Our last full day here and the full team was out on the mounatin bike ride today so we hired an additional bike made some lunch and set off. Another beautiful sunny day in Bozeman. This was a one way ride so required 2 cars. Off we headed with boys in one truck and girls in the other. The start of the ride was a winding gravel road so there was a quick decision to be made between laziness and the up hill grind. We had a decent ride ahead of us so we decided on a section of road just long enought to get the blood flowing before we headed off road. Before starting off there was one important task that must never be forgotten and that is bathing in insecticide to keep the mozzies ... read more

To wake up in the middle of the wilderness by a lake with not a soul around is pretty surreal. We tucked into a hardie breakfast of cranberry and oats. Our morning bath can only be described as refreshing to the extreme as we jumped into the lake of snow melted water. Our plan was to hike out and head back to Bozeman today but none of us could leave the area without one last look around. So we packed up our campsite and hid our packs under a tree before heading further up the valley. It was hard to know when to stop and we probably walked a little further than intended but the lure of whats over the horizon was ever enticing. Its hard to believe that within a few months this place will ... read more

Matt may have lost the battle with the keg and despite Leannes predictions, he somehow managed to make it up for breakfast and throw together what was needed for the next trip away. We were off on an overnight camping trip to the Beartooths but as Leanne had only ever car camped we decided to be more adventurous and hike into a secluded lake for the night. After the wedding reception today may not have been the best choice for a day of hard yakka. So with our packs stocked with only the necessities we loaded them into the truck and set of on our 2.5hr drive to the Beartooths. Our first and only stop along the way was at a small town called Red Lodge where a much needed coffee was on the cards. Red ... read more

Hey all you wonderful patrons... I just wanted to ask you all a couple favors... Some of you have been added by me or Stef because we felt you needed some assistance in the initiative department...so...sorry, I guess. Or not. We just wanted to ask that if you are reading the blog on the regular, we would greatly appreciate it if you subscribed, just so we know that you're out there keeping tabs. Also, please feel free to pass this on to anyone else who might enjoy it, hate it, marvel at it or be repulsed by it. There's no such thing as bad publicity. Again, thanks for being part of this-- whether you realize it or not you are each with us in some way as we wander the countryside, prattling away... SR/SS... read more

If we thought it was time for a lazy day we were happily mistaken. We got up a little late to find the usual ritual of Sarah and Joe sitting out in the back garden drinking iced coffee, reading the paper or doing university work. Joe had been keen to get us on another one of his favourite local loops, so suggested we load up the truck and head out on a ride through and around Bridger Bowl, the local ski field. Our night was also planned as Sarah and Joes good friends Mark and Amy were recently married and having their delayed reception to which we had somehow scooped an invite. We arrived at Bridger Bowl and unloaded the bikes for our grinding ride beneath the chair lifts up the ski field. Always strange to ... read more

What's hot: Interstate 90. What's not: The return drive. Travel lesson of the day: There’s more to see! from Kathy: As we drove away from the boat at 10 a.m., Paul said, “Goodbye, Pacific Ocean.” It brought a touch of mortality to this trip, for most of which I’ve been in a state of never-endingness. With this goodbye, I realize we are now turning back towards home. Now we are on Rt. 90 W in Seattle, WA, which will take us halfway across the country. We already have about 5,150 miles on the trip odometer and that doesn’t count the 1100 miles each way to Alaska and the Yukon. We have been in our little bubble-for-four, aka the Floonian Roadster, off and on since July 6. Who are we? A reluctant 18-year-old, a 15-year-old in hot ... read more

The next 2 days we spent in Bozeman the town where you cant get bored. Leanne woke up with a plan to update her CV and maybe think about the prospect of having to work one of these days. But this didnt last long and before we knew it we were out running around Bozeman. Although we have been here a while we hadnt really explored the town. Bozeman has increased in size by 40% in the 7 years since Sarah and Joe moved here. It is interesting to see the old historical part of Bozeman with the lovely old houses and the new subdivisions including enormance mansions being built on the edge of town. Running through the University and around the roads we stummbled across Bozemans city trail network. These trails weave around houses and ... read more

Wow, I can hardly believe another month has gone by! I spent the 4th of July with some friends, playing music and watching fire works. It was a really wonderful break after returning from our first survey in Idaho. Since then, I have conducted two more week-long surveys. Our second survey was in and around the southwest area because my work partner Tim injured his spine and had to be within a 45 minute-or-less drive from the local hospital. We were fairly unsuccessful with finding bats during that week. We ended up spending night after night bored out of our minds because the silly bats wouldn't fly. It turns out that the temperature on two of those nights went all the way down to 0 degrees. Although bats can fly and be active in the cold, ... read more

With needing to be back by 8.30am to return the kayaks for the next rental booking, we were up bright and early and back along the slow bumpy dusty road. With kayaks safely unloaded we all felt we deserved a hot coffee and cooked breakfast. Just what we needed after a few super days of high activity. It was a long drive back to Bozeman so with that in mind we kept pushing on. Just like the drive up, it was beautiful and the best way to see Montana. There were a many small rivers and lakes on the drive but the biggest by far is Flathead Lake. Massive in size and by the look of some of the real estate with impressive houses and boat ramps, its beauty was not lost on many people. With ... read more

As the women lay in bed, the men got up and went to work. It was now Leannes US birthday and she was seeing how far she could stretch this. Today we were heading back into the park to the very remote shores of Bowman Lake to camp and kayak. So Joe and Matt carefully loaded the 4 sea kayaks onto the roof of the truck and with 4 strong coffees in hand we headed along the long and very bumpy, dusty road to Bowman Lake. We made several stops along the way to check that neither the truck roof or the kayaks had decided to leave us. An extra stop was added in at Polebridge, a town of 2 buildings, a pub and a general store with the most amazing bakery. To keep tradition alive ... read more
