I was excited to get started today knowing I'd be seeing the home of the first controlled flight at Kitty Hawk ( Kill Devil Hills area). I had nice starting weather once again, albeit a little warmer than yesterday but sunny and very little wind. My route took me down Southwest of Virginia Beach then eventually back to the Southeast toward the outer banks (OBX). The OBX are really just a set of sand dune islands. From the picture you can see just how much of the island is dune and nearly all the soil is silica based dirt. It is hard to imagine how the homes on the island are able to weather the hurricanes that pass by here every few years. I noticed most the homes are unpainted probably because a good stiff wind ... read more
This is the track that the wright flyer ran on to get up speed for take off- it also had to be hauled up the hill
In December of 1903 this hill was mostly sand and the wright flyer had to be hauled up for each flight

4-Day Trial Walk – Day 3: After dinner and day 2’s blog, I got an excellent night’s sleep at my buddy Richard’s house. I was up and on my way by 8am. Richard, the kind friend he is, was concerned about me continuing and offered to take me to my next stop, or maybe half way. I graciously declined, since I intended to do the whole 4-day walk to Chimney Rock or at least Lake Lure. The first leg was a bit tough, with a lot of ups, but I finally made it to my first rest stop at the W.E. Willis Grocery around 9:30, where I had a steak biscuit and an iced coffee. I was going to get a cherry danish, but some guy saw me get it and recommended one of their homemade ... read more

After a miserable night’s sleep of waking up every hour or two, and feeling cold often, I was awake and ready to go before 9am. My wife took me back to Landrum, at the intersection of I26 and Hwy 14, about where I would have reached yesterday, if I hadn’t gone in the wrong direction. Today I wasn’t carrying my backpack, just my fanny back with two bottles, so the 20 plus miles to Lake Lure shouldn’t be too bad. I turned onto Red Fox Road, walked a mile or so and realized I should have used the restroom back at the gas station where my wife dropped me off! I knew there wasn’t any gas stations or stores for quite a few miles, but when I spotted a church, and realized it was Sunday, I ... read more

During the American monsoon my speedo gave up it's last breath, the bike as well as it's owner is getting a bit long in the teeth. I can use the sat nav but having no odo and no fuel gauge I have to think and who can be arsed to do that, after having been to lazy to don my heated gear I finally succumbed to mother nature's wrath and put on my heated jacket, I should have put it on when I started but as always the laziness gets you in the end, the sat nav took me to a couple hotels that did not exist, or maybe they went broke , so I ended up at a Holiday inn, I put up a question for some ideas about my dead speedo on the adventure ... read more

My husband grew up camping with his family. It’s where he honed his deep-seeded love for old Volkswagen Vanagons, making ground beef “hobo” meals around a small fire, and anything that has to do with the outdoors. He continued this tradition up until the week he left for college, camping at nearby Grayson Highlands with his mom, dad, and older brother Jason. By that point, he’d already met me. I think he knew this was going to be his last camping adventure for quite a while, and he was correct! You see, I didn’t come from a family of campers. Sure, we lived a quarter-mile off the road, had a home flanked on both sides by cornfields and creeks, and spent all our days outdoors. Yet, when the sun set and the bats came out, my ... read more

So it was time to hit the road again, Rich in Waldwick NJ who most graciously kept my bike hidden away in a retreat for abused bikes, his garden shed, was to be relieved of his burden. Last year as I came to the west coast of the US I had an idea of going up and down the coast and then ship the bike back to jolly olde Sweden as the last leg of the American odyssey. Then I met Grant in some hotel in Bumfuck Nepal and we got talking about riding in Mexico, one of my favourite countries, and we talked about going there together. Grant lives in Dallas and that is close-ish to Mexico and he said that I could park my bike in his garage, so now I'm on my way ... read more

Hello World - I had promised myself that I would blog our adventures in China - and I have, keeping most of my memories to myself as I have literally destroyed my keyboard and iPad. (Thanks TSA) So the whole wide world knows Blake and I moved back to the USA the week of Thanksgiving. Long story short - we ran into Visa issues with employment and such. In an honest attempt of fixing the Visa issues, we got the opportunity to travel to a few Asian Countries: first to Thailand and then to Hong Kong. Now that I have some time, let’s rewind the past six months, shall we? ... read more

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25 Remember when I said things don’t happen quickly around here...well I was wrong this time. We had plans to visit my best friend Pati (since grade school) this weekend. We planned to stop in Whittier, NC to pick up sweet Lola about noon this morning and then head to Cincinnati. Last night after dinner Ken got a call from ‘Bud’ the excavator.
