Hello everyone! Thanks very much to everyone for the lovely emails, we are sitting in an internet café/Juice Bar (Liz is having carrot, spinach, beet (!), celery and coriander, love it!) in San Francisco waiting to pick up our hire car and drive south to LA for Friday where we are catching a flight to Tahiti! Can’t believe we are leaving San Francisco already both think we should have had a few more days here, it is such an amazing city, here are some highlights.. Arrived on Monday after 10 hours on the plane from Heathrow, flew with Virgin which was great, lots of movies and TV and music and food to keep us entertained, even got some unexpected leg room as there were not seats in front of us, yay! When we arrived in SF ... read more

In San Francisco we stayed with Sunita's friend Meghan in a small town about 45 minutes out of the main city called Pleasonton. It is quite a rich area, apparently the houses are normally a million plus. Meghan had another friend over (Kendra) who was a pure bred Pleasonton and we hit a local bar which had a live band and a whole lot of merry oldies dancing. For those who usually read my oddities site, it looked as though a lot of them got their moves from the video "How to dance like a white boy". The next day we headed into the city via the bay bridge (which itself is much longer than the Golden Gate). We then hopped on a last minute ferry and cruised to Alcatraz (a historic small island prison 10 ... read more

Ok, so I am sitting on the floor at gate in SFO waiting for the United flight to take me home to SD. Please note, the above does not say business lounge. Why you ask? Well just when I thought that things couldn’t get worse, they did. I blame my sister actually. She sent me a very nice send off message and commented that after Bangalore the trip home will be a breeze…yea, Jane, it was real easy. Ok, so when I last left you I had not eaten in 14 hours, and I was waiting to board my plane in Frankfurt. Apparently, Jan 8th is Germany’s National Mushroom and Shrimp Holiday. My menu selections on the trip from Frankfurt to SFO consisted of a number of mushroom and shrimp dishes. The air hostess was very ... read more

After escaping the island of Kauai and its $45 nachos we were psyched to get to San Francisco and check out what it had to offer. None of our traveling party (Linda, Ben, Cookie and myself) had been to San Fran before so we were all keen to explore the place with fresh eyes. Our time there was taken up primarily with doing the "tourist thing" which proved to be relatively rewarding as far as those types of experiences go. On the first morning we got up and walked from our hostel in Union Square through China Town up to Coit Tower, across to Lombard Street and down to the Tourist trap of Fishermans' Wharf. I was very much struck with how appealing the architecture is in San Fran. All of the houses seem to have ... read more

The plane trip was uneventful and boring...and LONG. I don’t remember the exact amount of time we were held captive but I’m thinking it was about 10 hours to Frankfurt where we had a couple hours lay over and then another 12 hours to San Francisco. We had a bit of a hassle at Chennai when our reserved, TWICE confirmed seats, appeared to have been given to someone else and we were reassigned to three seats separated and spread out throughout the plane. Praveen was not happy, especially after confirming them twice before we went to the airport, and especially after a similar incident when we first started the trip in San Francisco. The nice lady behind the counter told us that there was nothing anyone could do and she had no idea why the seats ... read more

I arrived at San Francisco's Greyhound depot on the morning of 31st Dec 2005. The idea of counting down and celebrating New Year in a foreign country made me pretty excited. Also, after travelling around Western Canada/USA alone for 2 weeks, I finally had company in San Francisco. My father has a friend, Uncle Danny, who lived in San Francisco. Uncle Danny and my father worked together in Hong Kong 2 decades ago. After my family migrated to Singapore, Uncle Danny migrated to USA and settled down in San Francisco. I was very lucky to meet Uncle Danny in San Francisco because he's working as a hotel manager and he allowed me to stay in his hotel for 3 nights! Somemore, his hotel was very convenient. (It was right beside Chinatown and was within walking distance ... read more

Mon and I got married about 4 months ago. We didn't go on a honeymoon coz I was out of vacation days for 2005. So first thing in 2006, we go to San Francisco for the weekend. It was a nice change from the day-to-day of working (for me) and schooling (for her). Unfortunately, I was sick the first two days :-( This was a road trip for us. And I honestly don't mind the drive. I always pictured myself going on road trips with my wife. And we would stop to refuel at gas stations. Buy lots of chips and soda (or water for her). San Fran is nice. I really like going to this city. It's a nice change of scenery compared to So Cal. It gives me a chance to reflect and think ... read more

The past few days we have been at the Pt. Montara Lighthouse which a few miles south of San Francisco right off of Highway 1. The occasion was Lisa and Alex's wedding in addition to a concurrent New Year's eve party. There were about 50 people in attendance at the wedding with the majority staying at the hostel (the lighthouse is also a full-time hostel - not the actual lighthouse but the grounds). If anyone on the east coast has not heard, the weather has been rainy and stormy throughout our stay with mudslides and flooding but luckily not where we are staying - in general it's very humid and moist around here. Amazingly, yesterday afternoon the clouds disappeared and we saw some sun and blue skies; it stayed dry throught the ceremony, reception and remainder ... read more

Maybe the best part of my trip home was going to San Fran to hang out with my cousin, Jen. It was totally awesome! It's strange this year that I don't see her as much as I did last year. Going to school in Santa Cruz, we're only an hour away from each other so she'd come and visit me, a sort of escape from the city for a bit plus some fun with my loveable crazy friends. And SC is a bit more laidback than SF which makes a difference too. :) New Year's Eve we went down to the Embarcadero to watch the fireworks on the Bay. They were amazing and lasted for a really long time. A gazillion people had the same idea as well, which was pretty cool to see especially in ... read more

I am all packed and ready to go. I can't believe how fast the last month has gone by, not to mention the last year! But it has come to an end, and my little adventure is about to begin. I head up North for New Years tomorrow...then leave for Hawaii on Monday...then it's off to Bangkok on the 8th. Things have come together quickly, and I am still amazed and grateful every day that everything has worked out. The rough itinerary is going to be something like this... 5 days in Bangkok to get visas, etc A week in Ko Tao to get scuba certified A couple weeks in Northern Thailand Boat out of Thailand via the Mekong River into Laos around Feb 8th-9th Spend 3 weeks in Northern Laos (the last untouched SE Asian ... read more
