I’ve completed my 5th week on my travels. I’m in Canton, OH to visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I really enjoyed my visit. They had a Football card collection, several exhibits on time perioDDS, dominate teams, equipment, records, and of course the Bust of all the enshrined members. The videos throughout the Hall were well done.... read more

Pam (a friend I met on my first Road Scholar trip) and I are heading up to an "independent study" Road Scholar trip in Montreal and Canada. She drove to my house, then we left together on a road trip to explore the 1,000 Islands (NY and Ontario) area, Montreal, Quebec City, and on the way back, hitting Kingston, Ontario and Niagara Falls (both sides). The "independent study" means there are fewer group tours and activities, with afternoons and evenings left on our own to explore. This trip is different from recent trips because I normally travel alone; We left Strongsville about 9 am and drove as far as Watertown, NY. It occurred to me that some of Mom's family is from the area, so it might be fun to come back later for a couple ... read more

Yesterday was fun, today just as much. Our goal was to learn more about this city and surroundings. We spent Tuesday night in Covington, Kentucky. We have learned that on the south-side of Cincinnati are two wonderful towns on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River, Covington and Newport. I'm sure we are among the few that did not know this but we were happy to learn about it. Our dinner last night was in Newport. It has a lot of recent development along the river and seems upscale from other areas. This morning we took advantage of public transportation by walking a couple of blocks to catch the Southbank Shuttle Trolley. It circulates from Covington over to Cincinnati and then back across to Newport. We exited in Newport and walked along the river to the ... read more

Well we reached the end of an extraordinary 17000+ mile journey across this beautiful country of ours. Starting in August we crossed 28 states, visited 10 national parks, countless state parks/national monuments and museums...while camping along rivers, beside streams, within ancient lava flows, on mountain tops, below sea level playas, in deserts, forests, prairies, and along both oceans with sun rise above the Atlantic and set over the Pacific. We saw how the poorest of people live in the Slabs, the richest in Monterey, and the imprisoned in Alcatraz...we saw great human creations an even greater natural ones. After leaving Las Vegas as our final significant stop, we began a 7-day-2,000+ mile trip home along the path of Route 66 where we saw some cools stuff and camped within an ancient lava flow, but for the ... read more

After we left Maine on 20 Oct, we travelled to our condo in Ohio for a visit with Patrick and Troy and to get celebrate Thanksgiving with the boys. While there we took a brief road trip up to Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Cleveland waterfront. We're happy we went, because too often we never go and see sights nearest to where we live...and it's too beautiful to be missed. Next time we pass through in April we'll visit the AF museum in Dayton and the NFL Hall of Fame, but ran out of time on this visit home. It was a wonderful weather day to visit both the park and the waterfront. We also took a side trip to visit one of the Italian restaurants featured on a food channel show. The show made ... read more

Well, we're in Cincinnati, Ohio, on our way back home. We left Maine and traveled south through New Hampshire, then Connecticut, then New York, across Pennsylvania, and into Ohio. Along the way we stayed in Springfield, MA, Lewisburg, PA, then Akron, OH, then Columbus, and then finally Cincinnati. Tomorrow we head to Indianapolis and then on through Illinois to Iowa, where we'll spend a day with family before continuing on home. We really haven't done much of anything spectacular since leaving Maine other than locating really great brew pubs and lots of interesting antique stores. The colors are not as turned this far south as they were in Maine and Nova Scotia. Seen some interesting trains along the way although not as many as I would have like or even expected. In Akron, our hotel was ... read more

Time to leave museum-heavy Washington behind and relax a little on two day journey up to Paul's brother, Phill and family. So, Wednesday we set off from Washington. During the day we crossed over two drainage divides - the Eastern Continental Divide, between the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico directions - and the Great Lakes / Mississippi divide. We also took the car over 8000 miles on the trip meter, not too bad considering we did nearly 5000 in the first 4 weeks. First, though, we headed into rural Pennsylvania to Kentuck Knob. KK is a national historic landmark, a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1953, one of his last. FLW is probably most famous for his Guggenheim Art Gallery in New York - the white spiral one, like a snail stretched tall ... read more

Two weeks. Just two weeks until I head to France with my mother. All arrangements have been made. Tickets, hotels, rental car, a loose intinerary and a general idea of the things we want to see and do. I'm feeling a little more nervous than normal. The language barrier and reputation of the French certainly contribute to the anxiety. Ranger Rita has not failed me though. I have a vision of how the weeks should play out and know there will always be adjustments. Relax, be yourself, be flexible and when all else fails....eat cheese and drink wine! ... read more
