We finally pulled up anchor and headed a little further south to Peck Lake (Hobe Sound area). It was a nice motored cruise down the river. A beautiful day on the waterway! We arrived at the anchorage to find some friends of ours anchored there. We settled in and I dropped the kayak in the water. This anchorage is a very popular place for locals to come as they can beach their boats and have a short walk to the ocean. This makes for a very wavy anchorage (that, and it's very close to the channel where boats are constantly speeding by on the weekends). My kayak trip was nice. I got back into an area where it was nice and quiet. Later that afternoon, we dropped the dinghy in the water and headed to a ... read more

Happy birthday Oscar Oscar turned 14 today and he is as spray as ever. He is enjoying his camping experiences and has finally found his manners. We have a peaceful and contented campsite. Today I had a leisurely morning, visiting on the phone, walking Oscar and getting ready for the beach. It was a beach day! Finally got to the beach about 12:30 and stayed til 3:30 enjoying the sea air, warm temps and stronger breeze. There weren't many birds, they had a hard time flying with the wind, but enough went by to keep me shooting. There is now an influx of Porugese Man of War on the beaches. Not enough to keep people out of the water, but enough. I am including a picture of one that washed up on the beach. It looks ... read more

Trapper Nelson Didn't make it to sunrise this morning but Oscar and I did have a long early walk. He is feeling much better and is hungrier than ever. We didn't encounter any critters on the walk but we enjoyed the view, the smells and the beautiful breeze. We made it home in time for me to get ready to go on the 11 am tourist cruise up the Laxahatchie River. I took the cruise last year but wanted another ride on the water to enjoy the wildlife, water and scenery. There are many Osprey nests along the way, turtles sunning themselves, and we even saw 2 baby allegators trying to catch the rays. The river is high because of all the rain but it is influenced by the tide as the mouth of the river ... read more

There is not much to report except that I am safe and dry. Our area made the national news yesterday with the amount of rainfall in just a few hours. Just north of me it rained 7 to 10 inches in just a few hours. That all happened in the morning, then the serious storm came along. It just poured for hours, I couldn't imagine where the water was going. We even had a weather advisory for flooding and 60 mph wind gusts. I was about ready to strap myself in the drivers seat if the wind got any stronger. It was pleasant hearing the rain on the metal roof of the camper, so there was some napping done too. Oscar has not been feeling well for a few days and yesterday he just shivered, there ... read more

I had the windows open all night and the air was typical of the tropics, warm and moist. As I was catching up on my e mails, I heard a buzzing overhead and there was a wasp/hornet crawling around on the ceiling. He was a big sucker and I was debating to kill or get it out the door. I grabbed the dish towel and caught it but not without being stung on my pinkie. I screamed and he made it out. Now I have a sore pinkie and pussy bites on my ankle. These Fl critters and getting to me. After coffee, Oscar and I went on a nice walk then we came back to the camper and I got ready to meet Linda for lunch. Linda and I went to a resturant along the ... read more

Visiting with Linda My first morning here at Jonathan Dickinson was cool and windy. We went for a walk to the river to make sure it was still there. It is just up the road a little and Oscar enjoyed all the new smells. It was so windy that I didn't see one bird, or anything else for that matter. I came back to the camper and had breakfast and spent some time with Oscar because I was going out at 2:30 to meet my friend Linda who was in our wedding 51 years ago. So Oscar got an early dinner and I was off to West Palm Beach to Linda's house and from there we went to have a message. OH, it was just delightful! Back at the house to regroup and comb our hair ... read more

Happy Birthday Lisa. I woke before sunrise and saw a red flickering light next to my camper. That got my attention, yes, it was a fire in the campsite next to me. Controlled and confined but a pretty good fire. The fellow next to me had come in late last night and I saw him cooking on a stove on his picnic table. He had a pickup truck with an open bed and no camper or tent. Poor guy, must have been frozen. The park ranger came by last night and said there was a fire danger because of low humidity and to disconnect my hose from the spiket and let the water drip a little, it was supposed to be below 30 degrees. I got to feeling sorry for the fellow next to me and ... read more

My travel guide advised me to secure my cooler at Long Pine Key campground because of raccoons! I have learned to be wary of these critters, as they like to eat what I like to eat, so my cooler was extremely secure during my 4-night stay. Then, on my last night I attended an interpretive talk about alligators. When the topic came around to prey during the questions the ranger explained about the exotic snake problem they were having. It seems that within the last year and a half since my guidebook had been written Burmese pythons have eaten every raccoon in the parkā€¦ Then he explained about their active capture program of these exotic snakes that are raking havoc in the food chain! The morning I left the Everglades I stopped one more time ... read more

It has been a few weeks (a month maybe?) since I participated in this blog. I did not go into hiding to avoid the IRS or Immigration, I just decided to come home early and attempt to get productive. As you probably have been following Dianne and Saskia's awesome trip to Thailand and wondering where Bruce went, I will explain. I have a certain need to feel productive (ie: work) if I have been taking time off. While our trip to NZ was nothing short of awesome, it did not satisfy my need for productivity. In mid-January I came back to the states and I am currently living with my inlaws in Hobe Sound, Florida. Our plan all along was for Dianne and I to make our primary residence here. It has a couple of ... read more
