So we arrived Sunday afternoon, after an 11 hour flight in which the Harry Potter series kept us busy.:) Chet's on Book 5, I am on Book 2. It was great to have a 5 inch thick book for Chet because at least it slowed him down a little, he went through 2 of them. Steve met us at the airport with two happy pups and Susie surprised us by flying in, too! It was so nice seeing both their faces as we arrived! We talked their ears off the entire way back home about all our memories and experiences. First stop we made of course, was In 'N Out. Chet's request. I do have to admit that the food tasted pretty outstanding. No one makes fries like them. Then, that night, we had my favorite, ... read more

Amidst all the hustle and bustle of planning, alas, we have made some of our reservations, but have yet to still do one very important thing: PACK. Ha. I have been blogging on this very subject, yet every time I stress the importance of packing to my husband, or remind myself, I find ....something else to do. These things to do are not necessary for our trip. I usually end up unpacking a new box or find something to re-organize around the house. :) Ah, the joys of procrastination. On Monday, Chet and I had a lovely breakfast at Egg's N Things in Ventura. There is something to be said about sitting in a little breakfast nook restaurant, drinking house coffee, eating Eggs Benedict and finalizing all the places we would like to visit. Somehow ... read more

Why is it that we restrict these sorts of lists to five or ten things? You'll never hear, "These are my top 17 favorite ways to cook corn." Nor have I ever heard of a "Top 6, 7 or 8." It is always a top 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, etc...Because of this manifold silliness I have, while restricting my list to five points, I have sneakily snuck in probably 17 or so things. Don't tell the authorities. Anyway, without further ado and in no particular order, my top five things anticipated: 1) Taking pictures of cities that have existed longer than America has been a country. Ever since Mission Impossible, or maybe it was one of the Bond movies, either way, ever since this moview I saw Prague in the Czech Republic has haunted my ... read more

Still haven't begun packing, but I can say that I appreciate that Chet went out and bought travel size containers for our shampoo and soap. He also bought little locks which I am sure we will need!:) Have been getting excited that there are two days left to work.:) The cool thing is, thinking of things like, when we are looking at the moon, thinking of looking at the moon in a little over a week in Europe. I just read through some of the features of this site and they only allow 50 pictures, for the crazy picture people we are, I had to go ahead and update our photobucket site. Here's the link to our album. First picture's in: http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c363/KHervey/ ... read more

I'm sitting here in my quaint little living room in Somis, California, and trying to wrap my mind around the fact that I need to fit seven weeks' worth of normal everyday living items into one suitcase. As I go through my mental checklist, I realize that things that seem to be necessities as I live my life here in California, are not necessarily needed for our trip in Europe. As I shave the list down quickly, I realize that this trip will be a growing and learning experience for us in many ways. I am thrilled to come back a changed person and excited to see how God wants to grow us through this adventure! On to the beginning stages of packing! P.S. I experimented to see if the map works. Hi gang Wow what a day. It seems that today has been more like a da and a half because it was so busy!! But what a fantastic day we had. I started my day visiting this most A-M-A-Z-I-N-G school which is like a "practice school"attached to the University of Southern California Channel Isles. I spent several enlightening hours looking at this wonderfully bi-lingual school and checking out the school environment including their Pre-school facility. What can I say?? I really enjoyed looking around and getting lots of ideas. Their "Home Ec"unit is attached to the Music section and they share a facility which they call a Diner. They are looking at changing the cafeteria food and so much more. They are also teaching the students bi-lingually which means they run a 50/50 program which changes ... read more

Hello all you blog-a-holics! We are back in the USA though we are still travelers at heart. I spent last weekend (July 1 - July4) out on Santa Rosa Island 42 miles off the coast of California in the Channel Islands National Park. The island was epic and the company was fantastic. Prior to departure Abby and I had a chance to spend time with my brother as he was visiting California in preparation for his upcoming MBA program. It was great to see him and spend some time together. I loof forward to connecting with the rest of my family in a month or so, however, it was great to see Josh and find out he is doing great. Abby did not join me on the camping trip, however, I was in the company of ... read more

During our Christmas visit to see my mother and and in Los Angeles in 1984, we ll took a day trip up the coat to Ventura and Santa Barbara. After a morning coffee break at Oxnard, we arrived in Ventura. The city of Ventura is the gateway to California's Channel Islands. Most of the northern islands of the chain are part of Channel Islands National Park. The park headquarters, at Ventura Harbor Village, has interpretive displays about the islands and their flora, fauna, aquatic life, and ecosystem. (The Channel Islands themselves can be reached by private boats or through park tours. There are beaches and hiking trails on the islands.) We spent some time viewing the displays at the visitor center, which Susan said reminded her of the one at Assateague National Seashore in Virginia. It ... read more

Alta California, the present-day state of California, was claimed for Spain by explorer Juan Cabrillo in 1534. (Hence Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro today.) Spain paid little attention to this distant possession for the next two hundred years. By the middle of the 18th century, Britain and Russia were expanding their claims to territory along the Pacific Coast of North America. Charles III decided it was time to enforce Spain's claim to Alta California. In 1769, Gaspar de Portolá was dispatched to lead an expedition northward from Loreto in Baja California and establish a permanent garrison at Monterrey Bay. A company of Soldados de Cuervo (Spanish colonial troops who wore a distinctive leather jacket), and Franciscan missionaries set out on an overland trek to a place as described two hundred years previously. The route they followed ... read more
