My first flight, on a plane bound for Los Angeles, California USA. Bleedin' hell that was a long and boring 14 hours, at least i slept some of the time. Finally landed in Los Angeles approximately 3 hours before i left date/time wise and drove up highway 1 (scenic coastal route) to the San Francisco Bay Area. Jetlag made me pull over and sleep about halfway to my destination. I began my Californian sunburn there since i was spontaneously tired where there was no shade and had to pull over immediately. Once i got to Berkeley i absent mindedly tried to find Leticia and Jonathan's place without asking for directions and promptly got lost, one of my favourite things to do. Almost everytime i get lost i find something i haven't seen before that i really ... read more

For first full day in LA I had booked to go to San Diego Zoo. San Diego is about 2.5 hours down the south coast of California. On the trip I was joined by a noisy bunch of Aussies, as they are called here and some other travellers from Canada, Italy and America). So after a brief hello, I quickly sided with the Canadians on board and enjoyed travelling through the day with Trevor and Gordon. The drive down had a few highlights for the group and some were just special for the driver. The first one the driver wanted to mention was the monument for Dolly Parton’s breasts. Well it was actually a power station, but anyway the driver wanted to infer something about the shape of the two plants. I thought the fuel source ... read more

Yogi and Boo Boo's big adventure...... Jen and I got ourselves ready for our trip to Yosemite national park on Monday the 18th July, both pretty nervous and not sure what to expect, we knew it would be a whole bunch of people sharing one bus for 4 days without showers but we didn't know how many or how it would all work out at all. We prepared ourselves by buying a couple of bottles of wine and some small bottles of whiskey and brandy, so at least we'd get through thte first night if nothing else! We filled ourselves up on the free food at the hostel again - really tasty and so much of it, I can't praise this hostel enough. So we ate up and then a few people gathered in the foyer ... read more

With the logic of international timelines I landed two hours before I left. I must say the benefit of gaining a day did not compensate enough for the fact that the flight was very very long. I spent most of the bonus day just recovering. When I arrived at LAX, I thought I would have time to adjust to being in the USA, by staying at the airport club to freshen up, but to my surprise I was out of the airport before I knew it. The way we were directed meant that it was only about 200 meters from the plane gate through customs and baggage to find myself in the airport exit foyer. At this point I had no US money and was still half a sleep. Fortunately I found my way through and ... read more

So here we are in San Francisco, the first stop on the new trip, my first time in America and I am loving it! I arrived Tuesday afternoon after a very long but uneventful flight with a dissapointing array of inflight films, I was hoping for Batman Begins, War of the Worlds or ............... but instead I got 'Bridget Jones's Diary: Part 2' and 'Hitch'...........hmmmm. Jen and I had got seperate flights so it was very strange when I was waiting in the hostel room to hear a knock at the door and find Jen on the otherside, all the way out here in California when the last time I saw her was a few weeks ago in Mumbles in Wales! We managed to keep ourselves awake until about 9.30/10pm by having a couple of beers ... read more

Hey All, Techincally I'm in Tokyo while writing the first part of this (or just outside of it) and I just dropped $13 on noodles and a ginger ale... good bye Vietnam discount, hello Japan! I could not bring myself to schlep into Tokyo at 7:00am after two hours of plane sleep so I've been kickin' it here at the airport. Crashed out in a day room for some horizontal sleep and am now updating the blog. I can't save pictures from here so will add those when I'm back home. On to our last two days in Hoi An. Saturday, we took a tour of My Son, a sacred place of the Champa people back in the 1st through, oh, did he say 6th? century. It's a bit like Macchu Pichu, in that it is ruins that ... read more

WEST COAST WHIRLWIND Spring Break, March 11 - 20, 2005 We had a marvelous but whirlwind trip to California and Oregon during spring break! First, we spent three and a half days with Bill and Shirley and our handsome grandsons, enjoying their gorgeous new landscaping, several meals at the Club, touring the Battleship Midway in San Diego, taking the boys for haircuts and a movie, going to Mass, touring model homes in the area, and just playing with Will and Henry. On Tuesday, March 15, we drove up to Guadalupe, California, to see Cousin Larue, stopping at Buellton for its famous split-pea soup and the Danish village of Solvang on the way. After touring the beautiful and unique Guadalupe Sand Dunes Park, we spent the night with Larue, and then the three of us took off ... read more

Well, everyone, I made it home safe and sound, and extremely tired. It sure feels good to be home with the dogs (who didn't miss me nearly enough - Kelly and Zach took such good care of them!) I'm all unpacked and it was a blast going through and organizing all my shopping goodies. I got some really cool stuff. I had a couple friends stop by today, and I am struggling mightily with jet lag. I'm trying my best to stay up until 10 p.m. I downloaded all my pictures, so I'm going to browse and add any cool ones I find, in no particular order. This will be my last post, so thanks again for all the time and positive thoughts you sent to me. Talk to you soon!... read more

SUNNY-AS-FUCK CALIFORNIA We finally cross the border into California, where there was a little checkpoint where a uniformed border control officer actually had the nerve to make me stop the car so that he could ask me if I had any fruits or vegetables on board. Despite the fact that the bed of my truck was filled with bags that could have stored a grip of bananas, I simply said "No dude", and he let me on my way. Next time I drive to California, I'm smuggling across a ton of bananas, just because I can. And maybe some drugs, too. As soon as we drove into California, the sun nearly fucking melted the rubber tires on my car; the temperature guage in my truck read 120 degrees, and rolling down the windows to smoke a ... read more
