Missy’s Place, Fort Morgan, Colorado We spent a wonderful three days catching up with my sister and her family. Only real exciting event was yesterday evening’s tornado, about 8 miles away. The tornado did a fair amount of damage to a dairy farm, including killing several of the cows and wiping out the ‘parlour’ (I guess that’s the place where they milk them). One of Dave and Missy’s vet employees was on the scene to help with the animals. Otherwise it was a real quiet three days. Joan and I slept in every morning and also took naps every afternoon - we are using the time to catch up on our sleep and regain some energy. Of course, we spent a lot of time chatting and sitting around the kitchen table. Dave cooked us three really ... read more

Day 24: Road closures for a Sunday event forced us through Montrose suburbs. Gave us a chance to observe new houses on subdivisions. All nearly identical but nice, & for a fraction of Auckland prices. Less regulations perhaps? After locating our self plotted route we were soon on excellent adventure riding gravel tracks. Unfortunately Google & the local rancher had a different interpretation of legal roads & we came to a locked gate & a no trespass sign. Working around this blockage on our GPS we went up another gravel road but this was locked off also - probably the same ranch! Back to the last turnoff and we were on a county road heading for our route a longer way round to Silver Jack Reservoir. Here we followed a gravel road before turning off onto ... read more

Day 22: One way street systems are not conducive to good navigating. However after circling one end of the town trying to work out how to get on the route we eventually crossed the elusive Colorado river which were trying to find yesterday. We then linked with our our self plotted route. Feeling fresh after an interesting rest day where we had, on the first night an entertaining Tepenyaki restaurant experience with a well trained cooking tool rattling & flipping chef (actually a Vietnamese Eurasian with an American serviceman father who he can't find). Then on our actual day off a visit to Main Street for the farmers market (dinner in a Nepalese restaurant with accompanying live music from a street band), together with a visit to a shopping mall we didn't really want to go ... read more

My Sister’s Home, Fort Morgan, Colorado Last year, on our very last night before arriving back home, in a state park near Clayton, New Mexico, the motor that pulls the trailer slide-out in and out quit functioning. It failed while the glider was in, so we could still travel. But it meant that we spent the last night in extremely cramped quarters. Fortunately, we were very tired and all we wanted to do was sleep anyway, so it didn’t make much difference. But it seems that if we get trailer problems they want to happen at the end of our trips. And so it was, night before last. After a long day of driving on Wednesday, we pulled into the Valentine, Nebraska municipal park to spend the night. We found what looked like a good campsite, ... read more

I am now returning to finish the blogs for our Alaska trip. I apologize for the break in action but hope to catch up now. We left off with Pike's Peak and our next adventure was seeing the sites around Colorado Springs. We hope you enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed taking them.... read more

Day 19 - Awoke to cloudy skies and very windy, with rain forecast for today from Loveland to Colorado Springs. We hit the I25 and sat on 75mph, around Denver and onto Colorado Springs to see The Garden of the Gods. What a 'Slappin' Horses' moment (only a couple of you will get this!), absolutely amazing landscape, similar to Sedona on a smaller scale. Being a Sunday there were massive crowds out climbing on the rocks. We stopped for a few photos and parked in the bus zone, where a National Parks Office (only a young fella) came up to me with ticket book in hand, he'd already booked a half a dozen cars for parking illegally. So the conversation went along the lines of - Sorry Mate, we're just about to leave, am I getting ... read more

Day 16 - We had a massive storm overnight, plenty of thunder & lighting, heavy rain around 2-3am. Still heavy overcast skies this morning and light drizzle, we headed out to Sturgis for breakfast and a walk around town before the 78th Sturgis Rally gets underway in approximately a months time. All the shops are up and running with all leather biker gear & t shirts stocked to the hilt. As we were due to leave it started to bucket down again, so we headed back to Deadwood to stay out of the rain. Another stroll in Historic Main Street, and the skies started to clear. We decided to head out to Bear Country, 10 miles the other side of Rapid City. It looked pretty dark and bleak as we rode the Interstate to Rapid City. ... read more

We started the day in the fertile river valley of Grand Junction green with fruit trees and vineyards. We picked up some Palisade peaches for lunch before getting back on the road. We enjoyed the drive through the mountain pass to Leadville (elevation 10,152’), crossing the Continental divide one more time, and then winding down through Glenwood Canyon. We ate lunch at the headwaters of the Arkansas and finally drove on to Colorado Springs. We stopped in Manitou to fill our bottles with natural soda water, and drove through Garden of the Godx on our way to our friends’ house. While here in the Springs we have had wonderful meals with friends, hiked Pulpit Rock, visited the Air Force Academy and took in the beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air.... read more

Ever feel like you belong somewhere else? Somewhere you aren't a stranger? My names Lucas and these thoughts inspired me to pack up and hike across the country when I turned 18. Everyone thought it was a pipe dream I wouldn’t finish because I was broke but I didn’t care. I travelled for months meeting a lot of interesting people but nowhere I belonged until a bus I was planning on taking to Tucson was running late so a worker offered to swap my ticket, I said sure, I don’t care where and she handed me a ticket to Durango, Colorado. Upon arrival I noticed the small town was surrounded by miles of mountains. I explored the town and everybody I met was incredibly friendly. One guy I met asked if I smoked and I said ... read more

Our first camping trip in Colorado with the motorhome! We were excited to get out and explore. The Great Sand Dunes was on our list of places to see in Colorado. We found a KOA campground with an opening mid July so we headed off for our 3 1/2 hr trip to the Alamosa KOA. Just a few weeks prior to our arrival, Alamosa had experienced the 3rd largest fire in Colorado - The Spring Fire. In fact the highway had just opened the day before our travel and it was 91% contained. We could still smell and see some smoke that resulted from the fires. It was a very sad thing to see all the nice green landscape that had turned to brown and black from the fire damage. The campground was a nice campground ... read more
