Today's weather was perfect for a road trip, so we packed up and headed to one of our most anticipated bucket list items...The Hearst Castle. William Randolph Hearst referred to the mountain top as La Cuesta Encantada (The Enchanted Hill) and we'd say it more than lives up to its name. To build his amazing castle, he hired California's first female licensed architect to assist with his plan; to build a few modest bungalows on the mountain top (with its 153,000 surrounding acre ranch) he camped on as a boy. But as things go with mega-millionaires...they added on a little bit along the way until he created one the most amazing museums and party palaces we've ever visited. The Casa Grande, (Big House) contains 115 rooms, 38 bedrooms, 42 bathrooms, 14 sitting rooms, 2 libraries, indoor ... read more

10/15/15 Day 8 Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay, Hearst Castle, Cambria, San Simeon Early this morning we enjoyed some fresh cappuccino provided by our hostess on the little terrace at our Santa Barbara Airbnb, accompanied by the delicious rugelach we bought the night before at Trader Joe’s. The morning was cool after last night's much needed rain so we packed up and drove the Alameda Padre Sierra or APS. The APS or “The Riviera” (as it is locally known due to its resemblance to slopes along the Mediterranean coasts of France and Italy) separates the Upper and Lower Riviera. The homes in the Upper Riviera have the best ocean views and generally have larger homes however I would take any home perched on these hills overlooking Santa Barbara and the Pacific if I could ... read more

Like our whole trip our last 2 days have been eventful. On Wednesday we had another sleep in, hit the streets for the morning and had a look at Chinatown, San Fran has the biggest Chinatown is the biggest in North America. It was just like Sydney's but bigger with plenty of people haggling you into their food shops. With it being bigger it had more traditional building and red lanterns along the whole Main Street. We looked around and found a place which sold its roof by the pound so gave that a go. After our visit we walked around, got lost and went to pick up our car. Picking up our car wasn't as straight forward as it should have been. Our pickup location was a rather fancy motel, which looked like it was ... read more

As a child, in the mid-1800s, William Randolph Hearst would come to this San Simeon family-owned ranch to camp under the stars. As a successful businessman, Hearst began building his Mediterranean Revival mansion at this location and filled it with treasures from around the world. The project continued from 1919 to 1947 when his doctors said that he could no longer live in such a remote location. The plan was for a group of buildings that would revolve around a towering main structure in a manner reminiscent of a Spanish hill town. You can see the estate miles away perched on top of the mountain. As you twist and turn up the 5 mile driveway, you pass pastures upon which exotic animals - zebras, giraffes, emu, etc…- once grazed. Casa Grande (the main house) was built ... read more

Another motel room for the night. Travelled across the valley on busy duel carriageway in high winds. The terrain starts to change as one starts to climb up over the hills before you reach the coast. Initially I thought the hills were large sand dunes, but realised as I got nearer that it was just brown grass! As we rose over the first few I realised, yet again, that my perspective was way off, and the ocean no where to be seen. Not much fun on those roads, being blasted by the winds and rocked by the large lorries going by, but made it to Monterey. A very hip, trendy and expensive town which we drove pretty well straight through and onto highway 1. Highway 1 is pretty well as portrayed, but it was a windy ... read more

On our drive south to San Simeon, we came across the Elephant Seals of Piedras Blancas. My....aren't they an attractive lot? They actually have an interesting story. Prized for their wonderful blubber they were over hunted almost to extinction. In 1990 there were 2 dozen recorded. Now there are five thousand of them. If you want to read more about them, they have their own site. http://www.elephantseal.org/index.htm I am attaching some photos. So, we did arrive to San Simean and had a lovely day there. It had changed since we visited on our honeymoon 38 years ago. They now have a great IMAX movie that paints a picture of William Hearst when he was a child and where his dreams for the castle came from. I have included photos of this as well. The gardens like ... read more

Another sleep in this morning as we make our way to San Simeon, we travel along the coast road, it looks a lot like the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia and as we travel along there is pampas grass growing all along the coast line, when the sun shines on them it looks wonderful. As we get closer to San Simeon, you can see Sea Otters playing in the ocean, only just, but you know its them as thier heads bob up and down out of the water, we stop along the way just before San Simeon where you can see about a hundred Elephant Seals sunning themselves on the beach, they look amazing, you look at their sweet little faces and wonder how anyone could harm such an amazing creature, thank goodness for the ... read more

This morning, I continue south in Big Sur. The road has changed completely from yesterday. Fog rolled in overnight, converting the dramatic landscape into an incredibly atmospheric one, with the road and cliffs disappearing into the haze. Thankfully, visibility nearby is still good, or this road would be rather dangerous to drive. Lime Kiln State Park My first major site is another state park, Lime Kiln. This park is my chance to explore one of those ravines the road has to cross. The entrance to the park is rather absurd. Just after the bridge over the ravine, a side road drops straight down the side of the ravine and swings under the bridge. Unlike Bixby, this bridge isn’t interesting from underneath. The side road is very steep. It quickly ends at a parking ... read more

Tuesday 28th December – Day 88 We were up as early as we could be this morning, but in no hurry. We packed, checked out and then caught a cab to the car rental depot in downtown San Francisco. So glad that we took the cab as there was no way that we would have made the hike with our packs on, the cab driver took us over some of the steepest hills we had yet seen in the city. Picking up cars is usually pretty quick because we have prepaid vouchers, this time however we wanted to add an extra day so it took a little while longer. The poor lady behind the counter had to redo the booking 4 times before the computer would process it… by 9:30am we were on our way. The ... read more
