It was an early start as we were heading over to Tybee Island to explore that area today. We got to the kayak place pretty early, I think we were one of the first cars there. We just stood chilling outside until everyone was there and it was time to get sorted with our kayaks. After a short introductory walk we were kitted out with what we needed and piled into their van. It was a short drive to the place where we would begin our kayaking. hr tour lasted for about three hours and was really fun. When we first left we headed out into the sea and the water was a bit rough. I was a million miles away from the rest of the group and drifting in the wrong direction. One of the ... read more

Interesting day on the ditch. Left Kilkenny Creek near Richmond Hill, Ga. We stayed there for two days waiting out weather. Left this morning at 7:00. For some reason my wind meter which hasn't worked for three years decided to work. It read 29 knots going through St Catherines Sound.Thewind blew pretty much 20 to 25 all day. Kept blowing my hat off. Very irritating. We ran aground in the Little Mud River. Four feet in the middle of the channel. Another sail boat ran aground on the right side of the channel. The wind blew me off the bottom just as a trawler went through on the left side of the channel and gave us a reading of six feet. Lucked out again and both of us sailboats followed him through. We keep running into ... read more

Fresh from a week of seminars and posters, colleagues and friends, shrimp on river boats and shrimp in local restaurants, my visit to Savannah last year ended with a short excursion to the Atlantic Coast. In all ways you can imagine, I needed some fresh air. I like talking about meteorology as much as the next of a seemingly infinite number of guys and gals, but there is life outside of work. There is a whole world outside the windows of a confining hotel with mysterious thermostat problems. My friend Somer, her massive pickup truck (which could be easily confused with a tank), and I decided to ride (plow, run over) US 80 to Tybee Island. On the way, we saw beautiful trees, marshes, and tall grasses signaling the transition from land habitat to sea habitat. ... read more

Friday, April 20th, 2007 - Rincon and Savannah, Georgia: Earth Day Today is one of America’s significant days for two main reasons. One, it is the official World’s Earth Day, the day when everybody ought to plan something ‘green’ for supporting our earth’s collapsed lungs. However, it was merely a suggestion, a more symbolic task than a functional one, and it wasn’t a surprise that I couldn’t find anyone here planting anything, even for a flower, showing our society’s honest attitude towards our lovely earth. Two, it is the Remembrance Day for thirty-two victims (and one shooter?) in Virginia Tech’s shooting four days ago, and Americans are more responsive in this subject by showing the school’s colors of maroon and orange in their clothing. Kick’s Country radio conducted a couple minutes of silence at noon which ... read more

Since myself and Chris had plans to see Savannah for the day, we also decided to see the Lighthouse as well. It was an additional 30 minute drive, but was nice to have another area to see since we were already looking at a daytrip involving 4+ hours of driving each way. (We later decided this wasn't the smartest of day trip decisions.) The lighthouse is set back from the beach, where suprisingly, many were sunbathing this day. I had only been to the area once, when I was in 8th grade, and my memory just held a cold windy day - not one fully of warmth and sunshine like this new day provided. A structure sits between the lighthouse and the ocean, it's an old fort, with a portion of it currently used as a ... read more
