Dear All I continue my travel blog write-up of my hugely enjoyable two-week trip through New England by writing up about my time spent in the delightful state of Connecticut in this entry. Being New England's southernmost state, and bordering energetic and buzzing New York to its south-west, I rather expected Connecticut to be busier and less New England-y than my previous destinations so far - but boy was I wrong! Connecticut seemed quintessential New England, with lovely little towns filled with white clapper-board houses and tall white-spired churches, super-friendly people, and bodies of water everywhere - whether it was the sea, a lake or a river, houses seemed to be just built next to a waterway. I loved Connecticut, and enjoyed my time there very much. After having gratefully received a lift from my mansion ... read more

Build Day! Which mean van jams on the way to the site! Of course for K2C, that means Winnebago, because, what else is there? I do love these moments and will miss them, regardless of how much we hate piling into that van, especially in the hot summer sun. We arrive on site at a park where we are greeted by our kind and dedicated AH lead Adam, who is excited that we are here today! He explains how a few years ago Bike & Build came through and helped clean up this park, create seating, and blaze the trail. But now, looking around, its all severely overgrown--the seating is barely visible due to high weeds, overgrowth along the fence, and supposedly there is a trail in the woods, though it is currently unrecognizable. Adam is ... read more

Another hard wood floor wake up with lots of alarms going off all at once echoing through the high ceilings of the gymnasium walls. This is Bike & Build life. Since it was laundry night last night, I have the fun task of being sure all my clean clothes are folded and packed away efficiently in addition to packing away the normal sleeping bag and thermarest. This morning I get to slip into comfy shorts and tank top, rather than wiggle myself into my shams while in my sleeping bag. We eat left over pizza for breakfast, and though I usually am picky with left over pizza, I don't hate it this morning. I do thoroughly enjoy sitting in a circle while eating breakfast all together. We have route meeting a ways away from where we ... read more

Connecticut, one of the most beautiful states in New England just right off the border of New York and Long Island, New York and Rhode Island. I really like the attractions the state of Mark Twain has to offer. You can discover the Plymouth that occurred during the history of Connecticut, the ship that took place in the 16th to 17th Century when Jamestown started in production of making tobacco era. I drove through Connecticut when I was driving to Massachusetts in Spring 2012. I was like going inside the ship and saw many colonial historical features and I was like,"Whoa, are you kidding me?! New England got good colonial history to learn from." So I'm a Virginia resident and did a road trip from Virginia to New England. You cannot beat that kind of road trip. ... read more

Pepe Pizzeria opens at 11.30 am and almost immediately an attempt to eat in the premises will cost one 50 minutes. That is because people from all over travel to Pepe’s for their “tomato pies”- thin crusts of pizza dough one can eat with or without cheese but always loaded with home made tomato sauce and one’s pick of toppings. To tell the truth, the stuff is good. Realizing that pizza was not meant to be a piece of bread always loaded with heavy cheese is good news for any lactose intolerant person, but aside from that, the “pies” are tasty – with big chunks of garlic in the sauce and pieces of bacon cooked to perfection. Waiting in line is not fun, but no one ever seems to leave. It is a 50 minute wait ... read more

Diary entry for the last 3 days - photos to follow We diverted off our main route - to head South East to a beach resort just up the coast east of New York - to Madison and Clinton, Connecticut. Due to extreme weather again we stayed an extra day with cousins Bernie and wife Raquel. Carol had a cycle and swim with Raquel whilst I had a relaxing time chatting about family stuff with Bernie. Over the last couple of days we have eaten in a genuine '50s diner, visited the Harley factory (closed due to bad timing - arrived on a Sunday) We stayed in a B&B which was in it's own setting of woodland and lakes. The owner's dad was in charge on arrival - bit of a lad. Left us to choose ... read more

We took the train on a fairly non-descript route from NYC to New Haven. Then we drove on a country road route through beautiful, lush countryside. We'd forgotten the meaning of green with our drought at home but this green we've never seen much before. It was lovely to take the slow route. We stopped at a Dairy Queen for an ice cream with mobs of junior baseballers, then in Mystic, a sea town for a wander along the streets. In a suburb of Providence we spotted an authentic looking italian restaurant. It sure was as there was no menu! Anna was not so impressed with her bolognese but my matriciana was fine. Bedtime found us in Seekonk, MA for a wonderful sleep.... read more

On Friday, I drove down to New Haven to hang out with my cousin Cricky for the night at Yale. I hadn't seen her since I visited last December when she held a party. Cricky, her boyfriend and myself all went out to eat at a Thai restaurant close to campus shortly after I arrived. Prior to this I had never eaten Thai food, but I'll try anything at least once. Other than the shrimp, I'm not really sure what else was in the Pad Thai that I ordered but it was excellent. Cricky and Will steered me in the right direction, because I was having a difficult time choosing between things with names like "Khanom chin namya" and "Pad kee mao". After dinner we went back to campus and hung out at Cricky's place ... read more
