The 6th Annual Korean Festival was held at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. According to the MC there are approximately 40,000 Koreans in Hawaii, not a very large number or maybe about 5% of the local population. They first arrived in Hawaii during the early 1900’s to work on the Pineapple plantations. It seems as if only during the 1980’s another large wave arrived, who pretty much maintained their language and culture and weren’t assimilated as the earlier wave. Instead of laborers, many opened up their own business, large and small. With the popularity of Korean Soaps and movies, in spite of their small numbers their impact and presence are pretty much felt. Korean restaurants and Delis are everywhere and popular lunch choices for take outs as the food are very tasty and plentiful. Upon arrival at ... read more

Our bags are mostly packed and we are just about ready to go. It's Monday night here in Honolulu and in the morning we will depart at 750AM on China Airlines flight C001 to Taipei. We have a 1.5 hour layover there and then we depart on flight CI695 to Bangkok. This will be the shortest flight that we've ever done to Thailand. We'll arrive at 4PM Bangkok time instead of the usual 11PM. That's good because our flight the next morning departs at 0645. We're hoping that China Airlines is good and that they have in-flight entertainment systems(the personal kind) on the Honolulu-Taipei leg. We have a portable DVD player for Kevin so hopefully he can stay happy during the 10 hour flight watching his favorite shows. I've got a new book and a couple ... read more

Arrived in Hawaii a few days ago, woke up in Fiji at 9 am. Was in the hostel in Hawaii before 10am the same day, gotta love the 22 hour time difference for a 5 hour flight. My goodness Americans are dramatic, getting through the airport was a mission on zero sleep. They really should chillax more. Well, booked into this hostel for the entire 8 days. Not really what I wanted to do but not much of a choice when you have little cash, no credit card and everywhere is booked for the 4th. Not really been doing too much, I'm still and I think will forever be on Fiji time. Hawaii is beaches are meant to be paradise, I've seen a lot better. The surf looks amazing though, shame I'm not good at it. ... read more

Today was the last day of our trip. It was sad, but yet, I felt like we accomplished a lot; and we did! We left the place were staying at 7:00a.m. From Zakopane to Ostrava, it’s a three and a half hour drive, so we arrived at the airport at around 10:30. We waited for our flight which was scheduled to leave at 12:15p.m. When they announced that our plane was ready to board, we stood in line and soon enough, we were back on the plane. It felt like we were just on the plane coming here to Czech Republic. Our trip seemed like it flew by. The beginning of the plane ride was quiet, I think we were just thinking about the trip and how much we learned and how we didn’t really want ... read more

I can still feel the adrenaline, that pure anticipation….eagerness, to start the trip of a lifetime. We took a flight out from Hilo to Honolulu, and when I say “WE,” I mean Abby and I. It was pretty cool because we got to fly for free. “Why?” You’d ask. Well, my sister works for the airline that we took, so she gave us “Buddy Passes.” They’re plane passes that are given to the workers, so that they can use it for travel or they can give them to whoever they choose. So, we got to fly for free! We had to wake up really early this morning because our flight that goes to Ostrava, was scheduled to leave at 7:20a.m. We checked into our airline, which is British Airways. Soon enough, we were on the plane. ... read more

Look at the pretty pretty drinky! North America » United States » Hawaii » Oahu » Honolulu By luckytravelgirlFebruary 13th 2007Kristin B. Yesterday, after Jerry finally got back from Camp Smith, we decided to drive the North Shore. So we hopped in the convertible, put the top down, and took off. Yes, we drove around almost the entire island of O'ahu. In the evening, we headed down to Barber's Point for a luau. One tequlia sunrise, two blue Hawaii's, and three mai tai's later... read more

Well, I promised pictures, didn't I? Today is my day to sleep in, so I got up around 9, and I've been resizing photos while I wait for someone to get back from running a military errand. Then we go to the mall! YAY! So here we go! Our first stop was the USS Arizona Memorial. We drove over, got our tickets, and had to wait a little over an hour for our tour to begin. So we wandered around and took some pictures. We ended up heading out to the memorial around 10:30. When we got back we took a quick tour of the Bowfin, then took the bus over to Ford Island to see the USS Missouri. We took the bus back to our car, put the top down, then drove back over ... read more
