I leave for my travels in tomorrow morning, and will arrive in Malta on "Day 1.". Bills are paid, flowers watered, laundry in the dryer.... I just "checked in" with Delta, and enjoyed this part of the boarding pass: the boarding pass for Malta says "Malta, Malta, Malta," no seat information, time, etc. I hope that is not a problem. But, here I come. Next post will not be from Topeka Kansas!... read more

I picked up our foreign currency from the bank. It makes you feel rich, all those 10,000 notes from Hungary! Actually they are worth around $40.00 USD. I got a few Euros, Croatian Kunas, and Hungarian Forints, so we won't starve.... read more

4 days and counting down.... I have spent the morning REpacking!!! Space is very precious in a 16"x24"x8" suitcase (yes, I measured it)... that is 3072 cubic inches, or a little less than 2 cubic feet. We will be spending 4 weeks around heat, sun, sand and water; another 8 days in the Alps; and inbetween in urban city environments. Shoes are the priority. AND I still have to get the cameras packed.... read more

10 days until I leave on my trip!!! Grades are turned in, students are graduated, summer fun is ahead. Things are beginning to fall into place. I have places to stay in all of the stops except Zagreb and Budapest, and much of the transportation has been researched. Some tickets will have to be purchased the day of, but at least we know where to find the stations and whether to travel by bus or train. Most of my packing is finished, except for the hardest and most important part: the cameras!... read more

4/25/2012 - Got woke up early today with the news that Dakota, our granddaughter; had broken her arm while playing volleyball. Filled up with propane and gasoline before leaving Dodge City, KS. Stopped in Greensburg, KS to see the "Big Well", the largest hand dug well in the USA. The well was closed for viewing due to construction around the well. Will re-open on May 26th. Continued on to Coffeyville, KS. This is the hometown of the Daltons. Also was the town where the gang attempted to rob two banks at the same time. This did not work out to well for the Dalton Gang due to one of the banks having a timelock on the safe. The ten minute delay waiting on the timelock allowed the townspeople to realize what was happening, gather together, get ... read more

4/24/2012 - Before starting out today, we had breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs, and biscuits. Biscuits cooked by Jack in the Taylor's oven and the rest cooked by me - - Shelby T. Visited Boot Hill today. Boot Hill got it's name from the fact that those buried in Boot Hill were unknown in the area, broke, of a reputation such that the townspeople would not bury them in the church cemetery. They were typically wrapped in a blanket fully dressed, even with their "boots" on and buried. Hince the name "Boot Hill". The museum was interesting. Later rode out to a viewpoint of the Santa Fe Trail. Not a lot to see here except the historical markers. Had jalapeno burgers on the grill for supper - - yummmmmmmmy!!! Watched the results of Dancing With The ... read more

4/23/2012 - Left the motorhome around 11am headed to St Jacobs Well. This is a natural well out in the rolling hills of Kansas which has never been known to dry up and also no one knows how deep it is. It is known to have been visited by peoples of this area and those traveling through for hundreds of years. The water is a clear brown color. The imagination can run wild while standing by the well. While in this area of the Big Basin Reserve, we did some riding looking for the bison. One road was washed out at a draw, so Aleta says I went back to my teen years - - - she covered her eyes and I made a new road up out of the draw. Once safely on top, Jack ... read more

After a year and a half of working my way onward through the application process, I am finally going. Note to the wise, cross your t's and dot your i's during the application process or it will bite you in the butt. Because of a missing date on a medical form, I was delayed another 3 months before getting my invitation. And this is my ideal situation! I will be absurdly busy with my three main projects in Zambia which are agricultural sustainability (going from village to village assessing needs and developing solutions), environmental education (working with school teachers to create environmentally focused clubs to help cut back on the deforestation), and micro-entrepreneurship (shadowing merchants and creating working as well as supporting successful ones). I can't tell you which one I am more excited for, because ... read more
