As we were driving to another wonderful snorkeling spot, David exclaimed, "I haven't worn socks for a week!" After living through one of the coldest winters in 30 years, going without socks for a week is worth mentioning. Not only, have we not worn socks for a week, we haven't worn pants, or sweaters, or parkas, or mitts, or ... life is just easier. We've been in Hawaii for over a week and this is my first post. There is so much I could write, but where to start? How about the weather? Well, the first day was a little overcast, but warm, the next day was sunny and warm (between 78 & 84 degrees Fahrenheit -- I can't even think in Celsius anymore), the next day was sunny and warm, the next day was ... ... read more

Kilauea is one of the largest active volcanoes in the world, but like Hawaii, it's laid-back (most of the time). Most active volcanoes are not something you drive to and spend a day exploring - you usually get out of their way! But not this volcano -- first, we spent some time hiking around the crater, and in the evening had a lovely dinner at the Volcano House Restaurant with a great view of the volcano. Then, as evening fell, we watched as the smoke plume turned from white to pink and eventually red. For the final event, we left the restaurant and drove closer to have a look into the "belly of the beast" -- the lava lake in the centre of the crater! On the way to Kilauea, we stopped at the end of the ... read more

I love snorkeling! I'm not a great swimmer (well, not even good), but the ocean is so different than the cold, freshwater lakes I swam in as a child. The salt water holds you up and with goggles and a pair of flippers -- it's swimmer's heaven! I'm always a little hesitant when I first get in the water, but the minute I put my head under, the world becomes a quieter place. If I had to describe the perfect place to meditate, it would be swimming in a warm ocean with schools of colorful fish all around. You hear your breath go in and out, while you glide along effortlessly as the sea rocks you gently back and forth. Time stands still and all seems right with the universe. David and both sons are excellent ... read more

Well we haven't had a lot of luck with the iPad but I'll have another go at some communication. Our trip to the other side of the island got pretty much washed out but we managed to spend 2 days in the Bali tree house. Loudest frogs and jungle creatures we ever did hear... Visited volcano and did a couple of major hikes. Had a great breakfast at ken's pancake house in Hilo and then headed around the north side of the island and back to captain cook. Are staying our last 2nights in the historic manago hotel. Went snorkelling again today. Quite high surf and rough going but managed only a few abrasions. Saw lots of beautiful fish, a big turtle and also a big whale breaching. Did a lot of lava walking & got ... read more

We have pretty much given up on this blog cause half the time idoes want seems to upload what we send, but this morning fueled with good Kona coffee we are trying again. Three years ago I took a picture of a beach at the northernmost point that I promised myself I'd hike down to next time I came so that was our destination yesterday. We drove there exploring a few places along the way and got there just after noon. The hike down was a bit of a goat trail but well worth it! Gorgeous silky dark sand and big waves and hardly any people! Got a rather worried and reluctant Joni to come and play in the waves and once she did she was hooked and we frolicked for a few hours! We finally ... read more

I stayed in Kona for 4 days, and it was great. Kona is the ritzier, more developed, more touristic part of the Big Island of Hawaii. A lot of older American folks are there enjoying vacations, a quarter or half the year, retirement, or have permanently relocated. All are basically here to enjoy life by unwinding, soaking up the great weather, natural environment, and friendly people (funny how these often go together!). It's not exactly a landmark destination for a backpacker, as there aren't many fellow backpackers there, most being priced out of this market. Fortunately, I had my own crew, assembled from the Vipassana meditation retreat that I started my Hawaiian experience with. One was kind enough to host us all in the condo that she had access to. We made the most of it. ... read more

To borrow a phrase from my Dad: You can't make this shit up. A series of 3 chance encounters has lead to me sitting in a condo loaned by the owner to a friend of a friend whom I met shortly after arriving to the Big Island, about to imbibe an ayahuasca brew made by a Punatic calling himself Kolomana, claiming to have been trained by Terence McKenna, with the ceremony being lead by someone who had spent substantial time in many ayahuasca ceremonies in the jungles of Peru, where the shamans have been administering this "medicine" for generations. Ayahuasca was something I had only heard a bit about before coming to Big Island of Hawaii, but it kept coming up in conversations here, as it's become pretty popular locally, and the url=../../North-America/United-States/Hawaii/Bi... read more

Hawaii, or I should say the Puna region of the Big Island, has been blowing my mind. I used to think that the heart of American counter culture was somewhere in the San Francisco Bay area. But now I'm beginning to think that it's actually out here in Puna. The locals aptly call themselves "Punatics." Every conversation I have with a stranger here quickly veers off into deep waters of ayurveda, ayahuasca, how to sync your vibrations with those of the Earth, or better yet, the universe, sustainable permaculture, the importance of blessing one's food, how quantum mechanics gives rise to consciousness, the finer points of astrology - I'm sure you get the idea ;) Disapointingly, there doesn't seem to be much awareness of bitcoin here. I'm doing my best to remedy that ;) At the ... read more

I lived like a monk for 10 days. Actually, the lifestyle was probably more restrictive than that of a monk, in that nearly all the day (10.5 hrs) was scheduled as sitting meditation, and talking was forbidden. Here's the schedule: 4 - wakeup bell 4:30-6:30 - Meditate 6:30-7:15 - Breakfast 7:15-8:00 - Leisure 8-9 - Group meditation 9-11 - Meditation 11-11:45 Lunch 12-1 - Questions for the teacher, if you have any 1-2:30 - Meditate 2:30-3:30 - Group Meditation 3:30-5:00 - Meditate 5-6 - Dinner/Tea 6-7 - Group Meditation 7-8:15 - Discourse by Goenka 8:30-9 - Group Meditation 9-9:30 - Questions for the assistant teacher 10:00 - Lights out Even though I knew the schedule going in, it was experientially more demanding than I was anticipating. The night before our arrival in Hilo, we were awakened by a thunder clap so loud that it was startling. The lightning light show that followed filled the sky. Fortunately that storm stayed off shore as we had a relatively dry day in port. Hilo is known for its vast amounts of rain and that contributes to its lush beauty. Hilo was a supply stop for us. Everything we forgot or extra stuff that we would need can be found here. Even though it was Sunday, all the big box stores were open, but the small local shops and museums were closed. But the first priority was to watch the San Francisco 49ers playoff game against Carolina. Since it wasn’t being aired on the ship we took the free shuttle bus to (gasp!) Walmart thinking that ... read more
