Many of you have asked why the blog has been so quiet and well I have actually been hiding out in the US for a week now surprising people with an early arrival all over new england. sneaky huh? last weekend i got a surprise when i was in bombay and decided to just check my ticket one more time to make sure my plans for traveling were okay. i looked closely and despite having an american airlines ticket home i realized i was flying british airways out of india. well they are on a massive strike with over 2000 flights cancelled and after visiting their office they informed me i could choose to be out on a flight in 2 days before the strike or see what happens...my adventurous self was quickly bound and gagged ... read more

So this is suburban USA...wide roads so that the huge landrovers which have never and will never see off road terrain don't hit each other as they glide gently along with their leather seats full of 3 year olds...houses that look like they've each been individually designed, with attention to every detail...blocks lined with functional furniture shops (and the occasional webkinz store...if you're really curious enough to wonder what webkinz are, you'll google it - man will you be surprised!)...this is my home. At least until 16th Feb! I'm having a wail of a time - wail, however, is the operative word, as these kids do nothing but that! Today was especially trying for some reason, and I'm looking forward to everyone going back to school tomorrow (except for Charlie, the blonde and bouncing 3 year ... read more

Am really bored here awaiting '''''''my flight to Orlando - so I decided to have a go at penning a Frank O'Hara type poem .. new york city skyline: a graphic equalizer boom boom B B boom and you in my heart like music only listening to itself, only loving itself and me still thinking of you, still loving you, even though our conversations are as one-sided as the letter of wind slapping back from the Atlantic, even though changing is as impossible for you as for the glass eater at Coney Island lunching only on lightbulbs, even though giving for you is only good when your light offers itself back in its truth as a tangerine moon to the neon streets. yes, for you, everything enfolds inwards. yet when you smile- the yellow flash of ... read more

It's late in Brooklyn, but I just had to say a few words of farewell about this my favourite city after what has been another spectacular day - a day of fire-eaters, rollercoasters and tangerine-coloured moons. I'm not exaggerrating either. Travelling to Coney Island this afternoon (way out past Avenue Q!), I nearly had a photographer's orgasm. I mean that place is visual gold dust - weaving skeletons of defunct/ temporarily resting rides, lurid clam cafe signs and mile after mile of school buses apparently on vacation. I shot some much film and thoroughly enjoyed every minute, despite the absolute sheet of wind coming off the Atlantic. The light was so splendid and even that I couldn't have had it better. T The small museum there is really amazing too - full of signs about now ... read more

Short one tonight - I'm just about to go out and celebrate in Brooklyn with Diana and John - having curry, a fine British tradition! It's been a slightly emotional day - been edging towards homesickness, even though I got to speak to a few people (they charge for taking calls here!!!Swizz!). I've been thinking about Gran too - miss her ringing me, sending a card with crooked handwriting and a Joycean stream of consciousness... have a happy brithday best wishes all the best ... aah. Still, I've moved forward from last year - in so many ways. MOMA was terrific - really. Everything I'd hoped for since I was an art-addled teen. Rather like the Tate Modern in its scope and style, but I also had the most outrageous lunch. Such a posh mushroom chowder ... read more

Well, today will be brief as I'm off out to celebrate my birthday (something I've always wanted to ahve in NYC!) - and to have breakfast. I'm very tired as I'm waking a lot in the night still - and I got back late as I was out with David Bryne!Well, I was at the Carnegie Hall seeing him perform the Knee Plays, a spoken word piece with a brass band. It was utterly spellbinding. It's one of my favourite pieces of his anyway - full of his usual quirkiness - but he was utterly charismatic and GORGEOUS. I was in love with him when I was a kid, but then fell out of love because I thought he was too weird - even for me (that's going some!). Now I'm just going to pack up ... read more

My wonderful friends in Geneseo took care of step one this past weekend. I went out there with Timmy (yay) on friday and stayed til sunday. I had an amazing time. It was so much fun for me to get to see everyone before I head out. It's like leaving for college all over again...except instead of two hours down the thruway it's a two day plane ride. Close enough right? Aside from the fun it also drove home the point that I'm very lucky to have met so many great people at college that would do all that for me. They even decorated New Zealand style! It was the best going away gift I could have asked for. Thank you guys : )... read more

Due to my immense popularity and the high volume of demands for emails when I'm in New Zealand I'm starting this so everyone back in NY can keep up to date on my little trip. So this is my first very boring entry because I am still in Camden and currently sitting in padre's cold office that I'm working in this week. As you can see I'm being very productive. ... read more

Today I'll keep it brief as I'm tired after walking miles and miles through Manhattan (sometimes in the wrong direction!) and I'm still coming to terms with jetlag. Needless to say, NYC carried on amazing me today. I made my way to Grand Central Station this morning - I feel that the camera is having a holiday right now and I'm just it's companion!! GCS is the most beautiful structure - the ceiling is covered with zodiac figures with tiny dazzling lit stars. After I wound my way through the icy winter light towards Chelsea, meandering into vintage stores (some with Rockerfeller prices!), past the notorious Chelsea Hotel (which seemed surprisingly normal) towards the famous Empire Diner where I had lunch amgst the black and chrone decor. My afternoon was spent in Chinatown - my favourite ... read more
