I moved to the DC area when I was four years old and have spent most of my life there although I have lived in Florida for the past seven years. I still visit DC many times a year and will always have ties to it. There is a great deal of culture in the area and so much to do!... read more

Today was the last day of touring we could do before the conference started properly. We decided to do a day trip to the county's capital - Washington DC. The trip was a uneventful 3 hour bus journey, that was made all the more uncomfortable by a big oaf in front of me who insisted on reclining his chair to the maximum amount. I had to stare at his big oily fat head the whole journey while trying to fight back fits of clostraphobia. Our first impressions of Washington were "what a clean city". Yup, I officially deem this the cleanest nicest city I've seen in the US so far. All the roads are super wide and the building exteriors look like they're washed daily. Everything smelt of order and preciseness. Washington is the capital, and ... read more

Hellooooo again!!!!! Well Washington DC!!!! Its not that great!!! I'm heading back to NYC a day earlier than planned cause I don't really like it here!!!! I'm glad to because originally I wanted to book for a week in DC and couldn't cause there was no accommodation available...So I ended up spending longer in Boston than planned and I'm glad because I LOVED Boston!!!! Everything that you pretty much want to see in DC is closed due to either 9/11 or renovations!!!! So I didn't even bother going to the White House...because all I would've been able to do was take a picture, which I did from the tour bus anyway!!! The FBI building is closed...The National Monument is closed!!!! I really wanted to go into the FBI building to!!! Also if its not closed and ... read more

Back in Washington D.C. It’s been over 10 years since we’ve been here. The last time was when we were returning for being stationed in Turkey. We stopped off in December to visit my friend Sally and do the tourist thing. Today was our first day in the city so we decided to start off at the Smithsonian Museum of American History and finish off with the Corcoran Art Museum. The history museum is pretty large so we decided to divide up the museum and do a different portion everyday. Our first day we toured the 3rd floor that housed most of the military exhibits. We saw a 100,000 dollar bill and some early roman coins in the money exhibit. We were taking a break next to the gunboat which was sunk in Lake Champlain during ... read more

We left New York City that afternoon and drove back down to Washington DC. Later that evening, Van made plans for us to meet up with a high school friend who was working in the area as an urban planner. Our plans were to meet up at a Cuban restaurant called Citron in the Dupont Circle area. Dinner was great and I discovered a wonderful Cuban drink called a mojito. After dinner, we just walked around Dupont Circle which is a very trendy and hip neighborhood of Washington DC. Van and her friend made plans to meet up again tomorrow for lunch. Today was a long day of driving so we headed back to Van's sister's house for an early night. The next day was an early start as we were going to have a ... read more

Washington, DC, was the next stop on this trip. We took the Pennsylvania Railroad's Senator from New York to Washington, DC. (This was long before Amtrak.) It was exciting to have my first trip on an East Coast railway. My first visit to the National Capital! A day of Gray Line sightseeing in Washington took us to the US Capitol, the Smithsonian, the National Air and Space Museum, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery. We saw the National Geographic Society Museum and Library of Congress on our own. In 1965, the National Air and Space Museum was housed in World War II Quonset huts set on the National Mall. I liked seeing the Wright Brothers Flyer and Lindbergh's Spirt of St Louis displayed there. I was a devoted reader of National Geographic, ... read more
