This past week, our little family had the opportunity to travel again to our beloved family cabin at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. Situated near Waynesville, NC and Maggie Valley, NC, Lake Junaluska is a peaceful retreat that has become like a second home to us. I had never heard of the locale until I met and married my husband, but he grew up riding his bike along the paved pathways and taking family walks around the lake with his brother and parents. Since then, we have come up here at least two to three times every year to reflect, spend time together, and disconnect from the technology that can be so overwhelming at times. This past trip was especially sweet, and very memorable! We got up to the cabin around 11:00 p.m. on Friday night. We ... read more

As I’m writing this, I’m sitting in the Asheville airport, and I have a couple hours to wait before my plane takes off. I’m anxious. I’m excited. I’m just a little overwhelmed thinking about what the next 20 days will be like. I have traveled before, and I have been on long flights before, but something about this trip is different. I’ve traveled before as a professional educator, learning about the educational system and culture of some far away place, but something about this trip is different. I can’t quite put into words just yet why I feel this way, but it is my hope that through this travel blog, I will be able to post something meaningful--something that either brings a smile or touches your heart is some way. South Africa is like no other ... read more

A big thank you to my sister for recommending that we take the ride into Fletcher, NC to visit a brewery and have dinner. It was a very enjoyable evening with great food, tasty beer, and an interesting walk through some gardens. We drove from our cabin in South Carolina past Dupont Forest in some crazy rain. The skies opened up and we were both very happy that we were done with our forest adventures for the day. Once we made it into Brevard, the rain stopped and the rest of the drive was very pleasant. I really enjoy being a passenger for these trips because the scenery is so nice with the mountains in the background. I'm not sure what we expected, but when we arrived at the brewery, we were absolutely shocked by the ... read more

It was a very fortunate coincidence that my sister was finishing up her family vacation in the mountains just as Albert and I were starting ours. We met met her and her husband in Hendersonville for breakfast and a stroll through downtown. Rain cut the walk short, but we still had plenty of time to catch up. My favorite part of downtown is the decorated bears that are everywhere, on corners, in businesses, etc. It is certainly a charming way to set their town apart. Here's some pics of the town......... read more

This afternoon, after the rain had subsided, we took a ride over to Dupont State Forest and parked at the Fawn Lake Parking Area. This access point was an excellent place to start for our 5 mile hike to Bridal Veil Falls. The falls are very pretty, and we've seen them several times. We chose this hike today, in part, to scout out some of the trails to see how well I would do biking in this area of the forest. Since this was the first hike of our trip, I felt more serene immediately upon walking into the forest. We enjoyed the trees, the cool air and the smell of the foliage. Most of the route was pretty easy with a few moderate sections. It was later in the afternoon so we came across very ... read more

Got another early start with a destination of Clarks Summit, PA. Another beautiful travel day. Traffic was mainly light and the trip was good. We arrived, again, around 3:00pm and settled in until we decided where to get dinner. We ended up at Walmart for something simple. Another blog entry as the one before. :-) The next entries will be similar only in different locations. :-) Trip info: Only two states today (Maryland & Pennsylvania) 558 miles... read more

Today was a causal wake up for me since I was in the van today with Chris Benson after Amanda asked me to switch. I didn’t mind since I hadn’t driven with him yet. I took my time not rolling up my thermarest and got to cooler crew duties after rolling my bag down to the hall (trailer hitching troubles were going down hard this morning!). After labeling and dividing up much of the food, and finally designating bins & coolers for lunch and to go straight to the host in the trailer, we laid around a bit as we waited for the trailer to be hitched & packed. Eventually we were able to enjoy some of the breakfast casserole (egg & saugsage!), warm cinnamon bread, fruit, & coffee. After getting seconds of the bread, cooler ... read more

Today I was excited to ride bc the Ellies and I had decided yesterday that today we would ride together as a chore group! However, before riding bikes could happen, we were in charge of cooler duty once again and oh man what a feat that was! Raleigh was incredibly kind to us between the food donations from the church, alum, & Noah’s parents so we had to dig out the extra cooler from the trailer (shout out to NJ!) and labeled everything. The additional cooler had some serious black mold so we washed & bleached it as best as we could, added a plastic bag liner, and filled it with the remaining food. Needless to say, Carly was bonking by route meeting—it was hilarious! This is going to be a good day...! After Ryan gave ... read more

This morning I woke to my alarm and it felt odd to wake up not near my K2C friends. We had breakfast—including banana walnut muffins!?—had our route meeting about the AH cause in Raleigh, loaded up the vans, I grabbed the stuff for the fundraiser tonight from the trailer, and hit the road. I helped Safety Nav Ryan as Jess got us pumped up with some awesome jams! It felt good to show up to the build site fired up and ready to work! The day promised to be a hot one so everyone applied their sunscreen as we signed in and heard about Wake County Habitat. It’s one of the largest and has grown even larger in the last 5 years. They build more homes than any of the other H4H we’ve encountered and they ... read more

Fayetteville to Raleigh This morning chore groups switched which means that the Ellies were back on cooler crew & I was assigned Sweep with Beth for our 81 mile day. Though the kitchen was small, we managed to pack up the coolers after everyone enjoyed a pow-wow breakfast in the youth room. We all discussed why we all woke up at 1am thinking it was time to leave and Noah even admitted to deflating his thermarest. Turns out it was bc of Magpie coughing and she ended up removing herself to the bathroom (& maybe slept there?!). Her sinus infection continues and is leaving a lingering cough as she annoyed with not being able to taste food. Hopefully she can get better (& some rest!) soon! After packing up the lunch van and route meeting, where ... read more
