Sunday 10thFebruary: The Big Easy aka New Orleans. We sailed up the Mississippi River during the night and were alongside the cruise ship terminal in Central New Orleans by normal wake-up time – although I’d been woken up much earlier by major engine vibrations as the ship manoeuvred up to the dock. After breakfast we got off the ship and spent 45 minutes clearing US Immigration then we were met by a lady tour guide who took us to a bus and a two hour tour of New Orleans: much of it spent in traffic delays as there were many parades being held in town to celebrate Mardi Gras. Our first stop was a cemetery: New Orleans is apparently famous for its cemeteries. Then off to City Park, a 1200 acre former plantation which was very ... read more

I awoke to day three of our maiden voyage to the familiar sound of rain gently falling onto Stormy's roof. I listened closely for the dreaded "ping", but quickly determined the maisture was indeed only rain! Our intention was to head south for our first trip, to escape the cold and hopefully get some sun - I even brought snorkeling gear! I guess I am forever an optimist! As Cynde has so aptly discussed, we have yet to find warmth or sunshine. But a cold rainy day of retirement on the road still seems much better than heading to the office! Our first day on the road began at 2:30 a.m. on Monday. I couldn't sleep and it was really cold, so I woke Cynde and coerced her to moving her slumber activity to the coach. ... read more

So, it's been a while since we last wrote. Back to nye which we spent in crazy New Orleans. Liz recommended we stay at this really fun hostel, India House. It lived up to our expectations and we met some really wonderful people who we explored New Orleans with, even if we were lame and spent our first night in bed early. The fist real day we spent there we explored the French quarter and the markets, even having a bit of gator and some gumbo. We also enjoyed beignets and chicory coffee at the incredibly popular Cafe du Monde with Khrissy, Nora, and Kate. It was interesting, but not really sure why its so popular, but fun and cheap to do. We then decided we needed to buy some vodka before going out that night. ... read more

Happy New Year to every one of you and your families. We also hope you had a very merry Christmas. Being on the road at Christmas is difficult, one of us was kinda weepy, but avoiding the snow storms in the north has its advantages. At Christmas we were still at Gulf State Park in Alabama. We really like this park and might stay here for a month next winter as this state park allows extended stays during the winter months. We did have some scary weather, but the weather man kept saying how unusual it all was - we hope he is right if we come back for a longer time. From our site we were able to push aside some cattails and launch our kayaks . On our paddle we watched as an osprey ... read more

Merry Christmas, today we celebrated christmas with a small sleep in. At 10am we had our group chrissy brunch, where some of us desided to dress uo in ugly christmas sweaters an cheesy head wear.We sat around eating and descussing the previous noghts events for about an hour or so, then we were off. Being our only free day in New orleans we all decided to go look around and see the sights. As Marlee didn't make it to breakfast in a small group of us desided to head out on a Maccas search before we meet back at the hotel at 1pm to head outan d explore the city. Nothiing was open, nothing except a Denny's with a line a mile long of hungry people, just like us, so we bailed on breakfast and headed ... read more

After arriving at such a late hour from Vancouver via Dallas, Texas we had decided to only go to the typical New Orleans centre the next morning, and as we had been pretty busy the last few weeks we didn't actually get our butts into the centre till lunch time on Tuesday. Now this Tuesday was a notable one for one main thing only, no not that hugely publicised election between Obama and Romney, this was the ONE place that Ben wanted to go to when we set out all those months ago. "Lauren, " he said, "we can go anywhere your heart desires, but I want to go to New Orleans". So Lauren was set the impossible task of working this in using the American Airlines miles off her dad to tie in with hiring ... read more

Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778New Orleans (Awlins as pronounced here) was a Liz choice and it was a good call - we've had an excellent time. From arriving on Tuesday in time for a cruise up and down Bourbon Street, a decent dinner, a jazz session at the Preservation Hall then back to the hotel to watch CNN as the election results came in and see it live as Romney conceded and Obama made his speech. What a result - now it's all the post election analysis and predictions of the end of the Republican Party. If only we could look forward to a similar fate for the Tories!Wednesday morning we joined a walking tour of the French Quarter, courtyards and cemetery. Following a lunch that consisted of lots of bread (a spinach and artichoke dip served inside ... read more

Today we found out what that statue was all about that was in our photos from yesterday. That was the man that saved Americans from being British - He won the battle of New Orleans - the last battle of the war of 1812 Major General Andrew Jackson (7th president) We went on a paddle wheel voyage on the mighty Mississippi today and learned a lot of cool facts. Many of the docks on the river are still destroyed by Katrina. The river is 200 feet deep where we departed (the deepest section of the river). Third largest river in the world after the Amazon and the Nile. Then it was into the air conditioned museum (where the statue is located) so much to learn, so many things happened here..... As we were standing at the ... read more
