Today was pretty easy and tonight we are staying at a nice Residence Inn on the south side of Lincoln, NE. Although I had a Trip Tik by AAA printed before the trip, our Garmin suggested a different route today that was 50 miles shorter than the AAA route. We decided to go for it, and it worked out well. We spent a lot of the day on US 36 which did not have a lot of traffic, but was still 65 mph most of the way. This made it for a pleasant day of driving.... read more

"An inauspicious beginning!" That's what football's Dan Dierdorf yells Martin Grammatica booted the opening kick-off out of bounds. Today I ate a Piezano's personal pizza and afterwards spent more time in the bathroom than was absolutely necessary. The thing is, I was on the clock -- I had to get to the Omaha airport so I could catch a plane to Fargo. There my dad (of the Tour de Dad) would be waiting. I would have deplaned at 12:40 AM, September 17, but I didn't because I missed my flight. So, "An inauspicious beginning!" I will try again tomorrow. I know that Montana is full of deadly predators: cougars, grizzly bears, and tractor trailers. I have faith that the Tour De Dad will be an epic journey and that the two lycra-girt protagonists will overcome all ... read more

Everywhere I go, it seems I know someone who lives there or has lived there. It's one of the perks of having a large family. Oliver and Jo slept the whole way to Omaha, so, as we headed west from there, we knew we wouldn't be able to drive long before needing to stop again. We decided we'd push the kids as far as Lincoln, and then we'd make a long stop so that they'd be ready to nap when we left Lincoln. My cousin, David, and his wife recommended a couple places for us to stop. We decided to check out the Sunken Gardens, and after running around and getting some fresh air, we'd stop at an ice cream parlor called Ivanna Cone before hopping back onto I-80. Unfortunately, the whole city of Lincoln appeared ... read more

Corn Nation Imagine an entire state having one common love. Contrary to the title, “Corn Nation,” I am not talking about the love of corn. I am talking about the love of the Cornhuskers. The Cornhuskers are the University of Nebraska at Lincoln (UNL) football team. We used to be called the Bug-eaters, we answer to Huskers, or Big Red. The Huskers play at Memorial Stadium; also known as Home of the Greatest Fans of College Football according to Fox Sports Network. Memorial Stadium has been the home of Nebraska football since 1923 and holds the NCAA record for most sell-out games. EVER. Etter ... read more

I woke up today in Lincoln Nebraska. The capitol of the state and home of the University of Nebraska, it was not high on my initial itinerary. I stopped here because I needed a place to sleep. Now that I am here, I might as well find things to see. The first item every guide book mentions is the Nebraska state house. One look at the building and the reason is obvious. The building is a combination of Classical and Art Deco design elements. It consists of a narrow central shaft flanked by two wings. The central section has a small dome on top. The remarkable similarity between this building and a particular part of human anatomy has been noted since the building was completed, and R rated jokes based on that similarity have been around ... read more

Well, after months of pondering my summer To Do List, I decided to throw all caution to the wind and book a flight to Bangkok! I'll be traveling with a UNL student who will be interning for Sapahn (a micro-enterprise organization that connects Thai artisans to western consumers). And I'm going to throw in a good mix of scouting out sites for possible research collaboration and study abroad experiences, too! This time I am hoping that things will be much calmer on the political front and that I can get in some good blogging time. Besides, this time I'm staying for a whole month! So I promise I'll be a better blogger this time! My flight leaves in the wee hours of the morning on July 7. Stay tuned for my adventures... ... read more
