(Just a reminder that you can enlarge photos by clicking on them and comments at the bottom are always appreciated) It was another gorgeous day Sunday, so we decided to drive over to the other side of the island near Wailuku to visit the Ioa Valley Monument. It's a very beautiful, lush valley surrounded by tall mountains in the rainforest part of Maui, which is the opposite side of the island from Lahaina. Inside the valley is the rock formation known as the Iao Needle. The native Hawaiians thought it was the phallic symbol of the God of the Sea, Kanaloa. This was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai waged between the invading King Kamehameha forces from Oahu and the Maui forces of King Kehekili. The battle was so horrible that they said the dead ... read more

I didn't really have too much of a great sleep, I don't know if this was because I'd slept quite well on the last flight or that the light outside our room was quite bright, plus the bed was by the window and there were all sorts of noises going on. I usually hate noise keeping me awake, but it was quite nice to hear all the different sounds of the birds chirping and even the cockerels when they started at 0430! Daryl thankfully had a good sleep and joined me in the land of living at about 7ish. I really wanted to go to the airport to collect our bags, but as Daryl reminded me, just because they arrived on the 6 am flight, didn't mean we could have them ASAP, as the airline desk ... read more

Aloha family and friends! After roughly 28 hours total travelling we feel like we have travelled to the ends of the earth, but finally we are here in Hawaii. We checked in ok at Heathrow, and lucky for us, sorted all our baggage labels in London so we didn't have to check in each time on the stopovers. Daryl was asleep before the plane even taxied to the runway, and we managed to have a nice flight to our first stop in Chicago. Immigration here was a nightmare, and with less than 2 hours to our connection to LA it was pushing it. We used the automated machines for photos fingerprints etc only to queue up to have it all done again at the desk. Daryl was ahead of me and gave me a wave as ... read more

Alpha! Friday 28th September – Waikiki to Maui continued… We were up early to finish packing, grab breakfast (love the free croissants and muffins!) and check out before heading back to the airport for our flight to Maui. We got a taxi to the airport and there was a bit of trouble at check in because the system didn’t prompt us to pay to check in our bags… that’s no real problem! It helped make it easier for the airline who’d got a bit confused when I said we needed to pay for our bags separately. We went through to the departure lounge and had a drink in the bar before our flight with Go/Mesa. I was expecting the plane to be smaller than it was so was pleasantly surprised (the bigger the plane the less ... read more

Well today was the first of the free tours were were able to attend while staying at the Banana Bungalow Hostel. Jordan opted out of the tour. He hadn't slept very well. Not surprising. The mattress he was given was wafer thin, it must have been like sleeping on the floor. So he stayed back which was sort of a bonus as we really want to go on the tour tomorrow and as you aren't alllowed to sign up for the next days' tour till after the current one has left, we got a jump on the others and a guaranteed spot. But enf about tomorrow let's talk about today. Today we met our tour guides - Nadine and Henry. They do these tours on a daily basis 7 days a week along with one or ... read more

Its' moving day!! I do have to apologise for the delay in getting the blog up. There have been issues between the blog, tablet and the internet that have made it somewhat difficult to persist at times. So scoffed down most of whatever we had left of our food. Wasn't till later that I realised we had left a bunch of fruit in the bottom of the fridge despite having looked in there several times :S Oh well We had several hours to kill. So we headed to the nearest laundromat to wash all our gear We had pretty much stuck to the same outfits all week and they were in desparate need of cleaning. Took around $10 I guess for 3 loads so it wasn't too bad I guess. By the time we were done ... read more

And I Thought WakeUp! Was Crazy I woke up at 7:30AM, jumped on a shuttle and was back out at the airport by 8:30. I had a 10:40AM flight for Maui and my bag was due in on a Qantas flight from Sydney at 9:30AM. I checked in for my flight with Hawaiian Air and the lady told me that once I collected my bag I could jump the queue and put it on the flight for Maui. I headed over to the international terminal, had a coffee at Starbuck's (I was determined not to but there was nowhere else, plus I'm in America, it's part of their culture right?) and then had a brief chat to the guy at the JetStar desk. Basically he told me to wait until 10AM and if my bags hadn't ... read more
