I’ve heard that the journey is more important than the destination. Is that just for life in general, or for trips we take? Maybe both. For my trip, the voyage was much more memorable than the destination. Violence has a way of doing that to you. And so this entry will be short on touristy stuff, mainly because I didn’t really do that much sightseeing at my destination, or even on the way. So let’s dispense with that first, since most of my anonymous readers probably only clicked on this entry for my experience in Canton, Ohio. Part 1: Tourism, or Sometimes You Get What You Pay For I’ve only been to Canton once before, on a larger road trip a few years back. I did the presidential things: the McKinley tomb and house. I had ... read more

Lancaster, Ohio, about midway between Columbus and Logan, was another locale to explore. Visitor information in Logan had told us about the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio located there. It is both an art museum and a historic house, a great combination! So, Susan and I spent an afternoon here. The Decorative Arts Center of Ohio had two exhibits in progress: "Tell Me a Story Where the Bad Girl Wins: The Life & Art of Barbara Shermund" and “200 Years of Valentines” to coincide with Valentine's Day. The Barbara Shermund drawings and illustrations were in a gallery space while the antique Valentine's cards were displayed in rooms around the house. Barbara Shermund (1899-1978) was a cartoonist for the New Yorker in the 1920s to 1940s. Her cartoons brought flappers and humor form a woman's point of ... read more

In February 2020 we made another trip to Athens, Ohio. This time it was to see the Ohio University production of the play She Kills Monsters and to see the props Julia made for it. We flew this time, taking a United Express flight from Washington Dulles to Columbus, Ohio. There were no hotel rooms available in Athens, so we booked a room at the Holiday Inn Express in Logan, 30 miles north of Athens. We rented a car at the airport and headed for Logan along US Highway 33. US 33 was a pleasant drive, with minimal traffic. This was good, as we would be commuting a lot between Logan and Athens. Logan is the center of the Hocking Hills, an outdoor recreation area for southeastern Ohio with a state park, a national forest, kayaking ... read more

Our daughter began study for her Master of Fine Arts degree program at Ohio University (OU) in fall 2019. In November, we made a trip out to Athens to visit. We drove from Northern Virginia to Athens in a single day on Friday. On this trip, we stayed at the Hampton Inn Athens, We would learn that we were very fortunate to get a reservation there. Athens, despite being a university town, does not have a great number of hotel rooms. They book up quickly with conference and sports game day traffic. Saturday morning we drove around town, visited an antique store and did a bit of exploring on foot on our own. After meeting up with Julia and Frank in the afternoon, we walked the central campus, known as Campus Green, and the main street ... read more

We started planning this trip about a year ago. Mom needed to scratch another item off her bucket list and I have always wanted to go to Norway. It was an easy decision because The Travelling Professor has a tour that includes Denmark, Norway and Iceland. We had joined him and his partner, Linda, for our adventure in France two years ago and decided that we would take the leap and go. Originally, I wasn't sure I'd be able to join for the entire trip but when we found plane tickets for $800, I asked my boss if I could take two weeks, she said yes! My ticket on Delta for just Denmark and Norway would have been $1500 but by flying Icelandair I was able to save $700 AND include Iceland in my travels. The ... read more

JOHNNY'S JOURNEYS: OHIO and INDIANA 2019 August 13, 2019 (Tuesday) It's 4:30 a.m. and time to rise and shine! We leave about 5:30 as Janet drove us to the Mobile Regional Airport. Check-in was easy at the American Airlines desk. As I waited to board, I was able to snap a few photos of a gorgeous sunrise. I'll be on the 7:13 flight to Charlotte, NC. It was a small plane and was maybe half filled with passengers. The man in front of me had two young daughters sitting across from him. One had a unicorn visor; while the other wore a unicorn cap. Cute! Though we touched down at 9:47, there was a traffic jam. It was 32 minutes later before we could disembark. My connector flight would be boarding in 6 minutes. Gotta hurry! ... read more

Hello, everyone, and this is a travel blog on my trip to America (USA). For a very long time, I have been interested in the idea of visiting North America, and so I decided to do just that. The journey there is accompanied by a 40-45-hour plane ride, with a few stops on the way. On this long plane ride, there are many amazing sights to see, and that's before we even reach our destination! Over the course of this journey, you are certain to fly over the vast, blue Atlantic Ocean. In every direction, wild, untamed water, as far as the eye can see. Above you, white, gentle clouds, wispy in appearance, and so close that you feel you could reach out and touch it. Below you, the ocean blue, spanning a large majority of ... read more

Day 3 – East Louisville, KY to Ashland, OH (332 miles) We started our travels later today because there was no breakfast to be had until 7:30 at the hotel when it opened. What hotel breakfast opens so late??? We’re usually on the road by then. Since we were already out of sync, Pam kept forgetting things and having to leave the table: she forgot to get her drink, needed salt & pepper, then realized she had left her eggs sitting on the counter. And, just to add a little fun to the morning, Claire and Susan hid her oatmeal while Pam was up getting the missing eggs. Oh, sisters!!! With no stops planned before Cincinnati area, Claire worked on the blog while Susan and Pam tried to entertain themselves as Pam drove the busy interstate. ... read more

The Lake Express car ferry is a great way to by-pass the Chicago/Indiana corridor and all of its associated traffic. The ferry leaves at the early hour of 6:00 AM out of Milwaukee which allows for a fair amount of riding left in the day. However, the need to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure which allows for time to apply the 4 tie downs to secure the bike, makes for an early start to the day. The 75 mile ride across the lake takes about 2 1/2 hours + an hour of time change by the time you reach Muskegon, MI. Today the seas are nearly flat so the ride should be a smooth one. I have about 380 miles to cover my route to Canton, Ohio. As expected the ferry ride was indeed ... read more
