Day 10 - Sunday 4 June 2007, Santa Cruz to San Francisco We left our hotel in Mariposa around 10am to head to Santa Cruz, the place that I know of because 'The Lost Boys' was filmed there! I have to admit, I really am a sucker for places that I can name because I'm seen them in a movie!! Sad, but true! We stopped for lunch and all tried the local delicacy, Garlic Fries.... nice, but I think once was enough. I guess I'm safe from vampires though! After lunch we headed next door to the mini golf range and played an 18 hole game of pirate themed mini golf. Toni turned out to be a golf shark, beating us all (John admittedly only by a couple of shots) - turns out she's played ... read more

March 30, 2007 (4/10/07; 5/9/07) ...yawn.... been up all night pricing hotels, campgrounds, and hostels in Greece. Some good finds-- now just need to connect. I've got a little more leg room to plan for Italy now. After about a week in Greece, and a couple days in Serbia, we'll make our way to meet Apollo and Athena in Venice. By this point, we'll have a third travel partner as well-- Nia. In the works: Venice, Italy Athena and Apollo have been doing a bit of research on Italy in regards to where to stay and transportation. Planning on our part has been somewhat at a hault since we have our first travel leg plans to still sort. As Oceanus and I fine-tune our Greco-Serb itinerary, the Italy leg well come into more detail. So far ... read more

This entry is my planning reel...not much on travel adventure just yet. March 29, 2007 8:29 thursday morning: Plan shpan Sigh... the Santa Cruz sun's come up from over the palm trees and draped itself onto the deck, bleeding into the the front room. A few more minutes and it'll find his way into the office where I'm sitting, to warm my toes. There's a blue jay that's been hopping around the complex this past weekend, and for the first time I've seen, he's just paid a visit to my cacti on the porch. I should probably put out a bird feeder to coerce him from poking into my prized sand dollar cactus-- as gorgeous as you are, don't even dare Mr. Bluejay... the first signs of spring... 8:58 am and my second pot of coffee ... read more

Nov 12, 2006 My surprise gift to Ganesh for our 3rd wedding anniversary. He thought it was Alcatraz all the while. He did not find out until we were nearing Scotts valley exit on Hwy 17. There was no reservations necessary. The first train ride was at 11:00 am. There were 2 other rides back to back at 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm. It was raining near home on Saturday. Fortunately for us, the sky cleared up sunday; in fact, it was sunny; still cold, though. A $6 parking fee gets you into the lot. We reached around 10:00 am. We were the 3rd in line. It was like a different world in there. You enter the place through a small bridge. Cross the bridge and this beautiful pond appears to your right. There were many ... read more

Picked up my rental car around 10 AM and headed down Highway 1 to Santa Cruz. This was the first stretch of Highway 1 that I have driven on and it had plenty of great views of the coastline. Along the way I could see plenty of surfers out. For most of the drive down, the weather was drizzly and overcast. However, thing cleared up significantly by the time I got to Santa Cruz. It was mostly blue skies and about 75 degrees. Interestingly, I could see Montery off in the distance blanketed in fog. I arrived in Santa Cruz around 1 PM and my surf lesson was scheduled to begin around 4 PM. So, I rented a bicycle and rode just behind the boardwalk, out on the wharf, and on some bicycle paths in Santa ... read more

After a good night’s rest to recover from our hike we headed west toward San Francisco. The drive to SF was pleasant and the skies were clear. Upon arriving in SF we quickly learned why the local shops sell so many sweatshirts! It was cool and breezy. We headed for the Fisherman’s Wharf area eager for a seafood lunch. After lunch we took a drive down the curviest road in America, Lombard Street. Aaron then took the car down what must be the steepest residential street in America which made Johanna a bit nervous. Thankfully the brakes on our rental car handled the decline without any problems. Next we drove across the Golden Gate Bridge and stopped for some pictures in the park just across the bay before leaving the city. We got onto Route 1 ... read more

Hello everyone Fresh from surfing, well totally worn out from surfing would be more accurate. I can't raise my arms above my head and I could fall asleep right now (its 3.45pm). I finally managed to stand on the board, if only for a few seconds and the waves were much bigger today. Which is great fun but when you're trying to paddle back out and a wave catches you its like being hit with an enormous pillow that knocks you 10 feet back. Our surfing instructor from Monday, AJ, was there again. Looking like the most hung over man who have ever existed, walking into display stands and being unable to pick up his own board. However, after a quick dip in the Pacific he was jumping, wooping and generally acting the all American hero ... read more

Hi Guys Sorry we've been away for so long. We're in Santa Cruz, surfing! Escaped the craziness of San Fran for the quiet calm of Yosemity National Park. Great place (great burgers and giant bears called Smokey who attack Fords!) Basically did a 8 mile walk, sound OK but not quite so fun when you climb 4000 feet in the process and its 100 degrees. Still the views from Yosemity waterfall were amazing (and i got to have a swim in a mountain top stream (15 out of 10 on the refreshing scale). Now we're in Santa Cruz, our kind of town, very chilled. Are doing surfing. Cesco is of course a natural, surfed all the way in on his first attempt. Me, I'm pursuing the new sport of falling off a surf board in as ... read more

We left Monterrey after touring the customs house and the Pacific Museum and headed toward Pigeon Point Lighthouse, some 20 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1. In Santa Cruz, we finally found a Safeway under its own proper name and stocked up. Not far beyond Santa Cruz, the beachscape became stark. We stopped to view windsurfers skimming over the waves in a stiff wind and brilliant sunshine. Pigeon Point is a delightful place: intact though crumbling old lighthouse with adjoining Victorian house and lofty fog signal building, plus four or five bunkhouses for the hostel. We stayed in Bunkhouse Dolphin. From the kitchen you could see the setting sun to the West. From the rear bench, you could see seals' backs and whales' spouts. A tidepool is below the hostel to one side, plus ... read more
