We joined in celebrating the Year of the Horse with the annual Dragon Parade in Orlando, Florida. Last year it took place on Sunday, February 9th. Actually, it was a full week after the Lunar New Year, (commonly called Chinese New Year) I think, due to commercial interests. The parade was scheduled to start at 11 am with the various contingents and dancers in colorful costumes walking along the length of Hillcrest Street near downtown Orlando. We arrived there early to get good vantage points to watch the parade and take photos. As the most popular festival in Asian/Oriental culture, Lunar New Year is celebrated internationally in Asian countries, and also in Asian communities around the world. I was told that in Florida, the Dragon Parade is the only large-scale celebration for Lunar New Year, so ... read more

This list was made up recently and it is my own personal opinion. I am certain many of the Travel Blog members on here have perhaps, seen more breathtaking views than I have. If so, please post them here. I would be very interested to know what other spectacular sights other people have seen, and would like to share with all of us. I should mention too that this list is shown in alphabetical order according to the name of the city (in capital letters) where the sight is located. For example, number 1 is not necessarily my favorite place. ALL of them are my favorites! 1. Saint Nazaire cathedral, from the Orb River in BEZIERS, France. 2. Mont Blanc and the Alps, from a street in COURMAYEUR, Italy. 3. The Arabian Sea with coconut trees ... read more

The one about quality time with (part of) the family The reason I left NC so early this year was due in part to being able to join up with some of the family for a few days at Disney World. Kristine and Lou along with Maggie and Hudson left Park City, UT for a month long whirlwind tour of the east coast for the holidays. They spent time in NJ, then Christmas with me and Tim and his family in NC, and travelled to Charleston to see Maggie’s grandparents then on to Lou’s family in Fort Lauderdale for New Years. The final leg of their trip was 3 nights at WDW. The main campground I spend time at is in Orlando, so it was a no brainer for me to meet up with them. Remember ... read more

After all the crazy travelling, the constant moving from place to place and dragging our suitcases behind us we have had 2 weeks of permanent down-time in sunny Orlando. It's 1123 miles from Austin to Orlando and we had a fairly peaceful and uneventful flight. Graham was still smiling from his brief meeting with Lewis Hamilton and we arrived late and sleepy at our hotel. We have really enjoyed it here in Florida and have had a lot of fun. It's been nice not to have had to consider updating the blog for a while as we knew we were going to summarise our time here and talk about the places we've been as opposed to create a daily log of our adventures so as a change to our normal programming we are going to finish ... read more

The next morning we were able to sleep in and decided to drive to the studios rather than take the buses again. Our first fast pass was at Star Tours. I wondered if the boys would like this as each of them had found things that surprised me to scare them (Pirate makeover, disney characters, tiki birds). With Emry's head barely scraping the height restriction, we all enjoyed the ride! Then we came out and decided to take them to Muppets 3D, something our whole family used to love. G really does not like shows until about halfway through, then he either loves them or hates them. Fortunately, he loved this one. When we came out, it was pouring, pouring rain. The whole exit ramp was packed with people and when it seemed like we would ... read more

The next morning, I woke the boys early and we headed back to the campground to get ready for our first theme park: Magic Kingdom! Once back at the camper, we collected Mom and Dad and went to wait for the boat ride. The boys loved the boat ride (I think it was one of their favorite rides of the day). We got there early, right as they were opening the gates, so there was a gazillion people waiting. One of the changes in the last 15 years? 9/11. Everyone with a bag had to go through security first. But with the magic bands, it was pretty easy to walk through the entrance after. I wore the boys bands on my right hand and mine on the left - the whole trip I was referred to ... read more

In late July 2014, we were able to take a last minute trip to Florida and one of the goals was to see how inexpensively we could have 6 nights / 7 days in the "Sunshine State." Of course the question of whether to drive or fly was the first thing to be decided. We were able to find flights from Columbus, Ohio to Orlando for about $270 each R/T which turned out to be a really great move. Flying gave us more vacation time and less drive time. It was also the first time we had flown Southwest Airlines which proved to work-out just fine. That's the first part of "cheap". Next is where to stay and I had a credit on my account for $195.00 from the Marriott Vacation Club from an earlier trip ... read more

I left my friends early the next morning while they left for work. Following their advice, I had planned to visit the Santa Fe College zoo and see some gators, but the drive there was high traffic flow due to classes starting. So, I next decided to try to find the State Geological Park, where there is a giant sinkhole I guess. However, it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and with the gate shut, there was little to do. So, I visited Walgreens for some munchies before making my way to Orlando. Since I had time to kill, I took the back road - the land between Gainesville and Ocala is beautiful with Spanish Moss and dozens of horse ranches. After hitting Ocala, I decided to get back on the freeway. Then it was pretty ... read more
