Obfuscator writes: The sheltery thing at Fort Sumner Lake State Park worked nicely, though it didn't really matter at all, since it wasn't raining and the wind died down a lot. We both slept pretty well, and woke up at a decently early hour. We hit the road and headed for our first planned stop, Roswell, NM. Roswell, as you may recall, is home of one of the biggest alien cover-up conspiracy stories of the 20th century. As the story goes, in July of 1947, a flying saucer crashed on a ranch northwest of Roswell. A few people eventually claimed to have witnessed the crash. The rancher went out to investigate the next day, and found wreckage. He brought it back to his home, and a few days later, went to town and showed it to ... read more

Carlsbad Caverns National Park and World Heritage Site Carlsbad Caverns are located in the Chihuahuan Desert of the Guadalupe Mountains. The caves were first entered over 1,000 years ago by American Indians. The brochure states that there are drawings on the cave walls near the natural entrance, but no signs that they entered further into the dark areas. In the 1800’s the settlers discovered the natural entrance, due to the thousands of bats leaving the cave. This is still a spectacle that can be enjoyed from early spring to October. The bat exodus can last from 20 minutes to 2 ½ hours and involves a few hundred thousand bats. We were too early in the year to see the bats, as they have not yet returned from their migration to their southern winter homes in Mexico. ... read more

Hello Everyone, We spent some beautiful days in Big Bend National Park, in the heart of the Chihuahan desert. We learned alot from the rangers there, about the raptors, the invasive species and the Rio Grande. We had to be careful with Jenny the Dog because of the Javelinas, which came around in packs at night. We are now in Carlsbad, New Mexico, where we visited the cavern. Max says: The cavern was amazing. A couple of times some water dripped on my nose. Sadly, we couldn't touch any of the rocks, but got a couple of pebbles. There are lots and lots of Peregrine Falcons here. So now we move on toward Arizona. Tomorrow we will pass briefly back into Texas to avoid heading with the trailer through the snowy mountains around Alamagordo. ... read more

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JENNA ! From Ft. Stockton through Pecos to the New Mexico state line we travelled on Highway 285 through flat desert as far as you can see. The monotony was only broken by the occasional oil well or a few head of cattle or horses. Once we crossed the state line into New Mexico, it started becoming more hilly. The drive up to the visitor center at Carlsbad Caverns National Park is winding and narrow. It's very hilly with cactus growing up the steep sides. The view from the visitor center of the Chihuahuan Desert and the Guadalupe Mountains was awesome. We took the elevator from the visitor center down 750 feet to begin our self-guided tour. We decided to just tour the Big Room as it is the easiest walk. It is about ... read more

After a few hours sleep it was time to get up and get ready for another drive. It was quite a long drive but most of us were asleep the entire drive, I don’t know how Jon does all this driving. We went straight to Carlsbad Caverns National Park and arrived in the middle of the afternoon. None of us were brave enough to take the stairs so we all took the lift down to these amazing caves far underground and walked the mile long trail around the bottom. They were very impressive but at the same time it wasn’t something I had never seen before, I’d been in plenty of caves before, this one was just massive. After we emerged from the caves most of us were starving and went straight for the café to ... read more

In 1898, in the Guadalupe Mountains of Southeastern New Mexico, a cowboy named Jim White saw what he thought was smoke rising in the distance. When he went closer he found that the “smoke” was literally millions of bats coming from a large hole in the ground. White and other locals knew of the hole, but no one had explored it. Concluding from the number of bats he saw that this must be a huge cave, White returned with a lantern and a crude rope ladder and descended into the hole. He spent the next 30 years making thousands of exploratory descents into the cave, and trying to get people to believe his stories of the incredible wonders he had found. Finally, in 1924, an article with pictures appeared in the National Geographic magazine. This ... read more
