The big change in plans? I decided I really wanted to be home on Saturday morning. So we made sure it was cool with the hotel to check out early . Packed up to head out. Breakfast of pastries & OJ again. Headed south and decided to scrap outdoor stuff as it was pouring rain. Found the USS Orleck but wasn't open just yet. We took the opportunity to gas up and stuff. Back at 10am opening. I want to tell you we loved our tour of the Orleck but it is in rough shape. Our tour guide a volunteer named Steve was awesome and no big deal that I asked so many questions and he answered each one best he could. The Orleck has a long history ending with the Turkish Navy - so if ... read more

Trip Data: Holt, Florida – Lake Charles, LA – 417 miles The morning started off with a sinus headache from the sand covered swamp. Torrential rain all morning did not help the packing up procedure that in perfect dry conditions is no quick task. Visualize Mary Poppins in her raincoat when the canon goes off and everyone man’s their positions, floors clear, aerials down, gas off, things strapped down and doors latched before the walls slide in and we hold our breath until they are in. Add some wet sand on everything including the dogs and there you have it. Solid downpour from Florida through Alabama, Mississippi and half of Louisiana standing at every truckstop trying to get Moppy to poop, as she is very particular and doesn’t like to get her feet wet made for ... read more

Lake Charles, LA--Sunday, February 10th Left the park in time to drive to Lake Charles Civic Center by noon and stand in line for an all-you-can-eat traditional Louisiana cuisine for $7. The local community college cooking school prepared about 7 or 8 dishes they plopped on your large plate to taste. I have never seen a styrofoam plate with so many tiny compartments for food. At the end of the serving line, they were serving bowls of gumbo and both bread pudding and a King's cake for dessert. The King's cake is sort of like a large football sized and shaped cinnamon roll frosted in Mardi Gras colors of gold, green and purple with a tiny baby doll baked inside. They are served at parties and Mardi Gras balls with the person who finds the baby ... read more

Monday, February 11th It poured all night long and in the morning we were concerned about how high the lagoon had crept up to Rosie back bumper. Decided to be on the safe side and went to the ranger station and got assigned a new space on a bit higher ground near the laundry. With the rain continuing to come down hard and no parades scheduled, we decided to just hang out and endeavored to keep dry in the campground. We did manage to watch a pileated woodpecker and several other birds in the trees in our camp spot before we moved and some water fowl, egrets, and herons in the Lake and Calcasieu River as we drove by in our move. Tuesday, February 12th Drove by the local Micky D's for ... read more

Saturday, February 9th , 2013--Sam Houston Jones State Park and Lake Charles, LA Overcast and 61 degrees at 12:15. This 1,087 acre park has been kept as much as possible in its natural state with mixed pine and hardwood forest. Our camp spot was quite nice and backed into a small lagoon coved by duck weed that has Spanish moss draped trees standing in it. We were here to take in the Mardi Gras festivities in and around Lake Charles. Mardi Gras officially starts on 12th night of Christmas, which was January 6th this year. It culminates with Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras, in French), which is the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of 40 days of Lent. It is a time of balls, parades, and parties with elaborate costumes all organized by various Krewes. ... read more

Journey from hell for Mike leaving UK for the US. A 4.30am check-in time at Heathrow meant it wasn't worth staying with friends nearby or checking into a hotel, so spent a few hours sleeping on the floor of Terminal 1, along with a few other lost souls - thank goodness I had my sleeping bag with me. LHR to Frankfurt OK, but the Frankfurt to Houston flight left late because of mechanical problems (with the gate, not the plane), so it was always going to be a rush to make the connection to Lake Charles. US immigration was the usual laborious process, though I did manage to get a single smile from the officer - be thankful for small mercies. After traversing the airport on the shuttle train, I arrived just minutes after the (last) ... read more

I seemed a little down today as we were travelled to San Houston Jones State Park. I wasn't sure whether it was the fact that one of my blisters on my shoulder had burst, or that some weird rash had appeared on my nose. Either way I felt I couldn’t seem to catch a break. First it was the cold sore at the start of the trip, then the swollen feet, the numerous bites, which we’ve all suffered, the burns and blisters and now the nose thing. It made me think what could be possibly next - bubonic plague? Another possibility could be that tomorrow was my birthday. It would be a significant one, as it will be my first one on my own. I know that the rest of the guys were planning a little ... read more

Today our hosts picked us up early to go buy crabbing supplies and we went crabbing on the bayous of the Blue Crab Rec. Area. We caught a lot of crab using chicken necks on a string---easy tackle set up!! We ate the famous local boudin which was absolutely wonderful and spicy and the flavors were amazing. We went to the Wetlands Walkway in the Sabine Refuge but the huge deerflies and mosquitoes were bad so we cut our hike short. Then we went shelling at Holly Beach on the Gulf of Mexico and finally took a ferry to Cameron. There we went along the Cameron Prairie Refuge and Pintail Wildlife Drive where we saw lots of alligators in the wild sitting in the bayous---so very cool. We saw lots of turtles too and beautiful birds ... read more

We left our wonderful lake house in Seguin, TX today and it was hard not to cry as the people and community of Seguin were so special and touching and it was such a memorable place. It was 76 degrees when we left mid morning and after 3 hours we crossed the Sabine River into Louisiana and then into Sulphur, LA at 3:15 p.m. Our hosts picked us up right way for a tour of the Lakes and parks and then took us to Steamboat Bills for crawfish pistolette, stuffed shrimp and crab, catfish and slaw. It was the packed local joint and very good. I had to go to several places after dinner to find a place to sell me some wine or anything for a cocktail on a Sunday evening---the grocery stores had shelves ... read more
