Typical of my most recent adventures, I got another late start to this day. I went to the Parkview for breakfast around 10:45 AM. By the time I unloaded my sleds it was damn near 1:00 PM. It was typical early season riding. At this time, the wet areas full of creeks haven't frozen yet so I got to do some wet stream crossings. The snow was very good and only a couple sleds are around so its not getting beaten up. I rode down Trail 13 toward Greenland for 20 miles before running into some very wet spots so I decided to turn around and head back north. The snow get quite a bit thinner 25 miles south of Twin Lakes. Theres supposed to be more snow north of here up to Copper Harbor, so ... read more

Well, my 10:00 AM departure estimate was off by 2 hours. I got going about noon. I'm getting ever lazier in the morning. 460 miles later, I'm in Twin Lakes. There's about 14" of snow on the ground and they're calling for more every day. They also have a winter storm forecast for Tuesday/Wednesday, expecting at least a foot of snow in that. I listened to almost all of Charles Kuralt's book after listening to the Bears game-WOO-HOO; Bears actually win a game! Listening to Charles Kuralt, I was once again reminded how travel is so much about the people you meet. I made up my mind that I'm going to take even more time to talk to more people on this trip. I've ridden the snow machines an awful lot of miles over the years ... read more

Well! Hello to all and welcome to my travel blog! (I have been promising getting this started for weeks now, and I think its finally the time to let people know what I have been doing. My overseas trip is starting, it turns out, here in the states near the great lakes, WOOFing for my extended family. Its been a great experience and I’m sure I can WOOF any were in the world. Right now I am still in the final phases of my departure, preparing to get travel, and medical insurance, finding a Host in Japan to let me WOOF, and buying the plane ticket. Getting a Japanese Host is currently the biggest problem I’m facing. Yay! For my first entry!... read more

Here's some of the pictures from our hike where we saw: Chapel Falls, Chapel Rock, Mosquito River, and some guy hanging out in the river wearing his jeans with a mile walk back to his car wearing said jeans. He did say it was worth it though, so hopefully he still felt that way by the time he got back to his car. We skipped Mosquito Falls. We were spent and took in about all we could handle of the "wow factor" for one day. A lot of these pictures you can't tell that there's a 150 - 200 foot drop from our trail to the water. While there is only one picture of the trail with the steep drop directly next to it, a lot of the hike was like that. The view was amazing, ... read more

SUNDAY (pictures of hike on next post) We grabbed breakfast at a restaurant called The Dog Patch before heading out for a day of hiking. I packed all sorts of food to eat at the campground, but the Piranha Flys had a tendency to kill the mood. Our first stop was Munising Falls. It was a little over a 1/2 mile to the falls and back - no biggie. The view was nice, but a tad boring on the adventure side. There were bathrooms and wooden walk ways there and back. Our next stop gave us two options. Chapel Rock to the right or Mosquito Falls to the left. Ooooor a third option of doing the whole loop totaling ten miles. We decided to head toward Chapel Rock and just play it by ear. Nobody thought ... read more

FRIDAY The boyfriend and I decided to go camping for a week of my two week break from school and to take my former co-worker, John, with us. Johnny is known to complain about not getting time off of work and that everyone gets to take vacations except for him because Lord knows Anderson Printing would implode without him. So. We left him no choice but to take a vacation with us. After debating where to go and what to do, the three of us finally, finally, finally settled on camping in dah U.P., eh! We picked up John about two hours late, but aside from that small glitch, it all worked out really well. We drove up to Munising with plenty of time to set up camp and make dinner. The camp ground we stayed ... read more

Today was nice. I didn’t have to wake up until the temperature was in the positives, and even then, it was warm enough for me to walk around in my bright orange flip flops and trousers and black slick jacket. Got up to at least 29! Not a cloud in the sky either. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working on a project for Sarah. I took all of our favorite songs from our favorite musicals and put them onto one single sing-a-long disc! Yesterday, I finally got it to work properly and burn and everything, so I asked Kyle to call her and have her come down to his room so I could put it in hers. She didn’t find it until this morning and was having trouble figuring out how I got it ... read more

I finished book number eight last night and started number nine. I didn’t really want to start a new book last night, I just was having trouble falling asleep, not sure why. Though our heater makes a distinct noise- it’s the same one that the bus makes, so this morning I thought maybe Jordan left the bus running outside our room. Alas, I didn’t get as much sleep as I was hoping last night. But to make up for it, I set my alarm for p.m. instead of a.m. Oops. Great way to start off the day. I went down to a quiet breakfast, but soon the children, all bundled up, ascended on us. They has been in the bus, but it was having trouble moving or something, so they came back in with all sorts ... read more

So, I know this blog is supposed to be all about my trip to Mexico, but I found out earlier this week that my professor for the course I took on Contemporary Latin American Culture, Dr. Susan Goodrich passed away. Dr. Goodrich helped encourage my passion for Latin America, and my passion for Latin America is why I chose Mexico as my study abroad destination. In a sense, Dr. Goodrich helped guide me in the direction of further studies of Latin American studies and I feel as if I owe her a few words of respect. I wrote this on the ASNMU blog page @ http://asnmu.nmu.edu/blog/?p=44, where you can leave messages for the Goodrich family. Also, memorials may be made in her name to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, P.O. Box 17279, Baltimore, MD 21203-7279 or online ... read more

Brrrrrrrrr. It's so cold here in the UP. Can't hardly wait for Mexican weather! So this entry is about preparing to study abroad. It is a lot of work, believe it or not. I find myself filling out an endless amount of forms, applying to a plethora of fun things, waiting anxiously to see if I got enough aid/into the program/the visa, finding cheap airline tickets (I used travelocity by the way...good deals), prepping to move out of my apartment, getting my immunizations, attending orientations and fairs, picking the country that I want to study in. But all of this probably isn't the hardest part. With all this stuff, people can help you out. Susan Morgan, the study abroad coordinator and others in the IAO at NMU are very helpful, Jetlag, a student organization on campus ... read more
