With my terrifying habit of falling asleep while driving, I left NJ at 7am to beat rush hour traffic and allow time for stops. The weather and traffic both cooperated, with intermittent white outs that disappeared into clear roads as swiftly as they came on. My first stop was in Scranton, PA for a coffee at Adezzo. Although it was hidden down an alley, it was definitely a city favorite and one of the most beautifully decorated cafes I've been in. People had meetings in their favorite upholstered Victorian style chair or sat at the repurposed wood community table working. I only stayed long enough for a bathroom mirror photo and a Honduras drip (only $1.49 in my reusable mug)! I love any place that offers perks for sustainability. Got back on the road with only ... read more

Today was our last full day in Ithaca so we needed to wrap up a few things and get ready to leave. It was a bittersweet feeling. I didn't want to think about leaving but I knew we had to face the facts and get to moving. Ithaca Falls Kirby's lunch break was 2 hours again so we picked him up and we headed out to eat lunch at Ithaca Falls. Ithaca Falls is right on the edge of Cornell's campus. As we drive through campus we saw markers for 40th, 45th and 50th reunion meeting places. Seemed they had a lot going on this weekend at the university. You go down a hill and kind of curve to the right. If you aren't looking you will pass the parking area. It doesn't seem to be ... read more

Our mornings are pretty routine now. Jeff and I decided when we get back home we are getting rid of everything and we are just going to live a minimal lifestyle. Not really but it sure is easier to clean up a house when you don't have paperwork here and there, this to put away and that to put away. Anyway, we are having a great time exploring Ithaca and today we are going to conquer Buttermilk Falls, take Timmy to a dairy farm and check out one more winery before we pick Kirby up from camp. We could totally get used to this type of routine. Buttermilk Falls Buttermilk Falls We were going to figure out this park if it took us all day! We were determined. As I get to know the apartment I notice a few things. In our house there are vents in the ceiling where the air conditioner blows the air out and the hum of the air conditioner turning on and off. There isn't an air conditioner in the apartment and there are not any vents in the ceiling or floor. There are vents that line the baseboard. Apparently those are called baseboard heaters and is the most efficient way to heat a house in the winter. Who knew! Me and technology are not getting along this morning. I have three SD cards for my camera but for some reason two of them are now 'damaged'. That means I had to reformat both of the SD cards which means I lost a lot of the pictures I took ... read more

We woke up a little earlier today because Kirby started the Youth Program at the International Society of Double Basses Conference at Ithaca College today. We thought the television worked itself out but it went back to the 6 minutes on and about 10 minutes off. I know #firstworldproblems but it's just really annoying. Long story short, the owners of the apartment called LG and it turns out there is a faulty part. The owners decided to replace to tv so that we could all move along. Works for us! Yeah!! ISB - Youth Bassist Program We did not bring Kirby's bass. We rented his bass for the week from a company that brought them onsite. We picked the bass up yesterday and put it in the gym where the Young Bassist Program would be meeting ... read more

Today was probably one of the slower days that we have had since last Thursday. We woke up and just piddled through the morning. The next thing we know it is Noon so we figured we should go exploring before the rain settled in. We found out from the waiter at the Mexican place last night that Ithaca has 4 seasons. They are: winter, still winter, almost out of winter and construction season. This week the temperatures are supposed to be lows in the high 40's and highs in the low 70's. I'm not complaining. We packed clothes for this type of weather. Well, all except Timmy. He's the one that wears shorts year round. We woke up about 8am to start our day of packing and driving to Ithaca, New York. We enjoyed the apartment in New York. It was not 5 star accommodations but it was the place we needed for this tip. The location in Times Square was fantastic, the beds were comfortable and the apartment was neat and clean. The drawbacks were how many stairs we had to walk up, the painting of the stairwells, I didn't like the kitchen and the apartment could have used a few touchups to make it look a little more inviting. Super Shuttle Yesterday as we were waiting for the Statue of Liberty boat to return us to Battery Park I made our reservations with the Super Shuttle. It was so easy. I just went online, ordered the type of van ... read more

Geo: 42.4405, -76.4955What a morning. Trouble with maps, can't charge anything, no power. Found some in the bathroom. AND, its finally raining. Meant to stop at Wegman Supermarket for supplies (code for donuts) but with everything going wrong, we neglected that stop as well!Rain doesn't stop us, but the lack of maps tries to stop us. Had to find the Ithaca Falls on our own. Up near Cornell University. We managed to find them but due to a lot of work you can't see all of them. Bit disappointing.Off to Taughannock (pronounced Taganuck Falls). 30minutes later and nothing, not even a trickle. Apparently this one and the Buttermilk Falls feed the lake, and with no rain for nearly 20 weeks they've dried up. We decided to do the walk to the falls anyway, because Ella was ... read more

Sunday we slept in a bit as we had nothing set for the day until our tour started at noon. Weather not as great - cloudy, with some threats of rain. But it never got really rainy so we were good. The tour started at Joe's Restaurant, the oldest continually operating restaurant in town. We had salad and pizza, both quite good. The decor of Joe's was vintage 1920's, with small black and white floor tiles and a beautiful wooden bar. Out tour guide was Laura, also the owner of the tour company. She was funny and very enthusiastic about all of our stops. She told us she'd graduated from Cornell in the 1980's and just loved the area so much that she never left. Our next stop was Purity Ice Cream, also an old local ... read more

First of all, WE LOVE ITHACA. Now, the details: The weather here Saturday was wonderful - cloudless skies, highs in the low 80s, no humidity and a little breeze. Great day to be out and about. To start our day, we headed out for breakfast at a Tim Horton's we had scouted out the night before - we had seen a few during our NY travels and they made Allison nostalgic for our trip to England when we first discovered them. (Basically, if you are not familiar, they are a donut/sandwich/coffee shop.) Then off to downtown Ithaca to meet up with our tour. Actually our first stop was the public library for reasons we don't need to go into. Huge library, beautifully spread out, it was the nicest public library we've ever seen. Ithaca is a ... read more
