Mardi Gras came early this year. It was the 5th of Feb. I had a flight to Gulfport, MS. where i had a scheduled pickup. The weather turned sour with high winds and tornado warnings. Immediately upon boarding the plane destined for Houston, we were told there would be a 2 hour ground delay and we were to disembark. We did. There was one lucky person who had volunteered to take a 1.5 hour later flight for a $200 voucher. All of us on our flight were jealous of the luck as that plane left right behind ours, see photo. Once in Houston, i discovered that my original flight from Houston to Gulfport was not delayed as expected but cancelled. I was already booked on the next flight but it too got cancelled, as did the ... read more

Arriving in The Big Easy I arrived at 1 a.m. this morning. Getting off the plane was amazing…. I've traveled further than this before but for some odd reason, the flight felt like it took forever. I sat in the Exit row, which is always my preference, but I got squished up against the window. The man net to me was elbow hoggin my space. So, again.. twas a long ass flight! My first impressions of New Orleans was the music that seemed to always playing from the moment I stepped off the plane. It was there all around me. I heard Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World playing….and in the background a whole lotta parlez vous francais. Interesting. So along I went, searching for an airport shuttle to whisk me away to Hotel D Leau ... read more

Christin drove us all the way to the Big Easy. We hit a wicked thunderstorm about an hour before we got there and saw a big 18 wheel tanker slide off the rode. Before he slid off the rode he passed us at 70 mph. I will come back and ad a bunch of text, but I needed to upload the images first. ... read more

Hey all, Right now I am enjoying the Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans with Hugh. Our New Orleans experience during this time is very wild, ranging from many drinking events, strolling along the Bourbon Street, and of course the Mardi Gras parade. On our way back, we manage to stop by University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa. Enjoy the pictures! -Cy ... read more

Our third week building did not leave us with as many sore muscles and fatigue as the second week, so I guess we're adapting. Or is it because we took off a half day Wednesday and all day Thursday to experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans and with brother Harry and sister Ann from Albuquerque? That definitely helped! We stayed overnight in the city and ate at the legendary Emerril's and Mother's. While waiting for the parade Wed. night we told the bartender that we were collecting beads for the Hippler's who could not return for the build in Slidell due to family illness. (They represent their local habitat in their county parade in Ohio and throw beads to remind people of those still so affected by Katrina.) He immediately gathered all the beads in the ... read more

Happy birthday Susan! We had breakfast at the famous Cafe du Monde. It was a sunny but cold day and it was pretty quiet in the French Quarter except for the trucks bringing in the beer for the fresh debaucheries. The tour van picked us up at the hotel and we spent the rest of the morning touring the city. Hurricane damage was everywhere but reconstruction has restored some activities. It wasn't just the floods. There was lots of damage from the wind and the water coming in through damaged roofs. It will be many years before the city is normal and a lot of the population will never return. That being said, the tourist locations are all up and running and everyone is eager to welcome the visitors and conventions that will bring the economic ... read more

Yesterday, we travelled from Houston to New Orleans along the I10 highway. We got an early start but were held up for an hour near Lake Charles by highway construction. We tried to get a swamp boat ride at Hendeson, La. but they were not operating because of the lack of tourists and bad weather. It was raining off and on and very windy. Not a problem for hardy tourists. We got to our hotel with no problems thanks to our GPS but Ron discovered that he had two sweaters missing from his bag - used them to make a pillow and left them behind. The hotel is beatiful and is right in the middle of the action on Bourbon Street - a kind of oasis in the madness. Ramada Plaza Inn on Boubon Street. We ... read more

Hope y'all had a Happy Australia Day!!! Well this will be my final blog before we get back home as we leave here on Tuesday and get back home on Thursday...hooray Kate & Fiko say with a sigh of relief. This blog will be a bit of a mish mash of suff in no particular order that I have not gotten round to telling you guys about before this... Before we left Orlando we were going to go to Cape Canaveral but it was a bit off the direct route to get back to New Orleans so when the Thompson's toldus they were going on an airboat ride we thought why not who knows if we get back to Florida again and it is something unique to this area albeit a bit further south. So we ... read more

So, Nolabeth are going to Thailand! And in 10 days. We are so excited and are beginning to pack. Nolabeth is my favorite nickname for Nolan and myself. We got that nickname in California last summer. After Jason & Rebecca's wedding in San Diego, we drove north to San Clemente and spent a few days with Jessica Devoe and her family. Colin and Jessia were trying to get their kids, Josh & Penny, excited about our visit and kept telling them that Nolan and Beth were coming. We had so much fun with Josh and Penny, from the backyard to the beach. Which wasn't that far away. We realized that Josh thought each of our names was NolaBeth, rather than Nolan and Beth. We thought that was adorable. After we left, Josh kept asking when Nolabeth ... read more
