UntitledLisa Bartoletti The van is like a woman--full of secrets. lots to discover and only gives you a ride when she's ready. Or maybe I simply haven't discovered all her secrets. Let's make that maybe a definitive. Just know I was calling AAA from the parking lot of the Hollister Kmart because she wouldn't start. Only a clicking from the dash and a high pitched alarm that would die down slowly. there were tears. Then, magically, she turned over, ahhhh. It was a pleasant ride otherwise through Monterey County and small towns like Tres Pinos along the 25 going south. Now I'm camping for my first night at Pinnacle National Monument, the sun is setting, the 100 degree temperature cooling nicely. I'm not sure at all what i'm making for dinner, but I won't starve! Tomorrow ... read more

When: Saturday, 24th Mar 2007 - Sunday, 25th Mar 2007. What: a relaxing weekend getaway to Hearst castle. Where: California's central & Southern coast. This trip was indeed a "Peekaboo" for Ganesh I planned this surprise trip for his birthday(as his birthday fell on a weekday, we decided to celebrate it over the weekend). He did not know where we were going until later in the day! Considering the occasion & all, it was decided that it really would be a relaxing trip!!! We've certainly never done those before. So, I made hotel reservations @ San Simeon, 170 miles S from home along the Southern CA coast. I chose this place because they had an indoor heated pool & spa. Not to mention a tennis court! I was a little hesitant to reserve tickets online for ... read more

So I am still hanging with my cousins and aunt and uncle. Connor, the oldest, went back to school at San Diego State a few days ago. I have been chillin with Elliot, Anders and Grant. The surf sessions have been good, hopefully one of thes days I will have a ride longer than 2.5 seconds. Man Elliot can shred them waves. We went to the rock today. Morrow Rock is a huge volcanic rock that just chills right in the water. The waves kinda wrap around it and form a nice right wave. There is so much life in the water here, all kinds of birds just chillin and seals that sometimes pop their head up and just look at you, as if to say, "hey thats my wave you blubberless landlubber!" It was interesting ... read more

I am here in the beautiful town of Morro Bay, staying with my very cool Aunt Muffy and Uncle Steve, and their 4 awesome kids. Connor (21), Eliott (19), Anders (13) Grant (12). What a cool family. The trip here was rather long, but I made it without any real problems. So I will take you up to this point. Left Chapel Hill on friday 19th, with Heather and Zena. I had posted a rideshare listing on Craigslist, and Heather said she needed to go to Palm Springs, then to Seattle, and she had some gas money, so I said sweet. Thanks for letting us crash Jimmy. We left at about 6, after waiting all darn day for another rider, who was trying to hitchhike from Wilmington, but he never called back. So we arrived in ... read more

Today after breakfast we left San Francisco and headed south along highway 1 for what was supposed to be some spectacular scenery, only no-one told the weather that. It was raining when we left and got progressivley worse. It did brighten up for a little while but most of the day was miserable. The roads were amazing and so was the scenery that we did manage to get a glimpse of. Our destination tonight was Morro Bay and about an hour before we arrived we spotted a crowd of people standing by the beach alongside the road. We stopped to see what the attraction was and found that the beach was home to hundreds of Elephant Seals. There were seals of all ages and sizes all along the beach. We managed to get within two feet ... read more

or the Big Sur What a drive! It's like driving the Rimutaka Hill Road down the West Coast! We climbed aboard the mighty Chevy to leave San Fran on Wednesday morning. We cruised south in the traffic to Silicon Valley to the dulcit tones of 107.7 The Bone and admired the glass palaces of Yahoo and Oracle. We headed south on Highway 1 to Monterrey, where we visited the magnificent aquarium. (The guidebook was right about this one, no mistake!) Despite the fact that the jellyfish exhibit was closed, the rest of the facility was amazing. The sea otters were gorgeous, the bat rays were slimy (you can touch them....!) and the ocean Sunfish was absolutely fricking enormous. It was definitely more an amusement than learning kind of a place, but there's something satisfying about ... read more

So here we are in California facing the tail end of our little "respite" of sorts from the rigors of traveling. Since it's part of the trip and part of the fun, I'll fill y'all in. About 6, maybe 8 hours before we left for the Lima airport, Masa began running a fever and feeling flu-ish. All that good health we had had the previous eight weeks and now, with literally hours to go, we start to unravel. Poor Masa was really feeling terrible for the entire trip home, which as you know from my previous complaints was something of an ordeal to begin with. We made it to the airport and through the lines and checkin about 3 hours before our flight and chose a cozy boarding gate to rest. Naturally, we picked the gate ... read more

Hi Guys Just been surfing, with seals. It was great, kind of a mixture of the Monkeys and Wildlife on One. There were seals and dolfins surfing in on the same waves as us, at one point we thought there was a shark surfing with us too. Fortunately it was a couple of dolphins, but man its quite scary when you see a fin on the horizon heading your way. Anyway we've managed to sort all our accomodation till the end of the trip. We're at a site called Lake Lopez now and then to Carpinteria and LA. See you then!... read more

Hi Guys In a funny place called San Luis Obispo, between San Fran and LA. A lot has happened suince we left Santa Cruz and nearly all of it could have been included in a Davide Lynch film, when the days are going that way you know you're onto a winner. Basically after waiting for 3 days for a car to take us to the Mojave we got one and set off for Barstow. On the way we stayed at a crappy motel run by an Indian woman from Leeds (obviously) and drove 600 miles through the desert. Cesco, not unreasonably asked whether the purpose of the trip to the Mojave was to visit as many towns that feature in songs as possible. Indeed Barstow and Victorville feature in songs by Jay Farrar and the Willard ... read more
