It is good to be back on the water again - after a few glitches we seem to be back in the groove of the cruising life. Our first day out (Friday 13th) we had a great sail down Charlotte Harbour doing 7 knots under just the jib with the wind picking up and the waves building. We reached the narrow dredged channel to our marina destination to discover that the engine was not pumping water (so would quickly overheat). We recalled Bill Stephenson's comment re towing insurance..."It's not IF you'll need it, it's WHEN you'll need it!" So we called TowBoat US to get us safely in. Fortunately the engine was a quick fix - no harm done! We have been working our way north, exploring new territory north of Sarasota. Yesterday we crossed Tampa ... read more

The Dutch welcome the new year in 2009 with this simple phrase which translates into "Old and New." In fact, the phrase is even pronounced in an eerily similar way to our own versions of the words. At this hectic yet calming time, a period wrought with binaries and polar opposites, I find "oude & nieuw" to be slightly more descriptive than our one-sided take: "happy new year." Yes, the reflective end-of-the-year-blog attitude is palpable, and it's just going to be one of those rides, so buckle up... Of the many ironies of the "holiday season," here are some notable gems. In a time where people pride themselves on coming together and putting aside material things for the sake of brotherhood, you will find the most people clawing to rip x-box's from each other's respective kung-fu ... read more

Our trip was nearly coming to an end, but we had one more state to visit first. Our flight home was booked to depart from Tampa, but we had a week to visit Florida beforehand, so we headed to Miami first and stopped a few days at Miami Beach. As it is now past summer a lot of the hotels have cheap deals so we managed to get a nice hotel right on Miami Beach, just a mile or so north from the Art Deco district. It turned out to be a great location, as we could enjoy some quiet relaxing on the beach but it was in walking distance from some of the restaurants and bars of South Beach. Miami Beach is every bit as stunning as it is supposed to be, and the sea ... read more

The sights over the last week or two have been fantastic. The trip through the deserts of Utah and Arizona were particularly splendid. The grand canyon, Bryce Canyon, The Canyonlands, The Arches, Grand Escalante, all were explored during 100 degree plus heat. Driving from New Mexico (which is a hole full of jibbed indians trying to flog dream catchers) stopping off at Roswell (no Aliens but lots of freaks) we arrived In Texas. We enjoyed an evening at Billy Bob's (the worlds largest honky tonk) where we crooned along to country and drank weak beer with cowboys. We sat for three hours in Austin waiting to behold the specatacle that was North America's largerst bat colony emerging to feed from Congress Bridge. Three hours later and Claire was anemic having been eaten alive by mosquitoes and ... read more

Well - hello everyone! It was the day of the game - the ballgame that is! Blue Jays vs Yankees! Actually my masters told me it wasn't much of a game! If you watched it, you know the outcome! My masters left in the 7th inning, to get ahead of the traffic. They said it was great to be part of the excitement of Knology Park. It was a sold out game and parking is very under provided for! Every lawn, driveway and other open land was being "sold" at $10.00 a pop! Dunedin really does it up big - police at the intersections - sheriff's people at the game along with full paramedic support! And of course, there was our entertainment - the guy flogging refreshments here in Dunedin was just about as entertaining as ... read more

Hey - hey - it is almost ballgame day! "Take me out to the ......." oh yeah, I will have to stay here in the room. Too bad, so sad, but it is too hot for my masters to leave me in the car! Lots of wind and almost reached 90F here today! My masters spent a good deal of time by the pool! They are really feeling sorry for the folks back home and the continued winter they are having - and add to that the blackouts around Kitchener. You have our sympathy, folks! Does that really sound like a sincere comment? Around 11 AM, they went to Dunedin and picked up their tickets for the game tomorrow and then checked out the local Wal*Mart. Hey for all of you fellow employees of my master ... read more

Hey y'all: How are you doing today? After I was so rudely awakened this monring, and my masters had their hotel-provided breakfast, we got on the road (7:30 AM). It was to be our longest day yet. We ran into fairly heavy traffic just north of Atlanta and then again when we arrived north of Clearwater (5:45 PM), but other than that it was an uneventful day. The Lord has been good to us as we have travelled and we are grateful to Him. Even our room for the next three days is really great, as you will see from the pictures. My masters hope to go to Dunedin (about 10 mins from here) tomorrow and make sure they know the route for the Jays game on Thursday against the Yankees. Since the pool is right ... read more
