The road to Amerivespa begins on Sunday as Molly, Paul, Audrey, Mike, Audra and I begin our epic 1,100 adventure from Lincoln, Nebraska to New Orleans, Louisiana. Last night we gathered with the group making the journey to discuss our final plans, share a meal and practice getting our Vespas loaded on the trailer that will haul all of our scooters back from our epic riding journey. Noah, a friend who owns Great Plains Cycle, a fabulous shop in Lincoln, Nebraska was gracious enough to loan us ol' Red, his trusty three bike trailer. Our plan was to load two Vespas forward facing and one rear facing. We found out last night that Vespas are a bit wider than three Ducatis - doh! Snag number one. However, consultations between Paul and Noah began and they have ... read more

So this is the beginning of my blogging experience. My intention for starting this blog was to document my travels/adventures for my upcoming season in Antarctica. In order to give a full spectrum of the experience and to learn more about blogging, I have decided to start with a quick illustration of preparations and training leading up to deployment in October. Currently I am sitting in Lincoln NE. enjoying all the culture this fine place has to offer, and surprisingly, even to myself I am not being sarcastic. The town is actually quite nice maybe a little isolated form all things that I have grown accustom to growing up in california but the downtown area is quaint, and the surrounding landscape is not flat, however it is covered with corn and soybeans. This weekend I ... read more

I am soon to be back on the road again... or should I say "in the air" again? After my fabulous Italian adventure, I couldn't shake the travel bug. Fortunately for me, I was selected to participate in UNL's Global Gateway Program as a faculty associate. What this means is that I get to tag along on the Pan Pacific Study Abroad tour and get the insider's view of planning study abroad trips from two faculty veterans: Ron Hampton and Terry Sebora. And what I've learned so far is that there is so much more planning than meets the eye! Speaking of planning, I have less than two months to finish all of my personal travel planning. I have a new camera to buy, clothes to plan/pack, and side trips to investigate. Oh, and I have ... read more

In only 10 days I am going to be heading off to the Lincoln airport to catch a flight to Venice, Italy! Right now I'm feeling a mix of disbelief (I can't believe I'm really going!), excitement (I can't wait for my adventure to begin), and sheer panic (because of everything I have to accomplish before I can get on that plane)! So for the next 10 days I will be grading papers for my current students, prepping my class for my CIMBA students, getting the ball rolling on my research plans, purchasing all the gizmos and gadgets I'll need for the summer, and talking at length to my dad about how he plans to protect himself from pick-pockets in Rome, as he will be joining me for about 10 days while I'm over there. Once ... read more

We decided to have another down day in this beautiful park. We slept in and took a 3 1/2 mile walk on path around the park. It has many facilities, from horsebackriding to ice-skating to miniature golf. On our walk, Daisy and I admired the horses. Later, Rich and I went to the Strategic Air command Museum and admired the planes and gaped at the missiles. On our way to eat dinner at the lodge, we spotted a flock of wild turkeys. I forgot to mention that yesterday, as we passed Kearney (CAR-nee_, Nebraska), we waved for everyone in the Guthe Clan. Our relatives would be amazed at how tall corn can grow! We went to sleep to the creaks of crickets and the sighs of cicadas.... read more

Hello all. We are alive and well and in Lincoln, Nebraska tonight; for being on the road for over 2 weeks now, we are doing great! The kids have become real road warriors and our time on the road has been profitable even if they are not in school. For example: 1. We visited the New Mexico Natural History Museum in Albuquerque for a day and the kids learned alot about dinosaurs and much of the Southwest's natural history. (they had some really great exhibits, and this was part of Sam's 6th birthday present) 2. They are learning a great deal about the different states in our huge country and all of the culture that goes with each state. 3. They learned alot about caring for horses while in Colorado. 4. We have passed many (working) ... read more

Day 3.. It began with waking up in Evanston, WY. I woke up around 7:30 so I can get on the road earlier and make it to either Lincoln or Omaha, Nebraska to stay the night. I have made it to Lincoln, but not without getting lost or running over a dead animal. I started on the road about 9am. Not an exciting day like yesterday. I was basically driving a whole lot, hours and hours of driving and taking pictures. Bobette and Shelly got to walk around in Wyoming this morning. They walked on the grass and on the rocks. Of course they took off in opposite directions. I took a lot of pictures and I will load them tonight and put the descriptions up later since it is already 12:30am and I have to ... read more

Week 2-3: Boat trip: Last Sunday, September 14, we took a boat/ship ride out to Les Iles du Frioul (islands not far from Marseille). Although a bit windy, it was otherwise a beautiful day. One of the islands is the Ile d’If, which is the location of the prison in Alexandre Dumas’ book The Count of Monte Cristo. We landed on and hiked the big island, Ile de Ratonneau, which is the island that contains Hospital Caroline, built in 1828 to take care of those with the yellow fever plague that killed half of the people in Marseille. The Mediterranean water was a palate of the most beautiful colors of blue. There were a half dozen or so small outdoor restaurant/cafes on the island where you can get a little something to eat /drink after a ... read more

A lot of times I feel like the Lord blesses me more than I really deserve. Family, friends, and safety are some examples just to name a few. I guess the longer I am on this trip, the more I am able to see life in a new way and from a different perspective than I have had in the past. Being out of school is such a freeing experience for me, and I feel like I am finally able to find myself again. At times I feel like I should settle down with a job and whatever else, but other times I think that I need to get all of these desires out of me before I do anything else. My desires include traveling, finding myself, more traveling, being financially stable, paying off loans, and ... read more
