A lovely sunny day was ideal for going up the Empire State Building, so we did. We were consequently rewarded with wonderful views of the whole of New York City and beyond. The rest of the time was spent taking bus tours of Downtown Manhattan by day and night. The informative and amusing guides increased our knowledge of the city no end. Between the tours we had an excellent oven baked pizza at John’s in the Theater District adjacent to Times Square. The restaurant was situated in a lovely converted former church. We were surprised to see that The History Boys by Alan Bennet was playing as we had seen that in Birmingham just before we left. We also visited the impressive Grand Central Station. ... read more

So I have changed country since the last time I wrote. It was actually a bit sad leaving Canada, I really liked the country! Very beautiful, the people were friendly, and there were still so many things left to see. And I had just got used to the Quebecois accent... Anyway, I can always go back some other time. The flight from Montreal to NYC was fairly uneventful. What is interesting when travelling between Canada and the US is that US immigration and customs take place at the departure airport, so I technically entered the US before my flight took off from Montreal. That meant I had to arrive at the airport quite early to have enough time for both Canadian exit formalities and US immigration and customs (plus usual check-in, boarding etc), but on the ... read more

In fairly dull but dry weather, today was our day on the ferries in New York. We took the Circle Line boat first to Liberty Island for a tour around the Statue and then to Ellis Island to visit the museum in the former immigrant reception centre. This took most of the day but we did have time to walk to the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge to catch a good view of the financial district in Manhattan. After a meal in Chinatown which is also close to the hotel, we took the Staten island ferry both ways to see the impressive New York lights after dark. For an unexpected treat there was a superb firework diplay taking place over the harbour. ... read more

17th Sept and arrived at La Guardia in New York more than a little tired as we had been up for more than 24hrs and caught a bus for our home in ......... HARLEM. Yes we knew we were up to the challenge of the hood and quickly settled into the role of being the only two white people within a 5 mile radius, I´m sure they could hardly tell. Our hostel was on 128th & Malcolm X Blvd and it actually turned out to be quite a cool place even though on arrival the news was plastered with shooting in Harlem that day. I think it may be a fairly regular occurence as there seemed to be a police helicopter overhead all the time. We were only allowed on the rear patio until ten at ... read more

Finally home in NYC and settling in to classes. Student life is hectic, but good. Steph found a great job in the Fine Jewelery buying office at Macy’s. Really can’t complain about anything.

As we approached New York under clear blue skies on our flight from Atlanta we had an unbelievable introduction to the city with perfect views from the aircraft of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park and the rest of Manhattan. Unfortunately no photos as the seat belt sign was already on with my camera in the overhead locker. An exciting journey to our hotel by bus and subway then followed which involved lugging our suitcases up and down many steps. However we had plenty of help from the locals with the luggage and giving us directions. The accommodation is a bit basic but the position seems good. We had arrived early afternoon before check in time so made our pilgrimage to Ground Zero. It really is surprising what a large area was ... read more
