Aloha! This is a lil blog i am doing as i leave the island of Oahu! I have spent so much time here its going to be shocking to leave. I spent this last day furiously packing the remainder of my stuffs and shoving it into suitcases. After a sad goodbye to Nathaniel this am as he left for work, I continued to pack up the remainder of what was my life here. Took some time and met up with Gayle for one iced mocha to start the day. We got to spend some time chatting over coffee. 1130 I leave my condo for the airport. Of course there is choke traffic in Ewa from all the construction that is going on, on Fort Weaver and on Geiger. I make it to the airport and check ... read more

We flew into spectacular Honalulu and spent 3 fabulous days being hosted by Yoni. His place was in the heart of Waikiki and just minutes walk to all the beaches. The downtown area was beautiful and the beaches were what postcards were made of. After a strenuous hike up through old military tunnels, bunkers and steep staircases we reached the summit of Diamond Head (which is dormant volcano.) The reward was a stunning view of Waikiki, downtown Honalulu and an aerial view of the reef extending into the turquoise coloured ocean. Any trip to Hawaii would not be complete without learning to surf. We did this on Waikiki beach and it was the first time Hayley or I had ever successfully surfed in our lives, albeit ungracefully. We also took the time out to visit the ... read more

The 14th of May would turn out to be, quite literally the longest day of our lives. Our flight from Sydney to Honolulu would cover some 5081 miles and take 9 hours and 20 minutes. That part is all very simple, but crossing the International Date Line whilst in the air meant that although we would be leaving Sydney in the evening at 7:45pm, we would be arriving at 9:30 in the morning of the same day!! Basically we would board nine hours ahead of British Summer Time and disembark eleven hours behind; that’s a 44 hour day - Garvan, you could have stretched your birthday out even further than normal. We arrived in Honolulu, which has one of those names that (like the Bahamas and Bora Bora) conjures up a vision of paradise, and caught ... read more

El diez de Mayo, no special holiday, as far as I know. Just the day the Local Filipino Community in Hawaii happened to pick for their Annual Fiesta in the Park. The Parade started at ungodly hour of 8AM. Sorry don’t have any photos for you on this event. When I finally arrived at the Park, a Escrima or Kali demo was going on with guys in Kendo Armor battling each other with a pair of sticks each. Latter came performances, that seemed Catholic in nature, resembling scenes from Mexican movies of villagers honoring Jesus or Mary. Next were performances that seem Moro or Muslim in nature, combined with Spanish colonial type ballroom dance. As most Culture events seem to have their audience participation portion, where for comedy relief or other reasons, such the Koreans with ... read more
