Cathy and I are headed to San Francisco for a couple of days before we depart. We get to see our friend Dudley Connell and the Seldom Scene perform in Berkeley on Friday night and spend Easter with Alex and Jeff before boarding on Sunday. When we retired, one of our priorities was travel. Our experience so far told us that the aspect of travel that we appreciate is to get to really know the areas we visit, by "living" there. While we try to log some tourist attractions, what we really enjoy is to spend time in the neighborhoods, visiting coffee shops, wine bars and local restaurants. I'm at home in Windsor, CA still need to get a head lamp for spelunking and late night trips to the hole in the ground!!! Johns packing his Jack Wolfskin backpacking backpack. its a nice bag! I bought a Lowe Alpine. We got them both off of craigslist for $60!!! saved like $400 between the two of us. I had a nice REI that I've used for all of my other trips but the rats ate a whole thru the bottom this winter. I dont know what I left in there but it looked like a really sugary pink coconut concoction. I have a vauge memory of purchasing that treat, involving a chicken bus and some 9 year old Guatemalan boys with no shoes or shirts at a traffic jam. With this fabulous new schedule that I have, we decided to take advantage of the very first 4 day weekend to make a quick trip down to Cali and get out of town. The alarm went off at 7am and I hit the snooze button without thinking so we were a little slow getting out the door. By 9am the Escape was loaded up and we were on the road. It was pouring down rain as we headed south but I had hopes that it would get better the farther we got.
