This Blog Entry Covers from the 14th-16th Jan So me and Tommy rose around 9am and by the time i sorted myself out it was just shy of 10am, we headed into the center of New Orleans and i saw it for the first time in day light....lol, so as had been so usual on the nights out here we had great fun attempting to find a parking space, but we eventually found a parking space and although i offered to pay for the parking as i had before offered to pay for other stuff, i was then told not to worry and Tommy my savior as per the rest of the weekend had paid for another thing. As has become customary on my trip so far, i gave Tommy a gift and lightened my load. ... read more

Tommy and his housemates were all watching american football and it was on most of the day yawnnnnnn. Mark and Scott (Tommy's housemates) decided to go to Walmart in Jefferson parish and so i went with them to get some food for the train tomorrow, so the walmart was like the other one i went to in Tuscaloosa and like everything else in America it has to be big as hell, afterall they dont do small in America. Marks mum is english and lives in Swindon the capital of cultual....lol, so Walmart highlighted the fat issue in America and everything is pre-packed and i can not imagine much nutrional value ... read more

December, 1977 - New Orleans, Houston I flew to New Orleans and took a Greyhound to Houston. New Orleans is different. It is like a piece of Europe. I saw the Duelling Oaks in City Park. Duels were fought there. It was also in this park that I beheld the Tutankhamen exhibit. These pieces were discovered by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon in 1922 in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. They are over 3,000 years old but many of them look amazingly contemporary. I met a masseuse from San Francisco. She massaged my neck and shoulders. We saw the exhibit together. We sat on the floor like two hippies. We left the park on a city bus. When we got to my stop, I gave her a kiss and jumped off the bus. It was like ... read more

First off I would like to THANK ALL THE PEOPLE WHO SUPPORTED ME ON THIS TRIP!! This entry will be about the background to the trip and the next one will be the actual trip. Some Background information: Hurricane Katrina swept through the Gulf Coast of the United States in August 2005, causing at least 1,836 deaths and over $80 billion in damages. (For more information on it check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Katrina) A group of 18 Montreal students were chosen to participate in Hillel’s Hurricane Katrina Alternative Break, a week long exploration of hands-on service, education and community building. During our winter break, we traveled to New Orleans to rebuild houses with students from Montreal, Toronto and all over the United States. I spent my days painting, puttying, and learning. It has been over two years since ... read more

Well it’s our last night in New Orleans and although another chapter in our travels opens tomorrow New Orleans has certainly made its mark on both of us and perhaps we can be audacious and use Rupert Brooke’s words and say “If I should die, think only this of me; that there’s a corner of New Orleans, that is forever England”, well the two stools at the end of the bar at the Kerry anyway! Today I bought a New Orleans Fire-fighters calendar… phwoarrr! - I only bought it because it contributes to the city homeless appeal and Mr July who sold it to me had nothing to do with it of course! Adam - you will love it…. Tonight we returned to the Alpine, where our new waiter thought we were from New Zealand!!!!! An ... read more

I think this blog is fast becoming a bit of a cuisine critique of Louisiana… AA Gill eat your heart out! Last night we went to the Alpine and dined on a splendid feast of smoked duck and spicy barbecue ribs (sorry mum but the photo’s just didn’t do it justice) our young server seemed rather new to the job and kept apologising every two minutes (in a wonderful country southern drawl) even though everything was absolutely fine. We guessed his family were on a nearby table because when we gave him a slightly over the odds $10 tip he went running up to their table to show them. Guess it meant Jim-bob, Jed-bob, Hazel-bob, Ben-bob, Lucy-bob and Rod-bob would get supper tonight. Just as we finished eating some amazing resonant drumming could be heard one ... read more

Last night was warm and balmy and very pleasant as we headed out for supper (steak for Andy and salmon for me served with dirty rice and mixed squashes and sautéed vegetables) the food tasted good but we did have to wait a while. We decided to plump for cocktails this evening - Andy choosing a spicy Louisiana bloody Mary (a rainforest in a glass as described by our server) and a pink lemonade for me… yes it was made with vodka before you ask! Of course we ended up in the Kerry where tonight’s music was supplied by a bluesy sounding James Blunt called Chip Wilson. He was an absolutely brilliant guitarist. We also met Stephen Clarkson - the in-house Irish musician; strange chap, from Galway but spoke with an American Irish lilt. He also ... read more
