In Disney World lingo, "rope drop" is when you arrive at a park before opening. People do this to walk right onto a popular ride when the park opens and to go on other attractions while crowds are fairly low. Normally, rope-dropping doesn't interest me much, but I feel much differently during the pandemic. I wanted to prioritize getting on indoor rides early in the day before there was much wait, and that's exactly what we were able to do! Magic Kingdom was scheduled to open at 8am. I read that the best way to rope drop is to be at your bus station 90 minutes early. Joanna and I got there right at 6:33. Disney isn't filling buses to capacity right now, which is nice, but it means you wait longer for buses. We didn't ... read more

Disney World offers such fabulous resorts. We've learned to always plan a "resort day" when we go to Disney World. This is a day where we get to recover a bit from all the walking (I hit over 28,000 steps yesterday!), and we can also enjoy our resort amenities. For Joanna, this meant we did a lot of swimming today! We're staying in the Little Mermaid rooms at Art of Animation, and this section has its own pool. It's smaller than The Big Blue Pool in the center of the resort. We've spent time swimming in the Little Mermaid pool already, so, this morning, after breakfast, we decided to check out The Big Blue Pool. It has a zero entry side, so it's probably a good choice for families with little kids. It also has a ... read more

This morning, Joanna and I were up early. We mobile ordered breakfast at our resort. I thought we'd pick it up and bring it to our room, but it's quite the hike from our room in the Little Mermaid section to the main building at Art of Animation. So, when we arrived, we opted to eat there rather than carry a tray of food all the way back. There are tables set up outside, so it's really a nice and safe place to eat. As we ate, a squirrel came right up to us. Joanna was thrilled, but I was trying to scare it away. It took a long time to be deterred! Later, a bird flew right up to us and landed on the back of my chair. I jumped in surprise, and a woman ... read more

In January 2020, just before the pandemic hit, my friends and I began planning a girls' weekend at Disney World for October. It was going to be us and our daughters. I was so excited for that trip, but then came COVID-19.... ...No one knew how long the pandemic would last. So, we kept our trip booked until the last day for almost-free cancelations. Disney allows people to cancel up to 30 days before a trip, and you get a full refund on your room or package. Unfortunately, we didn't purchase a package. We bought our tickets separately, and those were non-refundable. Disney extended the expiration date by nearly a year, and our tickets are set to expire in September 2021. I've since rebooked the trip a few times, but I always chickened out and canceled. ... read more

Two things brought me back to Orlando for the third time in the past year: the color pink, and the chance to see what’s been called “America’s Team” in person. On top of that, I got to try some off-brand KFC that punished my body the next day, so that’s exciting. As with my previous two trips to the area, I didn’t do a lot of sightseeing. Disney and theme parks aren’t my thing, even when there’s not a pandemic going on. Still, it’s hard to escape the tourist-dependent landscape of central Florida, even when you’re not here for touristy purposes. While college football bowl games are normally a massive haul for tourism, 2020 has taken its toll on all of that. Unlike my previous bowl game in Montgomery, I couldn’t buy just a single ticket ... read more

Central Florida—land of palm trees, cool breezes, and 5 short rainstorms every afternoon. Also home to the most theme parks in the world. On Saturday, I saw several palm trees, enjoyed the cool breezes, and only endured 2 of those rainstorms. And my faithful readers will be happy to know that I successfully avoided all the theme parks. In these Covid times, only one thing gets me to travel: college football. Yeah, I know I’m weird. But as long as it’s outdoors, and I’ve got my mask, and other people are being at least somewhat responsible with distancing and mask-wearing, I don’t feel too bad. But boy, has the 2020 college football season been weird. Tell me something I don’t know, right? All the prognosticators are saying that if a team from a lower conference has ... read more

This was an odd experience, since the game itself was fantastic, but everything surrounding it was a bit lackluster (and even downright frustrating). First off, let me say that I was excited I would get to attend a second game involving Notre Dame in which none of my loyalties would be questioned. Also, I could attend a game for a reasonable price. When the matchup was announced in early December, I was also thrilled that it would be in a location relatively close to home. I contemplated making it an overnight trip, especially since the kickoff time was set at noon. But with the money situation, the decision to do a day trip to Orlando was much more palatable. Wake up around 5:00, leave before 6:00, and then be back home in time to watch some ... read more

We have been a bit too busy to blog so will summarise it here.... Day 4, lots of shopping. Daddy went nuts and brought heaps. It was like mummy and daddy had switched bodies. I also got some cool new shoes, BB9, a lightsaber and got to have yummy chicken nuggets twice. At night Aunty Tarn and I went to Disney Springs and I found a shop that has a cup cake atm outside. Put the money in and get your choice of cupcake back. Awesome!! Day 5, Halloween party at Magic Kingdom. The most people I have seen in my life. I dressed up as Pac-Man and mum, dad and Aunty tarns as ghosts. We got ridiculous amounts of candy. While most people were busy watching the parade, daddy and I went and did splash ... read more

It was cool, but kinda scary. At the top you see the track was broken. Then it went backwards. The most terrifying part was rushing backwards really quickly. It was dark and you didn’t know where you were going. There was a big forward drop and that was pretty fun. Really wanted to get back on it but the queue was a bit big and we had to go for breakfast (don’t have food before doing this ride)... read more

Today we went on a ride called dinosaur and it was amazing. On the ride you can see dinosaurs like carnotaurus and they appear to come right at you. For me this the most terrifying ride in animal kingdom. And yes, I went on it again straight away. ... read more
