The Lake Express car ferry is a great way to by-pass the Chicago/Indiana corridor and all of its associated traffic. The ferry leaves at the early hour of 6:00 AM out of Milwaukee which allows for a fair amount of riding left in the day. However, the need to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure which allows for time to apply the 4 tie downs to secure the bike, makes for an early start to the day. The 75 mile ride across the lake takes about 2 1/2 hours + an hour of time change by the time you reach Muskegon, MI. Today the seas are nearly flat so the ride should be a smooth one. I have about 380 miles to cover my route to Canton, Ohio.
As expected the ferry ride was indeed nice and smooth. Caught 30 winks during the crossing. I gassed up before heading west across Michigan toward Lansing and eventually Ann Arbor - (U of Michigan’s home). I gassed up again near Saline and got some lunch outside of Ann Arbor. I arrived in Canton about 4:40 PM. and checked in to my room. After changing out of my riding gear,
The Racine Legion
George Babe Ruetz's - Racine Legion team I went out for a ride about town and ended up at Mulligans Pub.. Notice- I didn't say Irish pub. Usually when I ask the bartender -how’s the Guinness pouring ?- I get a “great” or awesome” but this time I got an “OK” !!! Ok? Who say’s OK? Sounds like that commercial on TV. In the end I guess he was just being honest - the Guinness wasn't even worth rating!
Saturday morning I headed over to the NFL Hall of Fame. When I retired from AIS in April, one of the gifts i received from the team was a parking pass and entry ticket to the hall. The hall consists of two floors - I read everything they had on the 20's and the start of the league and was surprised on how little info they have from the early years. My grandfather- George Babe Ruetz had a team in Racine Wisconsin (Racine Legion) which predated the NFL. The team was part of the American Professional Football Association. Babe was at the meeting for the formation of the NFL but didn't field a team until the second season. My cousin has some of grandpa's letters between Babe
Ring V
The new Jim Ruetz design for Packers Superbowl # 5 victory. and the other owners including; George Hallas of the Chicago Bears & Curly Lambeau of the Green Bay Packers. Most of the letters talked about players salaries and rules. My cousin and I have been planning to bring copies to donate to the Hall for the display area. This visit reinforced the need to give the hall additional information. My favorite part of the visit was the locker room video where Joe Namath addresses you in the locker room and talks about some of the players. In the Superbowl section you are able to design your own Superbowl ring - so the Packers are all set for their 5th Superbowl ring design 😊. (see the pic of my design).
Tomorrow I'll be heading toward Pittsburgh then south to West Virginia before heading East toward Baltimore. It looks like I'll have some rain tomorrow so I'll not make hotel reservations in case I decide to stop earlier. If I make it past Baltimore I'll be doing about 350 miles tomorrow. Talk to you again from Maryland or Delaware.
