We woke up pretty early at around 5:30, and I finally forced myself out of bed by 6. Meanwhile, my sweet wife had gone to the nearby gas station to get us some fresh coffee. When I'd gone to bed, I felt fairly comfortable, except for my My Pillow travel pillow which was a bit too small for use in the bed. Sometime a bit later, I got so cold that I had major chills and shakes, waking up my wife. I put on extra clothes and my wife shared her little blanket, and I finally settled down enough to fall back to sleep. Tomorrow we will buy another pillow for me, and I'll dress a bit warmer after this. After getting dressed and finishing off our coffees, we were on our way to our first ... read more

This year for vacation, I had originally planned on walking the Camino again, this time with my wife! Unfortunately, Spain and most of the places along the Camino were not fully open, nor were military space available flights... available. Pardon the seeming redundancy. Instead, my wife had expressed a desire to either visit Alaska or the United States Northwest. We opted for the Northwest, and I spent a good bit of time exploring possible sights. After showing this info to my wife, along with locations of nearby KOAs, I started making reservations and developing web pages for each place. A quick rundown before I really start Day 1. We fly out of Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport on July 12th at 6am, change planes at Dallas/Fort Worth, and arrive at Boise Idaho's airport around 11am, Mountain Time. We ... read more

Mileage 301.2 We got up and ate our breakfast then came back to the room to book hotels for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and finish up the blog. Then we were off. We had googled to try to find a welcome center for Idaho since we were just over the border and needed maps (can’t use google maps if you don’t have internet and you don’t have your destination in before you lose internet). Google last night didn’t find anything. Of course we left the hotel, drove maybe 2-3 miles and there it was. Oh, well, we bought maps last night. The speed limit on I 84 is 80 mph. Cool. We passed a truck pulling a triple trailer. That was a first for me. Further down the road we decided to take a detour and ... read more

Today was one of the longest drives we will have on the trip. Over 500 miles and almost 8 hours is enough to wear on anybody's nerves, but add a 4 and 5 year old into the mix and well..... things escalate. We have been limiting their exposure recently to ipads and TV which overall has been a very positive experience, but four hours into our eight hour odyssey and I caved. Out came the laptop, Bluetooth audio to the car speakers, fade them to rear, add a couple of towels on the back windows and boom! We were in movie theatre mode. Although Antonio initially resisted the plan, he quickly agreed that listening to the soundtrack of Angry Birds was a small price to pay for the relative peace that ensued. It seems that you ... read more

Wild horses-Rolling Stones (or Krajcik) It annoys me that every time someone asks me about my practice and beliefs I get all uncomfortable and try to justify myself. It seems that I am ashamed of those things, but why? They make me, me! They might be wrong or stupid, but fine, I’ll learn why and become a better person! Beliefs are born from our cultural background, personal values and things we learn through time. The people surrounding you that you trust will influence you and share beliefs with you. Either it is a cultural thing in your area our something your intellectual neighbour told you, the idea now as a place in your head. You will then question the reason behind this with your own set of values; does it make sense? Is there any proof ... read more

Woke up to rain. Waited for a lull, then packed up the bikes, it was raining again as we left. The spray from the big trucks is quite something and I could see Jim, in front of me, disappear into the spray of the oncoming truck knowing I had a couple of seconds before my turn, then its like a frenzy of water, wind, noise, and blindness before its all gone again - its a bit like a water flume ride! When the rain stopped, the wind started, and we road across Idaho. To sum up Idaho - wind, seed potatoe capital and God, and they seem obsessed with watering everything, but it does mean its very green. We visited 'Craters of the Moon' a volcanic landscape that looked like a gigantic slag heap, but apparently ... read more

We planned to do the underground tour in Pendleton, however due to a special event over the weekend, it was closed on Monday. Instead we toured the Pendleton Woolen Mill, where they make Native American blankets. We were able to see the entire process in action. Interestingly, the geometric shapes on the blankets are made using punch card technology (60's era)in the machine. The other blankets with cowboy, wildlife and other images use computer technology. Monday was a long travel day heading to Twin Falls, Idaho. We originally planned to stop at the Boise Capitol, however, an iPhone malfunction caused us to stop at an Apple store instead. We found the mountain roads in Oregon much more stunning than those in Idaho. We decided to take a scenic detour by the Snake River Canyon Scenic Byway ... read more
