Day 19: Monticello, UT to Dolores, CO Total Miles: 61 (1267.8mi total) Talk about hard work. We actually managed to get a great place to stay last night near the local cafe and it was a windy night. We got free breakfast at the Comfort Inn because the girl working there was supportive of our ride and let us have it; that was nice of her. Daniel decided to stick around town and get some things done while me and Jess headed off towards Dolores, CO and maybe beyond. Well, beyond never happened. We managed the first 18 miles or so on a sub-par road but nothing all that bad in terms of weather. And then it started to blow and man it blew hard. The remainder of the day had us fighting sustained 20+mph headwinds ... read more

May 21 Day 6 Cortez, Co, Mesa Verde, Durango, Co. Just a few minutes to Mesa Verde from Cortez. We show our "old fart's pass" at the entrance ($10 gives you entrance for the rest of your life, if you are 50 or older.) and start the climb UP to the top of the green mesa. And I mean UP. For 40 minutes we go UP and UP. The views becoming more and more spectacular. At 8,000 feet we level off and stop at Park Point for a jaw dropping 360 degree view that easilly extends for 100 miles. We drive to the visitor's center, a moderate walk up a minor slope and ask the park ranger what we can see that does not entail strenuous walking. Noticing our huffing and puffing, he immediately offers us ... read more

Reece: Waking up early, eager to see the mountains that were now no longer cloaked in darkness, we set off down scenic Route 34 towards Estes Park. (P.S. We got the cinnamon buns. They should not be, and probably are not, world famous.) Even before arriving at the Rockies we were greeted with a spectacular drive through the Roosevelt National Forest where a winding road led us through a canyon following the Big Thompson River. The sides of the canyon were so tall and so sheer we couldn’t even see the sky until we made our way out. Arriving at the entrance gate to the park Caitlin jumped at the opportunity to get an annual pass that allows one to go to any national park in the country. At the Falls View visitors center we were ... read more

Caitlin: Well folks, allow me to apologize in advance—for I am lacking the beautiful diction and syntax that Reece possesses. Let’s be glad that it is he who is studying English at the fine State University of NJ and not myself…. That being said, Reece does think that I take better photos….so I suppose we make a good team. Make sure you keep your eyes open for when he publishes his Kerouac-esque chronicle of our adventure. Monday was a glorious day all & all. Waking up in backcountry is an experience that rivals all. Anywhere. For those who have not experienced backcountry living….do it! Relieving yourself of all the stimuli that you think you need….think you like…think you want- is liable to be one of the most philosophical & spiritual experiences you can have….but it is ... read more

Reece will be guest-authoring this entry because of his uncanny love for the seemingly boring, but beautiful state of Kansas. Kansas, the sunflower state. Sunflowers seen during trip: 0. Ever since the early stages of planning for this trip, Caitlin and I had a prejudice towards Kansas that entailed a long, straight, monotonous drive on Interstate 70. Originally we planned to simply drive from St. Louis directly to Denver all in one day. When it comes down to it, that is what we did essentially, but to me it has been the best drive so far. Instead of becoming desensitized to the beauty of what is considered fly-over country, I became more and more distraught at the fact that I would probably never see a place like Kansas in person ever again. Eastern Kansas, surprisingly, is ... read more

May 19-Day 5-Bryce Cyn, Capitol Reef, Glen Cyn, Natural Bridges, Mexican Hat Woke up this morning feeling tired because I didn't sleep well due to the 8,000 foot altitude. Just carrying the luggage to our room was a chore with lots of huffing and puffing. Let's face it, I'm not built like an athlete and even an athelete would have a little trouble in this place. The Best Western Ruby Inn is a very big hotel with a pretty nice restaurant and many opportunities for shopping. It's located just a few miles from the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park. It's a beautiful morning at 7am as we drive into the park with temperatures in the low 60's with promises of a much warmer afternoon. A beautiful blue sky has ominious thunderhead clouds to the east ... read more

It took us ages to actually even get out of Texas, the place is massive. The gruelling 23 hour journey from Houston to Denver was made bearable by the beautiful scenery we encountered as we got near to Colorado. After going through the flat pan handle region it was such a treat for the eyes to see foot hills and green trees. We made quite a few stops on the way, including Amarillo. Yes Greyhound showed us the way to Amarillo! We even came across an American woman we had met in Memphis. She had asked us to look after her elderly mother (82!!!! what a grand age to live till and still be quite active in mind and body) who was on her way to Lake Charles (which is half way between Baton Rouge and ... read more

starting off writing this darn thing is always the hardest part... i have spent the last few days in Colorado Springs, CO, visiting my brother Michael. Let's just say it was an eventful few days, Baird Drama at it's best!! lol. just kidding. We got to Colorado Springs saturday night... AND it was free! Michael's friend Sean (and my friend too!) let me and Laura stay with him. May 14. I can honestly say we did nothing! AND it was great. The weather was not the best so we were not able to be tourists...soo sad! BUT instead we were full blown girls. Laura and I went on base and made Michael bring us shopping at the PX. The PX is kind of like Walmart. It started off boring, until i found the discount Bath and ... read more

Hi Everyone, So all that bad, cold weather we've been complaining about the past week and a half, well it doesn't sound all that bad right now. We are camping in Moab, Utah just outside of Arches National Park and it is about 91 degrees at 7 pm. Apparently this is about 10-15 degrees warmer than usual. We just can not win! Today we visited Mesa Verde National Park and it was stunning. Mesa Verde is the ancestral home of the Pueblo Indians located on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. To reach the park we climbed Mount Montezuma to about 9,000 feet. The panoramic views were amazing. They are amazing cliff dwellings located throughout the park, however, some of the larger sites require a guided tour. The rangers recommended that we visit the Cliff Palace ... read more

Hi Another red hot day in Denver; but spent a while indoors taking in the limited tourist options. After getting up early I walked across downtown to the State capitol building which at least is distinct from all the other skyscraper towers in design and to see what time the art museam and the colorado history museam opened; which was an hour or two away. But in the meantime I got chatting to a mexican employee at the art museum (whom was cleaning outside) all about life here in Colorado and about the massive range of poverty and wealth in this country and I have seen alot of people living in teh streets in Denver only metres away from financial skyscrapers this morning. I later visited the Colorado History Museam which was great, lots of interesting ... read more
