What a day of driving. When I left Door County around 9 am I thought I was good to go to make it through Chicago and arrive at my stop for the evening by late afternoon. What was I thinking??? It took me 4 hours to drive the 100 miles or so from the WI - IL state line to Indiana. And the last part of the route to get around Chicago was my plan C!!! I had every intention of splitting Chicago wide open on I-94 and motor right through downtown. In hindsight it might have been best to stick with my original plans. But upon hearing it was an hour drive on the JFK (I-94) to downtown, I opted to go around I-294 (which is the way the signs route you to Indiana). It ... read more

We got a early start on Saturday morning, finishing a lot of last minute packing and loading of the Outback, our transportation for this trip. Doug and I had stayed up relatively late working on preparations for the trip, so we were dragging at first. It was a nice morning - the sun was out and it was warm, but with the promise of getting hot and sticky before the day was over. We finally loaded the last bag, said good-bye to the cats one last time, double-checked the lights were off and doors & windows locked, snapped a picture of the three of us and took off. We were stocked up with bottled water and a variety of snacks to help save money and reduce the number of stop we had to make. We ... read more

My husband (Doug), my stepson (Nick) and I are planning our longest road trip thus far - 12 days - taking us from our home in Bloomington, Indiana to Bangor, Maine to visit with family. It's not a great time to be driving so far with how expensive gas is, but I wanted to make this trip last summer and we weren't able to, so I'm not letting gas prices stop us this year. Along the way, we're planning some side trips to keep things interesting and to break up the long stretches of road between here and Maine. In general, this Route Map gives an idea of where we're headed. Tentative Itinerary: Day 1 - (June 2, 2007) Hit the road and travel almost 600 miles to Niagara Falls. Day 2 - Visit Niagara Falls ... read more

MaryAnne teaches at the EMT school in Bloomington and since there was a class in session she needed to be there for a few hours Saturday morning. The Air Evac helicopter was landing for training purposes and so the timing of my visit couldn't have been better. The crew spent nearly an hour answering questions and allowing students to get in and around the helicopter. The class size is about 20 students...all ages, including a retired American Airlines pilot starting a new career! The school houses the students as they go through their two week training. Here are a few pictures from the day. ... read more

OLIVER WINERY Flew to Indiana this weekend to visit Girly Whirly and she surprised me with a visit to the Oliver Winery on the way to Bloomington. It was my first visit to a winery and though this one seems small, they bottle a large variety of wines. We sampled several but nothing really appealed to me except the 2004 Shiraz Reserve. I seem to be losing my taste for wine, unless it was a very good year; this Shiraz seems to be. The grounds are beautiful with flowers, waterfalls and a large pond where a family of friendly geese spend their time chasing the large coi. It was a fun place to spend a few hours. ... read more

30/04/07 - 02/05/07 Shipshewana, Northern Indiana With a week of the rental car left and in Chicago already we decided to head out of town for a few days, whichever way the wind would carry us and see the surrounding area for a while. The wind first took us north up the North Shore Drive into a very prosperous residential district with mansions and lake houses for the wealthy Chicagoans (is that a word?) to strut their stuff. We got so lost within the rabbit warren of the North Shore that we had finally had to ask directions to the Interstate from the bunch of Fireman chilling outside their fire station (much to Jen’s delight!!) We had planned to grab an extra state to notch up on our belts and nip into Wisconsin to Milwaukee but ... read more

OMG it's true...I am now sleeping with Grandma Debbie. Welcome to this great big world Quintin Alan Hausman!!!! 7 lbs 7 oz and 21 inches long. Born at 9:25 3-31-07. We know that was a couple of days ago but we have been busy enjoying this little guy. He is 100% healthy and beautiful of course! Josh and Angel did an awesome job getting thru their 1st birthing experience together. We think it was harder on us in the delivery room than them. It was a great experience for all of us. As you know we are back in the States and trying to adjust to the lack of hiking, riding and swimming in the rivers and waterfalls every day. My driving is getting better although I am really not liking having to pay attention ... read more

Well, well, well, I finally made it back to good ol' Indiana. And while I'm still experiencing nasty reverse culture shock, I thought I would hold on to my travel blog for one more entry and entertain the loyal few with my adventures driving across country (Marcheta this is for you!). Back in the States & lovely Laguna Beach, I spent two days soaking up the California sunshine (well, that's a total lie...I rather hid from everyone, but my wonderful girlfriends...no need to deal with the "quality" men in California anymore ;). It was wonderful seeing the friends & of course, spending lots of quality time at The Saloon...I cannot even begin to say how much I am going to miss everyone at the bar--you made the place home for me. I promise I'll be ... read more

January was a busy month! Long hours of packing up all of our earthly belongings and cleaning out the house, trying to sell the darn car, making travel arrangements, and several fun (albeit emotional) going away parties. Our co-workers treated both of us to drinks and lunches, and each of our families threw us very nice going away parties. We just wanted to say thanks again to our parents, families, friends, and co-workers in providing so much help and support to each of us so we could make this journey to New Zealand. We both appreciate everything you have done! The photos with this entry are from our going away party at the DiGiusto house. (I think we forgot to take our camera to anything else!) ... read more

Believe it or not, Mike actually rolled out of bed shortly after the alarm went off at 5.30 am! Anyone who knows Mike, knows that he is NOT a morning person. I got up and Mike announced that we was sleeping til 6. I figured as much but as I was getting ready in the other bathroom, I heard the shower go on in the other bathroom! WOW!!!!! I was ready in my usual 15 mins and got the rest of the stuff into the truck and RV. Kitties settled in quite nicely after about 15 mins of crying! Jazzy is much better than Misty who is the big MOUNTAIN kitty!! WE were on the road by 7 pm. It took us 2 days to get this MOFO packed and I am sure we brought too ... read more
