sunburn has healed and the boat has arrived! flipping fantastic!!! i got the call three days ago that the ship was passing diamond head crater... just southeast from waikiki... i looked out my window of the hotel room and there it was... my home to be... running parallel with the shore. i greeted my boat-mates proper... fresh leihs and bottles of wine in tow. surprisingly, they seemed rather refreshed and relaxed for spending the last 17 days at sea. after the initial greeting, rounds of beer were bought, and a seafood dinner served. i will be traveling with ian the skipper and his daughter, krysia. a delighful pair who have graciously taken me in. i moved on board two days ago and have greatly enjoyed their company. life on board will be easier than a originally ... read more

I'm just testing this site out, I'm not even close to departure. I'm starting to feel very type A; I have nearly a month and a half before I fly out of my home country over the pond, and I've pretty much planned out every last detail. I've even printed out train schedules and timetables from points A through D. It's funny, every time I take that personality test, I show up type B, but only by a point or two. But how accurate are those tests anyway? The majority of my trip's planning has been through helpx.net (and craigslist...) and after viewing some ads for wanted companions, I realize how unlike the traditional free-spirit, backpack-through-Europe, go-wherever-the-wind-takes-me kind of person normally embarks on this sort of journey. Most of the generous helpx homes that agreed to ... read more

This entry is more of a supplement to the last one. Since we left out important events like 4th July and visit to the sea life park. 4th July The day started pretty late so we missed the parade in the morning, but everywhere we go, one can taste the strong sense of American patriotism. Of course we did our bit of support as well... all attempted to wear white, red or blue. Even Tim was wearing his stripy blue shirt (although he will deny it and say it's pure coincidence). The highlight of the day was picnic by the kailua beach, which is about 10 min walking distance from our accommodation, to watch the fireworks. Although we were all in high spirits, the weather let us down for the first time with it's ferocious wind. ... read more

Seems like in the past few years, festivals of all types have been dominating the Honolulu Calendar Activities. Basically it was just those of certain ethnic groups who settled in Hawaii during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, along with the indigenous Native Hawaiians who celebrated Kamehameha Day and Aloha Week. The Chinese of course with their Chinese New Years, Japanese with their Cherry Blossom Festival and O-Bon Dances during the Summer. Some celebrated quietly among their own ethnic groups but recently have made their festivals more public and welcoming to outsiders. Even small ethnic groups that may make up less than 5% of the population started celebrating in public venues and opening it to the public. Of course it didn’t hurt to have booths selling their unique cuisine or handicrafts. Among them are the Thais, ... read more

Our flight from Sydney to Honolulu was quite eventful, as flights go. To start with, we had some problems checking in to the flight, because we did not have a booking for a hotel in Hawaii, so telling the lady 'we don´t know... we will find something when we get there...' did not wash! We had to pretend to make a booking on the phone at some place and give her that address. The actual flight was very different to any other, since we were crossing the date line! This meant that we left Sydney on the 4th of July at 7:45pm, and arrived at Honolulu on the same day at 9:30am... travelling back in time! (and this was a 9 hour flight). Honolulu We arrived in Honolulu without any problems, and the views from the ... read more

The long awaited (+ much talked about)trip to Hawaii. Part 1. I have to say the plane flight of 8 hrs from Tokyo was a surprise - you forget how far away from everywhere these islands are ! But the descent over Oahu was awesome, big volcanoes and beautiful coast with sandy beaches and clear water - what else can I say ! The trip through airport security was 'tight' and obviously a British guy with 2 young kids - an obvious and huge terrorist threat (Yuki was fine with her Japanese passport - how unfair), so we were subjected to a lengthy second security check, which included shoes (again) and a complete bag check and tamp down - I was worried, would they find the anti-american propoganda on my laptop (a copy of 'Team America- ... read more

After the briefest of stays in Australia we are back on another night flight to Hawaii, Honolulu to be more precise. Unbelievably we set off at 5.50pm, fly for 9 hours and arrive at 7am on the same day, this has to be our longest day ever. We are only on the Island for 3 days and don’t really want to waste any of our time, plus we are unable to book into our room until 3pm. We rent a jeep at the airport and make our way to Waikiki Beach where we are staying and after a quick stop to check in our bags we head off to the North Shore of the Island to see the huge waves and hopefully watch some serious big wave surfing. The drive up to the North is once ... read more
