A beautiful day for a drive to tour the countryside of Kentucky and Indiana. We head off for the resort town of French Lick. First we hop aboard the tourist railroad and see the scenery. Then off to the grand hotels. The area called French Lick, Indiana, site of the French Lick Springs Resort and one of the earliest outposts in the middle - Western wilderness, was first settled more than 200 years ago by French traders. After the discovery of rich mineral springs, which attracted animals that flocked to lick the waters and wet rocks, this valley became known among the settlers as “The Lick”. A rich colorful history included such famous names as John Barrymore, Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, President Roosevelt, the Truman’s, the Reagan’s and Joe and Rose Kennedy. It was there in ... read more

We stop to give the car a well deserved washing! Now, we are ready for the start of the 75th Anniversary AACA Jubilee in Louisville, Kentucky. This is a very well organized group, and we have been to a lot of car shows, tours, and car related events. They welcome us, despite the fact that we had not registered on time. Their organized packets are generous with goodies, and the itineraries are filled with very detailed maps and fun spots to visit. The first afternoon we visit a private collector’s museum of great cars, then that night is an ice cream social on the side of the Ohio River. We have met up with some new friends from our Hillsborough AACA Club, Jim and Judy Briley. They are so much fun, and we have a delicious ... read more

So here's my travel blog, I hope to update it occasionally with tidbits (mostly photos) during the next 2 months, but as internet access may be patchy at best, no promises. I've been packing, unpacking, remembering things I should bring, and repacking. I'll be have to take a photo of me with my pack; it's sure to look ridiculous! Feel free to e-mail me while I'm gone (frances.wilburn@tufts.edu) or facebook me, I'll try to get in touch when I can! That's all for the first entry, can't believe I'm leaving in 2 days!!!!!... read more

Saturday March 13 We arrived yesterday. After 36 hours of travel, we made the 30 minute flight from Nairobi to Kissumu. After the short flight and our feet were on the ground, we counted suitcases. Miracle -- they all arrived! Is this a good omen for our trip? We had each brought extra suitcases filled with books, clothing, vitamins and special gifts for our children at the Vihiga Children's Home. We were met by our van driver, Moses. Our first stop was the grocery where we stocked up on bottled water and other supplies. The children have developed a love of peanut butter so we bought jars of it along with jelly and loaves of bread. PB&J -- a special treat for the kids! Next stop, MBale High School were we pulled D. (note, I will ... read more

Tuesday March 16 Hello All! Jambo! Habari? (how are you?) Patrick, the chef at Sosa, along with Pauline who manages Sosa, took our diet and figured out quantities for 80 children for one day and per month. Then they estimated the cost of ingredients. Oh dear, we Americans and our expectations. This ideal diet would cost over 5X what we have to spend on food for a month!! In addition, as Debby, Tish, and Arlene have visited the secondary schools, they have asked about what the children in other schools are fed. Our children receive close to a typical diet. We are now thinking small -- how can we insure that our children receive fruit once or twice a week, maybe meat or fish once a week, and a little something for breakfast. Extremely expensive items ... read more

Wednesday (cont.) Interviewing the children is a life highlight for me. They are sweet, well-behaved, earnest, and many have a lovely sense of humor. While part of me feels I shouldn't look for this, it's also true that they are very appreciative of all that we do. Their personalities vary -- some outgoing, some shy and quiet. Some are very very bright, some slower. Their English is vastly improved compared to 4 years ago. Yesterday I interviewed a little 9 year old girl who was as articulate as any 9 year old I've interviewed in the U.S. Some themes: they need shoes -- both sports and school shoes. The shoes we bought last year are, not surprisingly, worn and ill-fitting. They love storybooks -- and it's clear that reading stories are part of what's improved their ... read more

3 Days of driving, music and porn in the Heartland (with 44 pictures...pictures tell the story better than I can...so please scroll through the pics...they can be hidden on this site so you have to keep clicking next to see them all) …1600 miles later and I’m in Louisville, Kentucky. I’ve been through here before but like so many other cities in this country, I was in and out for work and didn’t really experience the area. It seems like a nice enough “small-town” type city but it’s not dark yet and like the song says ‘the freaks come out at night’. If I have learned one thing over the past 3 days driving through America’s heartland it’s that this country is no safer, no cleaner and definitely no less strange than most of the countries ... read more

I was in Louisville, Kentucky a little while ago for business and had an amazing time! Before the business part of the trip I got to stay in the Cabins of Birch Hollow in Spade, KY for a night. Holy cow those cabins are amazing! If you and your family happen to be out that way, I recommend staying there. Multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. We took a sky lift up to the top of the gorge to see the Natural Bridge. It was exactly like a ski lift but much steeper. Good thing I'm not afraid of heights! The next day I got to see how Woodford Reserve bourbon is made. Very interesting and long, long process. After the tour of the distillery, I went to where the Kentucky Derby is held: Churchill Downs. It was ... read more
