... read more

February 27 - March 10, 2006 Ferndale - Santa Cruz, Calif. Mile 1,731 Forget what I said about “sunny California” in the last entry. It’s still winter here, and we’ve had our share of precipitation in the last 10 days, some of it frozen! In the high-elevation logging town of Redway, we were pelted with such high-velocity hail that I worried our new windshield would shatter; my umbrella blew inside out at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco; we got caught in a downpour on our bikes in Palo Alto and arrived at my aunt’s house completely soaked; plus other soggy adventures. The good news is that we’ve been able to determine that Matilda is watertight, because she’s kept us dry even in the most torrential downpours. This entry covers our week in the San Francisco Bay ... read more

The first morning of 2006 and I can barely tolerate the noise of my fingers banging on the keyboard. Today's task is to find my daughter and get us both to SFO in time to meet the rest of our intrepid little group. These are many of the same people who were scheduled to go to Sri Lanka last year when the tsunami cancelled the trip at the last moment. This year bird flu and war threatened to cancel the trip. I guess with 18 hours left until takeoff I could still get a call from the Dean saying that he's pulling the plug. Enough of this racket. Back to bed. P.S. Some of you may be wondering about this new format for my dispatches. It's an experiment. I'm requiring all of the partticipants to ... read more

Well today started off quite emotionally, with a sad goodbye "gathering" in one of the rooms where we presented Priska, the greatest tour leader ever with a framed photograph of the group and the crazy Japs read us out a message thanking us for being kind and including them in everything even though they couldn't speak much english. Apparently the 30 second speech took them about 2 hours to translate into perfect english! We were quite a close group. Fortunately for me, 4 girls were joining me on another week's tour starting later today. So then after breakfast we got in the car together as a group for the last time. We headed to the Golden Gate Bridge again, this time to walk over it. Then we drove to the 7 sisters - a group of ... read more

Quiet. The sun beats down on the bleachers. They are hot. People carry umbrellas, wear baseball hats, shimmer with shiny oil over their skin: anything to keep the sun off. Tiny birds flit around the tennis courts. They launch themselves from their corner mud and grass nests, inched between cement arches that shadow the walkway from the gym to the exercise center. They tumble about the air, like children with wings, fluttering over the swimming pool, across the dry grasses which sweep across small hillocks; they overlook the sparkling bay, a hint of the sun caught in their eyes as they flash through evergreens. A battle is taking place on the court below. A slash, and then a flurry of green. The people on the bleachers erupt like an explosion of energy. He (the winner) holds ... read more
