountains - it is so different from where we live. All of Oklahoma is beautiful to me. The day is overcast, looks like big thunderstorms may be moving in. It doesn't rain on us, but the sky makes everything look lush and green. We are relaxed, just enjoying the trip.... read more

On our arrival in Oklahoma we patiently waited for any contact regarding our storm chasing tour. That patience turned to agitation as the hours ticked by and we found ourselves pacing the room between making further phone calls and sending more emails. Whilst doing this, the weather channel reported almost non-stop during a busy weekend of twisters, including Parkersburg (Iowa) where seven people would eventually lose their lives. Dejected, confused and perhaps understandably angry, we began to make plans for leaving Oklahoma and attempted to start picking ourselves up after coming to terms with the fact that not only were we not going to be storm chasing, which was supposed to be a major highlight of the trip, but we had also parted with over $4000 and didn’t know if we were going to see it ... read more

Obfuscator writes: After a much more peaceful and restful night at Thunderbird Lake, we left for Oklahoma City, to see the state capitol. It's an interesting one to see, if only because it has changed so much in its relatively short life. The building was only completed sometime in the late 20s or early 30s, but only got its big shiny dome (which was in the original plans) in 2002. They ran out of money in the initial construction, and so it just never happened, I guess. It's also an interesting capitol because until fairly recently its grounds were dotted with oil rigs. Though some might think of them as an eyesore, they gave the building great character and uniqueness. I should have liked to see it that way, and it certainly seemed like some of ... read more
