Writing two days today. Too tired to write last night. Wind and sun will really take it out of you. Yesterday we were really busy. Jeanne and Larry left here at 0 dark thirty to get Jeanne to the start. Onshore wind was gone for the swim, so the sea was calm. Yesterday when we dropped off her bike the ocean was really choppy. I did not get to see her do the swim or bike, her friend Susan brought me out to the Fairmont Orchid about halfway through her run. We found some shade on the golf course and watched her complete her first lap and begin second lap through what the runners call either Hell's Kitchen or The Death March. Part of the 13 mile run, It is a three mile section, done twice ... read more

Today was very interesting. Jeanne was having a take care of yourself before the big event day. The day started with her getting a Vit B infusion. Then she went for a massage while I visited the Safeway store. Finally she went for a whole body Cryotherapy session. I had never heard about it before, but think I am going to try it before I leave. The person getting the treatment puts on a robe, warm glove, knee socks and rubber slip on shoes. Then the doctor cools down this tall cylinder and you get in. The door is closed and an elevator lifts you until only your head sticks out the Top. You throw out your robe and for between a minute and a half and three minutes you turn in quarter turns every fifteen ... read more

i have arrived, yippee! Great flights on Hawaiian Airlines. I must have been booked on a newer plane, seating very different from last time. Felt like I was in a science fiction transport. From the rear, the seats looked like the back of some amusement park ride. Three rows across, three deep, with two seats in each curved seat. Picture looking at nine sets of white ultramodern curved walls, only they are only four feet high. As you come around to the front, there are two seats to your left facing a grey plastic magazine and safety card rack at the top, with storage below. The seats are leather and modern and the leg rest is to the left or right of the seat and approximately two feet away. Does not sound very comfortable, does it, ... read more

Hi everyone from Gerri's house in MD. Heading back to Jeanne's in less than a week. First time back on the Big Island in a few years. Just wanted to let you all know I will be blogging again. In the meantime, I am enjoying time with Gerri, Jim, Andy and Rebecca Andy will be a senior next year, Rebecca graduates from middle school in June. Weather here has been strange since I arrived. Do not think global warming is the problem, I seem to have attracted an ongoing cold front. Later all.... read more

Hilo 29th March Hilo The Big Island, Hawaii - where there are two active volcanoes and Captain Cook was killed in Kealakekua Bay in 1779. Other interesting facts about the island is that it has 13 major climatic zones from tropical rain forests to snow capped mountains and the ukulele is a favourite musical instrument (bizarre)!!! Hilo is the capital and gateway to the Hawaiin Volcanoes National Park. The park was created a World Heritage Site in 1987 and has two active volcanoes. Maunganui Loa (13677 ft) and Kilauea (4078 ft), the latter being the more active and volatile. Kilauea has been erupting continuously since for the last 20 years and lava buried the village of Kalapana in 1990, the crater is called ' The House of Everlasting Fire'. We took a Highlights tour to give ... read more

The big island is home to 8 of the worlds 13 climate zones. On the drive from Hilo to Kona this becomes evident. As Hilo is one of the wettest cities in the US, it is green and lush. Drive up to 3500 feet in elevation to Volcano town then down the other side with Mauna Loa at your side. Along the way passing once again changing scenery and this time even including a little desert. The rains subsided, the sun came out, the scenery became green and lush once again. South of Kona offered grand views of the coast below, lush tropical forest and warm weather as the Kona side is drier and warmer. This was a nice change from the 3 days of rain we had experienced. Another wonderful drive of ever-changing landscapes. Driving ... read more

Been awhile since Court and I have been abroad. So our time was due. We agreed upon Hawaii months ago, mainly for the long list of landscapes, fantastic natural sights and pleasant weather. I purposely will not use the word vacation at any point of this blog as a lot of this trip never felt vacation-like. The travels began by sitting in an Air Canada plane on the tarmac for an hour only to be delivered back to the terminal. A 7 hour wait, rerouted to Toronto then arriving in Vancouver 30 minutes after our original Honolulu flight departed. 23 and 1/2 hours later in Vancouver (we did get a hotel) we boarded our flight to Honolulu. Arrived around 11 pm local time and spent a few hours at the airport as our flight to the ... read more

Everyone hears about what life is like on a cruise ship. You know--the food, bingo, bars, dancing, staterooms---but for us one of the most important aspects of cruising is the constant interaction with nature. The oceans, winds, stars and moons, sunrises, sunsets, currents, constellations, towering waves and glass flat water, storms, water spouts, green flashes, glaciers. And then there is the sea life: whales, dolphins, sharks, manatees, turtles, flying fish, jellyfish, baitfish, penguins, seagulls, frigates, albatross, gulls, terns. All that while at sea and then when going ashore seeing the unique flora and fauna of each country or island visited. We have been fortunate to see the most exotic animals and birdlife around the globe. Mountains and rivers, volcanoes and fjords, rice paddies and forests, swamps and deserts all are accessible by ship. Such are the ... read more

Today was our last day in Hawaii but with our flight home not leaving until just before midnight, we pretty much had a full day to do whatever we wanted. We started this trip by snorkeling so we decided to end it by snorkeling. Lisa knew of a nearby spot that she had snorkeled before so we made our way over to Kahaluu Beach Park just south of Kailua Kona. First thing we notice here was that it was really crowded. However, we staked out a spot on the sand, put on our fins and mask and got into the water. I was not expecting much as far as the quality of the snorkeling but I was quickly shown to be wrong. The reef was teeming with a huge diversity of fish and other sea life ... read more

Today was going to be a full day of driving with the goal of heading as far as Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Driving down Highway 11 towards the southern end of the Big Island, we made our first stop along the side of the highway in Naalehu to stretch our legs and enjoy the views. After the quick break, it was a short drive to the most famous black sand beach on the island, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. Created by the erosion of volcanic rock, the first thing you notice about the black sand is that it is very hot to walk on. Like most sandy beaches, I thought it would be easier to walk barefoot but I quickly had to put the flip-flops back on. We walked over to where a crowd had formed to ... read more
