Today we got to go to our first National Park, Carlsbad Caverns. We left early in the morning and thankfully the weather was much nicer than the day prior. It took us about an hour to get there, we arrived to a very windy and curvy road, making us very grateful to not have the trailer in tow. We entered the base of the National Park into a mountainous area, much different than what we are use to on the east coast; the mountains here are rocky, sandy hills with a little bit of vegetation. We finally made it to the top where the parking, entrance and gift shop are located. The view from here was beyond words, so we will include a few pictures. We went ahead and purchased the National Park pass for $80 ... read more

Geo: 32.4186, -104.229 We arrived in San Antonio after a quick hours drive. We checked in to our hotel and walked down to the Riverwalk. We walked around the Riverwalk and took a boat tour on the river. This place is really nice. It would be nice to have something like this in Sacramento. On Tuesday morning, we got up and walked down to the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum. The saloon has the largest collection of animal horns in the world. After that, we walked down to the Alamo. We looked around the park and went thru the Alamo. Another item off of the bucket list. We stopped for lunch and headed back to our hotel. We decided to stop and visit the San Fernando Cathedral. It has the remains of the men who ... read more

Today I will be going hundreds of feet underground in the form of Carlsbad Caverns. One of my earliest memories was reading an entry in a fact book about Carlsbad Cavern. It is the deepest natural cavern in the world and was created when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone. Native American artifacts have been found deep in the caverns so human beings have been exploring the caverns for thousands of years. It is an 8 hour drive from Austin to Carlsbad so I left at 5:30AM. I stopped for breakfast at a small Texas town called Sonora which is also the name of the desert I was driving in as well. I must admit I felt out of place in a room full of Texans in their boots and big hats with me in shorts ... read more

Greetings from Carlsbad, NM! We made it here yesterday from El Paso, Texas. It was an easy 160 mile day. We are staying at the Carlsbad RV Park just outside of Carlsbad. It is an OK park. There are lot's of oil worker staying here. Many are from Texas. It has been a little hot here. In the mid 90's but it is supposed to cool down a little on Tuesday, the day we leave. We went to the Cavern today. It was 92 degrees outside and 56 degrees inside. I wore long pants and a sweatshirt and was comfortable. There are a few tours that you can take but due to my physical restrictions we settled on the Big Room Route which takes you down into and out of the cave by elevator. Then you ... read more

Our final day in New Mexico began with a great breakfast at a local cafe frequented by the local oil-field workers, as well as the town's professionals. The menu was exactly what we were looking for - good country cooking and lots of coffee. We had plenty of time as our plans for the day included hitting the local antique stores and a mountain tour of the Lincoln National Forest. There were four primary antique stores in Carlsbad, our favorite was more of a conglomeration of "stuff". We were able to find several treasures that were worth hauling back to Oklahoma. The shop merchants were extremely hospitable and inquisitive of our "virtual" store. Of course, we did not really expound on the "virtual" aspect of The Prairie Schooner. Most shop owners seem to detest those who ... read more

We left Lubbock on Saturday after a quick trip to the Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark where we viewed an amazing archaeological site - the only one in North America that has a complete record of nearly 12,000 years of human history located in one place. Wow, those prehistoric armadillos were so big you could ride them! Arriving in Carlsbad, NM, on Saturday afternoon, we went to bed early so we could awake at 7 am and make the trip to Carlsbad Caverns for a 9 am tour of the Left Hand Tunnel. What an experience! Our tour group included 8 individuals led by our Park Ranger "Anita". The tour was advertised as moderately strenuous- it was that- but at least no crawling on our bellies! We started with Anita giving us a firm talk about ... read more

28th Aug ’12 Roswell to Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico So kind of sorry to leave Roswell, even if there isn’t much more to see – I would go back to the museum again and watch all the films if we had been staying, but onwards to Carlsbad Caverns. It only took about two hours to reach the turn off for the caverns and the scenery on the way wasn’t particularly interesting. The road winds up into the hills which are dotted with small bushes and then you reach the visitor centre. So now we were right in the Chihuahua Desert and it was strange to think there was a whole subterranean world of caves beneath our feet. There were various tours you could do to see different parts of the cave system, Howard wanted to do ... read more

Weather - 67 degrees This morning we headed out for Fort Stockton, TX. Misting rain and very cloudy. Speed limit on I-10 is 75mph, THEN IT WENT TO 80 mph. Saw a Corvette pulled over by a state trooped, guess 80 mph was not fast enough for him :-) Two lane roads here are 75mph. Getting hotter with each mile we go. NO SCENERY - or at least the same scenery on I-10 and US285 to Carlsbad. Scrub brush, oil well, oil storage tanks, and miles. Got stuck behind an oil rig being moved for the last 20 miles or so going about 25mph. Got to the RV park - Carlsbad RV Park - very friendly people and ok for an overnight stay. Jack fried cube steak, potatoes, green beans and aleta cooked the biscuits. After ... read more
