May 12, Tuesday Fruit for breakfast and on the way after a lazy get ready. Low clouds threatened me with rain much of the day, but the most I got was a little light misting. I stopped for a great pulled pork barbeque sandwich somewhere in Arkansas, and chatted with a H/D guy and the owner for a bit. Later on I stopped to troubleshoot my music hookup, because it was driving me crazy with the volume going up and down. I removed the filter and that solved it. Must be a bad connection somewhere in the leads going to or from the filter. In the meantime, an old guy on an old Ural side-car rig stopped to see if I needed help. We had a nice chat about some of his riding on the Ural. ... read more

When I was very young, I discovered my desire to travel, my appreciation for natural beauty, for people who both looked and sounded unlike me. These were the years when my family packed up some of our best clothing, including our favorite sandals and swim suits, and jetted down to Florida for 5- and 7-day cruises. We traveled the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and eventually, Hawaii. We stayed in 3- and 4- star hotels, ate what we wanted, and took advantage of local tour operations. Needless to say, I was blessed. Somewhere in between those luxury vacations, however, I took a different kind of vacation - camping, in the middle of Kentucky. I'll tell you now, that was with a friend's family, as I don't think my family ever owned a tent that was big ... read more

Repeat As we pulled up to the Seelbach Hilton I realized that unintentionally the last time we were here was exactly seven years ago in 2002 when we were living in Cincinnati and came down to visit the city and spend some time in Bourbon Country. It didn't feel like a long time ago but seven years is a long time and the city had changed a little from how we remembered it, but it still remains a city that seems to lag 10 years behind the rest of the Midwest . . . it's downtown is completely lifeless and the only attempt at urban revival is Fourth Street Live which is still seen as a great project at a time when such project's times have passed elsewhere. Retail in Louisville We stopped on our way ... read more

We’re on our way to Tennessee. We spent the past three days in Louisville, and even with the things we’ve seen here, I have a fear that we’ve missed places where we should have stopped…there’s so much history in this part of the country, and so many spots that I taught about in Social Studies. But we can’t stop at every place. (did that sound like Bob’s voice?!) Anyway, here are some random thoughts: southern Michigan and Indiana grow mums, and ship them nationwide. My point is, there are so many thousands of mum plants everywhere. The plants are huge~~I’d have trouble getting my arms around the tops~~and sell for around $3.00. Sometimes they’re $5, but usually less. Businesses (hotels, offices, “unique gift stores”, etc.) will have two dozen stacked up in the front. It’s awesome! ... read more

As we drove through Ohio on our way to Louisville, there was one place we had to stop for Grandpa Linscott: White Castle. Cody had never been there before, so we decided to give it a go. We ate our burgers as we drove from Columbus to Cincinnati. When we first drove in to Louisville, we (of course) got lost and headed west to Indiana. We finally got turned around, and found a spot to sleep for the night. The next morning we headed back in to town, where our first stop was to the Louisville Slugger Factory in downtown. The factory was really neat; out front is a huge 120 foot tall, 9 foot diameter baseball bat. In the front lobby is a huge 20 foot baseball glove. We weren't allowed to take any pictures ... read more

Well, it has been a couple of days since I wrote anything in here! In that period of time we have managed to cross several states...Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, and are now in Louisville, Kentucky. On our way out of La Junta, we visited Bent's Fort just outside the town. Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site features a reconstructed 1840’s adobe fur trading post on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail where traders, trappers, travelers, and Plains Indian tribes came together in peaceful terms for trade. We stuck around and had an interesting two hour tour of the fort. The interesting part was that it was not a military fort but a private entrepreneur's place of business. At the time it was in its heyday (mid 1800s), it was 600 miles from the nearest town ... read more

We did a drive through tour of Lexington City, passed Transylvania University on the way to the Bluegrass Airport War Museum, where Geoff took a personal guided tour, with a retired pilot. It was a very cold morning about 5c. Off to Pleasant Hill Shaker Museum, which is a complete Shaker township, we met the broom maker, the cooper, the shaker box maker and they all showed us their skills. Too bad I couldn't fit a broom in the suitcase..... I would of had one ! I did get a shaker box ! The workmanship of the shakers is down to perfection. A rocking chair would look great on the back deck at KB !! We were the last to leave at 5.30pm.... they kicked us out ! We travelled onto Louisville and the sun came ... read more

Ready for another chronicle of adventures traipsing across the globe? We are! Tomorrow we head for Europe. Yeah, yeah we were in Paris just a few months ago but this time work is sending us to Poland for a week. Then since we will the there already and can't pass up the opportunity, we will take a week of vacation and whip through Budapest, Vienna and Prague. So tomorrow we shall cross the great pond as we sleep (or try to) and wake up bleary-eyed in Paris. From there we head to Warsaw. We'll spend one day there and then head south. So, we are just letting you all know that this blog is being resurrected once again. At least it will give me something to do in the late evenings after dinner and I can ... read more

I apologize for the delay in my writing. After the loss of my camera and bike in September I was momentarily plunged into the shadow of a defeated mentality, and lost inspiration to write. I had lost the ability to share pictures with my words and thought that my words alone were probably not enough to keep your attention. This lull in my mood did not beat me, but by the time I had regained my inspiration I was out of the habit of writing and long since caught up in yet another whirlwind of adventure which I could not pull myself away from for long enough to reflect upon from the outside. But for what it's worth I would like to think back and fill in some of the larger holes I left behind so ... read more
