I am finally back home in Maine. The return has been somewhat anticlimactic, since the weather here has not been very nice for spring skiing-especially after being out west.During my last week in Ketchum,my world class skier friend Crystal came out.She seemed to thoroughly enjoy Sun Valley, even though it does not have the extreme skiing available in places like Jackson Hole. But then JH doesn't have the other attributes of SV,like an opera recital we went to-a wonderful soprano and tenor singing in front of a huge fireplace in the new touring center lodge for about 100 people! It was unlike any venue I have ever experienced. WE left SV on the 5th of March and drove to Bend ,Oregon to visit my brother Jim and his wife Tina.About 100 miles out of Ketchum,on a very deserted road-the RV ... read more

Lily Says: "We had our last day of school today. It is sad because I am leaving, and I am getting use to life's changes. At school, my friends gave me little gifts and said 'Good bye. I will miss you.' I am looking forward to having a good time on our trip." Austin Says: "Today is my last day of school. I am going to miss all of my friends and teachers that I've had over the years in Ellsworth. It has been nice knowing so many people for so long. At school, my friends gave me cards and a cake. It will be hard leaving my friends here, but I know I am going to make a bunch of new friends in the future. On Saturday, we are going to finish packing up our ... read more

Enter the Pumpkin Chucker Here was a learning opportunity if there ever was one. At Poland Regional High School we had a half day and decided to combine many different learning areas (Math, Physics, History) in one fun filled event of Pumpkin' Chunkin' glory. Jonathan Doughty, a very energetic and awesome science teacher at PRHS has a good friend who constructed a large trebuchet and was willing to transport it out to the school! Through out the whole day we had students measuring projectile distances, time from launch to landing, and the masses of pumpkins and watermelons. There were exercises in mathematical modeling ballistics to find the initial velocity of the projectiles and their highest point. All and all it was a bombastic ballistic bonanza and it was made possible by teachers... read more

So last week was our second week in our Canada/New England run. We spent Monday in Halifax - fighting fires. Day 2 we ported in Bar Harbour, where a bunch of us got off and went for lunch. Lisa’s boyfriend Josh (firefighter on the ship) wanted lobster, and we all laughed when our waitress insisted on schooling Josh in proper-lobster eating. I ordered lobster tail. So fresh and delicious! Day 3 we ported in St. John, New Brunswick and our only purpose was to get Humberto a birthday present. After running into Humberto that morning at boat drill, he decided that he would come shopping with us. So, we lied and said the hoodie Canada sweater was for my Dad for his birthday (which is in fact approaching! Happy Birthday Dad!) and even had Humberto try ... read more

In the very North-East corner of the United States is Bar Harbor, Maine. Bar Harbor is a quaint and picturesque town on Mount Desert Island in the Acadia National Park. Precipice Trail head, while short in distance at 1.3 kms it rises about 350 metres along the eastern face of Mount Champlain with many rungs and ladders along the way. it is definitely not for those scared of heights. Many sections of the trail are very narrow and a slip would be the end of you. This also provided a great challenge and some magnificent views of Frenchman Bay.... read more

Last evening, (how could I forget?) we drove into Biddeford to look for the car shop and saw the huge textile mill buildings. There is a church on every other corner! When we were traveling through Nebraska, the history of each town mentioned all the saloons they once had on every corner. Quite different here! Now we know why the young and the restless went West in the first place! There were beautiful old houses that were built by shipbuilders and mill owners. On our way back, we passed a hair salon called, "Curl Up And Dye". :) As we drove through Kennebunk, Nancy had to call her sister, Carol, because her husband's family comes from Maine and they have a house in Kennebunk. Carol gave us the number of Art's cousin. We called and asked ... read more

As fall is fast approaching I wanted to take some snap shots to send out to the folks "from away" as we say here in Maine (also known as the 207 according to a fairly popular radio station in the state). I haven't had a New England fall in a long time and do to the large quantities of water received this sumer, the foliage was rather super duper. So over this last weekend I took a nice drive through New Gloucester and up into Readfield and took some snap shots of the spring foliage and of Sabbath Day Lake and Maranacook Lake. On a side note, I took a 35 foot jump off a large train trestle into the VERY cold water of Maranacook Lake (refreshing after the fact, frigid at first). I also got ... read more

We woke up to the sound of rain on the roof! It was a light rain, but in the camper it almost sounds like hail! Rich took the truck into town for a lube and oil change. While he was there, he heard people talking about the 22 ton slab of granite that slid down onto Interstate 89 yesterday near Sharon. That's where we were yesterday, eating our lunch at the rest area! It must have happened shortly after we went by! No one was hurt. Nancy paid bills on line and caught up on paperwork while he was gone. When we left Vermont, it was foggy and drizzly. We didn't see a lot of scenery on the way to Maine. I guess we finally got your storm that you had a week ago (in Nevada). ... read more

This week has been our first week of our new itinerary, so we’ve been getting used to the new schedule. It was also a SUPER easy week work-wise, as we had 5 youth onboard - bit of a difference from last week’s 60! We each worked less hours in Kids Korner, but also performed extra duties as cruise staff (hosting karaoke, helping with crowd control during immigration, swiping passenger cards as they exit ship, etc.) I’ve had lots of extra time on my hands so I’ve been doing lots of knitting, as well as watching the first season of “Heroes” that I borrowed from the crew bar. (GREAT show for anyone who watches it!) Steph, Nicole, and I have been in Basic Safety training all week, so every day we had a couple hours of training. ... read more

Not even hurricane Kyle could stop the free flowing Brew at point Sebago! So before I get on to telling this story, I would like to precede it with some helpful hints at attending ANY Brew Festival. 1. Always have a designated driver. 2. If you don't have one, make sure you have at least an hour per drink to sober up before heading back to your desitnation (Tons to do at Point Sebago, so that shouldn't be a problem). 3. Talk with people, see the vendors, chat it up with folks and share their Brew. 4. Make sure you have money for the local food vendors there are many good and salty treats to be had at these festivals that compliment brews very well. 5. Be prepared for the weather. If you're cold and damp ... read more
