Day 41 - Tim Hits The Jackpot ! Good Morning !! Well, it looks like I survived the 21st floor last night and I'm just praying that they will keep their word today and move us down a little closer to the Earth sometime before night fall. We finally made it to the room around midnight last night and we both just crashed !! That was a very long Birthday drive yesterday, but we were here now and we were definitely going to make the best of it. We got up this morning, well, actually it was afternoon, we showered and headed downstairs to check out everything. Just as we suspected, it was exactly the same as all the times before, except this time we hoped that all the money would be going into our pockets ... read more

So the time has come for another chapter in my life to end and a new one to begin. Today is the day that we leave Bethel, the day that we leave Biloxi and move on…It’s hard to believe that we have been here for 2 months already and our first project is done. Where has the time gone? It has been a great experience all around and I will leave with many happy memories, life skills and new friends. This has been a great learning and growing experience for me as an individual and for me as part of a team. I have learned many construction skills, something that I previously hadn’t had much experience with. I have learned how to spend every waking hour with 12 other people, eating, working, and living together in ... read more

So it’s been an exciting couple of days... Well, I made it back to Biloxi after spending some time at home for the holidays. It was great to come back to a place that we were familiar with and to see my team after our time apart. Since we’ve been back I’ve been doing numerous tasks at work the past couple weeks. I have tyveked a house, fire blocked, installed doors, windows and a floor and made window frames. Construction is very hard work and I admire people who do this for a living. I don’t know if I could last more than 8 weeks. Heck, if I wasn’t a volunteer, I probably would have been fired a while ago. Its not that I don’t try, I try very hard; I just don’t have the perfection/patience/skill ... read more

"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." - Philippians 1:6 I am so happy. I love my job I love my temporary home I love my friends I love the food I love my life ...and it's all due to your prayers and support. God is everywhere in Biloxi and I feel all of your prayers on a daily basis and it is very comforting and powerful. Time is sparse around here hopefully I will be able to give you an update on what I am doing, and where, and how it is very soon. I just wanted to thank you all for your prayers and encourage you to keep praying because they are working and it is ... read more

Well since I showed you the pictures of Biloxi in one of her worst moments, I though it only fair that I show her thriving also! These pictures are from my trip back to Biloxi in August 2007. I was only there for 2 weeks this time, but that was enough time to enjoy the city. The change was astonishing! Some things were still being repaired, but this time there was at least something to do! The first time I went everything was closed except the mall...the only thing to do was to volunteer in the clean up efforts. This time though a lot of the casino's were opened back up, the beaches were open, the piers were rebuilt, the bridges rebuilt, the grass and trees were regrown, and it was beautiful again! The Hard Rock ... read more

In August of 2006, I changed career fields and had to go to Biloxi Mississippi for my Tech School. We were stationed in Utah at the time. It was a 4 week school, so I decided to drive. I crossed 7 states each way, and a lot of them were new to me, so I was pretty excited. It had only been a year since Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. I don't know what I was expecting...I guess I figured that after a year, most of the clean up would be done. I was dead wrong! It looked like Katrina had just happened the week before. If the destruction was still that bad a year later, I can't imagine what it was like the day after. New Orleans got a lot of attention and damage because ... read more

It seems like forever has passed since Biloxi, but it’s only been a week or so. It was such an incredible experience. Our last day there was perhaps the most interesting, though I got less of a feel for the whole situation. We got up at the usual bright and early time and were going by 8AM. My group helped tear out the insides of a house. The house was rented, but the homeowner said he/she didn’t need us to keep anything. We kept what we could salvage, anyway. We were just a few blocks from the Salvation Army camp. On the way (we walked), we passed a Carolina Compassion group, a relief site with people just rummaging through boxes of clothes and goods, a similar site in front of the Dollar Stare, people cheering us ... read more

6:20PM Second day of Hurricane Katrina relief/cleanup. I was hammering all day. We were taking plaster off walls of a few rooms in the stadium that the Salvation Army wants to turn into some form of bedrooms. We used sledgehammers and pickaxes and hammers all day. We also took a walk midday. Talked to some people. Went down a road by the stadium. (Today, I realized the stadium lights at the end of the field have been blown to an angle.) These are the things I saw spraypainted on houses/signs on houses: "Katrina Sucks," "Surviving Katrina: Priceless," Tresspassers will be shot," "Looters will be shot," "No flooding," Insurance company names "State Farm," "Nationwide," others, addresses, phone numbers, family names, and the strange markings of the national guard, numbers of dead, animals found, etc. Things on the ... read more
