After breakfast Jon Walker, new president of FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association) spoke about new initiatives and current benefits of belonging to the organization. Much of the day was unscheduled so I headed back into Shipshewana. Menno-Hof is a non-profit information center teaching about the life and faith of the Amish and Mennonites. Excellent information was presented through multi-media, historical environments, a tornado room, colorful displays, and informative guides who answered all my questions. After my tour I headed down the street to Yoders Department Store and Yoders Hardware Store - both totally packed with almost anything an Amish family (and me) could want. Horses with buggies were parked outside. On the way back to the campground I passed several RV and trailer factories plus an antique car show. Back home I grabbed cheese for lunch, ... read more

Baked oatmeal with maple syrup for breakfast... delicious. The caterers for the week have been great with a varied menu and lots of fruit and vegetables. Cool, dreary, on-and-off rain showers as Hurricane Irma made its final push north. The first morning session was presented by a fellow Roadtrekker who volunteers with his wife each spring at Manzanar National Historic Site in Southern California. Sab was seven in 1942 when his family was taken to this Japanese War Internment Camp. His presentation started with a video overview including voices presenting snippets of life in the camp and personal perspectives. He described his experiences as a young farm boy coming to the camp, how the community organized itself and began farming and producing whatever they needed. He stressed that there were many good stories in spite of ... read more

I woke up early this morning - cool day, moisture on the windows. It was still dark so I took a chance and headed to one of the two showers in our part of the campground. Lots of people here for only two showers but I lucked out. On my way to breakfast I saw two guys with ladders washing and waxing neighboring RVs. Seemed like a good idea to me as I have never been able to actually clean my solar panels, rooftop, middle little window on top RT. After breakfast and the special meeting for Newbies, I came back as they were working on it. Good to have it waxed and it looks great. Hope not too many bugs on the way home. Now sitting with my computer at the picnic table trying to ... read more

I've had my Roadtrek for four years and have driven over 23,000 miles through rolling hills, plains, and deserts, up mountains, into cities and through small towns. So when I saw the listing for the 2017 Roadtrek International Chapter Rally in Goshen, Indiana, I signed up. I stopped Sunday in Naperville, Illinois, for birthday cake and a visit with Aunt Milda, then dinner, dominoes, and a comfortable bed at Matt & Laura's. This morning, after a stop at Dunkin Donuts, I drove south to I-80, then east on the Indiana Tollway to Exit 92: Elkhart. This area is Amish County with several small towns, shops, restaurants, farm fields. Our home for the rally is the campgrounds at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen. I pulled in just-in-time for registration where, as a first-timer or newbie, ... read more

Our niece, Heidi lives in Indiana so our 1st stop was to be at a birthday party for her husband. They were holding the party at a park and we made the party just as food was being served. We’d planned to make something for the potluck but alas, we arrived too late to take the time to cook. We shared our disposable cups with them. Heidi looks good but steroids have left her bloated and red from the radiation. She was wearing a hat at the picnic so that we didn’t see the baldness. Even with a bunch of people attending the party we found time to sit and talk a bit. We did go on to Heidi’s house from the party spending the afternoon doing cake stuff and then visited with my sister-in-law in ... read more
